DS is 21 months old and hes not making any effort to talk. He says mama and dada but thats it. He is learning two languages so I know he will be delayed, but how delayed is to long before I need to start looking for help. Advice please!!!!
When my daughter was 18 mo she had 8 words and qualified for speech services. Now at2.5 she's all caught up. I would definitely make an appt with EI for an evaluation.
I have heard of anecdotal cases in which children learning two languages have a "silent period" past the point of parental comfort, and then - BAM - there's a word explosion. That said, it couldn't hurt to get him evaluated, at the very least for peace of mind.
I agree that I'd call EI. DD had 2 words at 21 months (mama, dada) and she started speech therapy at 17 months. She has since been diagnosed with a speech disorder.
Does he use signs at all? Does he imitate you? These are important on top of number of words but if you don't believe he is making an effort to communicate verbally I'd be concerned.
DS is in speech because we were concerned that he was a VERY quiet baby. No babbling, etc. We since learned he was using his diaphragm incorrectly, and once he corrected that, his speech improved. I'm SO thankful for early intervention. It definitely can't hurt. Every kid is different, but I would be concerned about only mama and dada at 21 mo.
So my app was broken so I havent been able to respond. Sorry ladies. But no we never got into signing. I figured two tanguages was enough. He does point and babble and he listens very well, he understands so much but doesnt use words to respond back. He is very vocal and he communicates, but he is not verbal. The only reason im concerned is because DH has asbergers and his brother has severe PDD.
We are in a similar situation at 16 months, and in speech therapy through our private insurance. DD points, makes eye contact and understands. She babbles, but has no words that mean anything. She can say mama, but it is not associated with me. She was evaluated to be 19.5 months for receptive language and only 8 months for expressive. Your pedi can give you a referral, or you can call EI. For us, it is easier to go through our private insurance.

Any update? Curious to know how it's going. At 16 months my son isn't saying words. He babbles, points, likes when I read, copies my actions and understands some things. If I say let's take a bath he grabs his tub... But no words. I'm hoping he says something by his 18 month appt. wishing you all the best!
DS is almost 19 months and says ONE word. Car. No mama or dada. He appears to be sharp/clever and definitely understands and will carry out commands, but is not making much effort to talk. He started babbling at the right time, but was pretty late to clap and late to point. We are a bilingual home, and he was in the NICU for his first month. We have kept in touch with the NICU speech pathologist he did not seem overly concerned and felt he was borderline at worst, last time we checked in. She felt it is never a bad idea for the EI. Our pediatrician thought it is too early to be overly concerned, thinks he is just a late bloomer, and we should wait until 21 months for our EI.
He is also late/difficult in feeding. He is slow to adopt big boy foods and to self feed. Pretty sure he has a slight oral aversion, as he is physiologically fine. Regardless, I am probably going to wait only 1 more month and then get moving on the EI.
We are bringing him to EI in a few days. He will be 22 months by then. I not overly concerned yet, I am waiting to see what they say at his evaluation, I will def update once that is done. Thank you all for your well wishes
