You are not only affecting yourself ever. There are people who can't get vaccinated because they are immunocompromised or have an allergy, and healthy people who avoid getting vaccinated are putting them at risk. Those people depend on herd immunity which in turn depends on healthy people getting vaccinated.

Its okay @Alyssa7012, we can sit together in the anti-cobbler zone.
Important question. If you don't like cobbler, do you like pie? Because is cobbler not just a mashed up, confused, post-modern pie?
Pie- rolled crust top and bottom
Cobbler- top only covers most of it but more crusty
Crisp- like a cobbler but more sugar in the crust and again top only.. may be more broken up instead of rolled nice
Crumble- top only involves granola too, not rolled just crumbled over the top
On flu jabs- FFS unless you have a valid reason not to get you immunizations get them... We fricken not only had flu but measles and mumps go through school putting the pregnant teachers at significant risk last year because despite it being a FREE healthcare system people are idiots/irresponsible parents. We started giving our secondary kids the nose one in school and the girls get their HPV in school as well.
My UO- I don't like dessert... so when out with people that order it I just rock another glass of red wine or an irish coffee

OMG, I'm still reading through the thread, but this. A thousand times this!!!
Agreed. It is entirely the responsbile decision to make. More generally though, I think the OP tone of saying anyone who doesn't get a shot, without a medical reason, is an idiot is what made things go pear shaped. There was a whole thread on flu shots a few weeks ago, and what became clear to me is that everyone has their own situation and generalizations help no one. I shared that, while I got a flu shot this year because off TTGP, I have been reticent in the past because I've twice landed in the hospital because of bad reactions to vaccines.
Bottom line: flu shots are important, education about why to get them is even MORE important, but don't assume that everyones health situtation allows for it. Just be reasonable.

Ever single proponent of vaccines in this thread has said there are legitimate medical reasons not get a shot. If you've had a bad reaction and been in the hospital, I would consider that a legitimate medical reason to talk your doctor and decide if the risks outweigh the benefits. "I don't want to" is not a legitimate medical reason.

OP here! To me, you have a medical reason for not getting vaccinations if they've landed you in the hospital. As someone who is immunocompromised, this situation is near and dear to my heart, and I absolutely understand that some people simply can't get the vaccine.
But if someone says they're not getting the flu shot "just because", well, I make no apologies about thinking they're an idiot.
Also, because it's quiet, if you don't get a flu shot and you don't have a medical reason to abstain, you're an idiot.
If you don't get a flu shot but you're stressed about ebola, you're an idiot who doesn't understand statistics.
I never, ever get the flu shot. I passed my nursing boards so I'm pretty sure that disqualifies me from being an idiot. So thanks for that.
First, as a nurse I know plenty of other nurses who are idiots. So passing the NCLEX doesn't guarantee you aren't one.
Second, congratulations of being completely irresponsible! You refusing to get a flu vaccine puts your patients, a vulnerable population, at risk. A nurse not getting the flu vaccine is completely irresponsible and idiotic.
I hate high heels, broccoli, and people who cut their fingernails anywhere other than in their own bathroom, behind a closed door.
I was in the airport a few months ago - had a really short layover. We grabbed a burger and sat down at the gate to eat, and a random man sat down next to my wife and started cutting his nails. With nail clippers. Next to our food.

Good God people suck at comprehension today. A reaction is a legit reason to not get one. You should be pushing others to get it to protect you.
Point=missed. I was simply providing an example of why someone (me) would not always be able to get a flu shot. I am in agreement with pp on that point. My comprehension is just fine thanks.
"She had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous"
Thanks for proving that being a nurse does not make one an expert in virology.
Never said I was an expert. But if someone high risk gets the flu shot, and comes into contact with someone who has the one of the strains covered in the shot, then the vaccinated person is less likely to get sick.
This is basic stuff.
And the flu shot does NOT cover all strains of the flu. So just because you get the shot doesn't guarantee you're good for the season.
Arguing that because the flu vaccine doesn't cover all strains you shouldn't bother with it is ridiculous. Wearing a seatbelt won't protect you in every accident, but you still wear it because it greatly decreases you risk of getting hurt.

FWIW, I hate it when people clip their nails here at work.
At work??? Seriously???
I don't work with @slappiness, so that makes at least 2 workplaces where this is a thing. In my case it's always the same woman. I can hear the clippers and it makes me cringe. Once this summer she took advantage of flip-flop weather and did her toes. It baffles me to no end.
"She had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous"
Regarding the clipping your nails at work bit: I am guilty of this once. I don't mean I had nothing better to do, so I sat down with my clippers and followed it up with my file and then painted them.
I had a really nasty break on a nail - like, I could have broken the skin even on accident - and I carry a clipper in my purse.

I was on a plane last week, and the woman across the aisle started clipping her nails.
WHO DOES THAT?!?!
Since when are nail clippers allowed on planes?

I cut my fingernails at church a few weeks ago... I play the violin and have to keep my nails really short in order to play. My nails have been growing really fast lately (maybe it's the PNVs?), so they snuck up on me and I didn't realize it until I was unpacking my violin. Thank goodness I've kept a pair of nail clippers in my case for 10+ years.

Dammit, cy. Dammit.
Whaaaat, it was either that or go around bleeding all over the place! Tell me which is worse :P
Oh, and I worked in a cubicle environment so it was sort of behind walls?? Anyway, I carefully clipped so it didn't go flying and placed it in the waste basket. I'm a responsible clipper.

For some reason I was thinking nurses were legally required to get a flu shot unless they had a valid medical reason not to? Maybe that is just here. I feel like this is a thing.
I imagine this would be a workplace policy, rather than a law (ie. making it legally required).
I'd be pretty shocked if there was a law requiring people to get any kind of shot. That seems a little Orwellian.
"She had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous"
Maybe this belongs in FFFC, but I really did not know all this information about the flu shot. My thought process was never got a flu shot, never had the flu, I'm good...
I'm going to go into CVS and get one this weekend - thanks for the info!
I prefer potato chips to any type of desert; pie, cobbler, crisp, or otherwise...even chocolate.

I'm honestly not a huge fan of superhero movies in general, with the exception of the old Batman movies from the 90's (Batman Returns (?) with the Penguin in particular) and X-Men.
But I need to know....why not get it any other year? Because aside from being lazy, allergic or other wise reactive to vaccines, living in a country where they are not readily available or being completely ill informed as to the benefits of vaccinations to yourself and the greater community I can't come up with a good reason for an otherwise healthy person to avoid it.
My body, my choice. No other explanation really needed.
I think the "anti-vaccine" movement is crazy and ridiculous, I am not against all vaccines. Just putting that out there since I guess my aversion to one particular vaccine has caused confusion for some people.

Not a big fan of Rose bouquets.
I went to a lot of funerals when I was young. I think I associate roses with death.
This is why I don't like lilies. Especially the really strongly scented ones. They remind me of my mom's funeral.

It was a part of the work contract at the hospital I was employed at that you had to have your flu vaccination, Hep B series, and TB screening. ------------------------------------- I managed community health clinics and we required anyone who had contact with patients to be screened for TB, get the hep B vaccination and an annual flu shot. It is your body/your choice and I respect that, but as a health professional who works in PUBLIC health, shots are mandatory, not optional. We worked with high volumes of patients from vulnerable groups though - lower income, HIV positive...etc.
