I really want to bring her home in something special. I don't knit myself but I know MIL would be honored to make such a special outfit. But my question is do you think it's too much outfit for DD to come home in?
That is so adorable! I would definitely ask her about making it and use it for newborn photos. I brought both my kids home in footed sleepers (one was a February baby and one was an August baby, but we were not outsidep for more than a minute with either onevbb) they pretty much lived in those for the first month or two. It was so nerve wracking trying to dress those floppy babies for the first time anyway, and then stressful trying to get them into the carseat the first time, that I didn't want to complicate the process.
I'd keep the coming home outfit simple, and use that knit outfit for newborn pics. It is super cute but looks like it could be a hassle for that half-dazed state you'll most likely be in leaving the hospital.
DH wants to bring her home in a dress. I pick up a simple 1 layer dress by Carter's and I turn around and he is holding monstrosities that look like they belong in a pageant, that there is no way it would fit in the car seat. Maybe I'll talk to him again about being simple. This is our last child and the only girl in 5 generations, his whole side of the family is going nuts.

Maybe have him pick something out for pictures? And if you expect cold weather (I'm not sure where you are located), you are going to want to dress the newborn in layers. A dress would involve tights, leggings or pants.
Also, remind him that newborn skin is very sensitive. Anything with ribbons, lace, or frilly layers could cause irritation.
A super soft sleeper would probably be better. If he wants to splurge on one outfit, maybe take him to Gap. They makes super soft sleepers that are ultra cute. Or even a cute little pants outfit with a sweater.
It's hard to tell in the pic just how voluminous the outfit is. If it's a simple knit dress w/ little pants, I don't see a problem with it. I brought DD#3 home in this. It wasn't hand made but totally weather appropriate and adorable.
I don't get the fancy coming home outfit. Sure, for a party, special occasion, pictures, etc go all out with an outfit but when we brought our daughter home, we literally walked to the car, put her in, went home, and no one even saw her the rest of the day except us. She wore a white onesie and some pants with feet attached. This next baby we'll probably either do that or a footed sleeper since it'll be colder. Dresses are IMO completely pointless until they can walk unless it's for a special event (baptism, etc). They just ride up and hinder their movement, and unless it's really warm you have to put pants or leggings or tights on anyway, and that's a pain. I'm a fan of practical - one piece sleepers, rompers, and onesies up til walking age, then stretchy pants and shirts. I want my kids to be comfortable, not art pieces to show off.
Well the dress that I picked had knitted pants to go along with it. The point to the fancy coming home outfit is we framed our sons with hospital hat and bracelets and other little what nots. I would like to do the same for DD. DS literally got home needed a diaper change and we changed him right out of the outfit and into a sleeper gown. I will have her in a cute outfit I may just have to keep looking.
Re: NCDR Baby homecoming outfit
Both of my kids were winter babies, so they were layered up.
But yeah, I'd still go with a cotton sleeper.
