Questions from a newbie after an ultrasound surprise

Hi ladies!

First, I apologize in advance- some of my questions are probably things you are tired of answering. I did look through the FAQs, but a lot of them are old polls that are now disabled. I feel overwhelmed and know people on TB tend to be quite knowledgeable, so I hope you're willing to help this newbie :)

I got pregnant via IUI, so I have early monitoring. had an ultrasound at 5 weeks and everything looked normal. Today I had another one- I was told I'm "six weeks"; going by the IUI date I think I'm either 5 weeks, 6 days or 6 weeks, 0 days. My doctor said: "well, last week I was talking about one, now I'm talking about two." Whoa! Twins! I am mostly excited but also terrified! Here are some questions:

1) I am concerned because he could not see either heartbeat yet. My doctor told me at this stage that's normal, but I'm worried. I was told by the nurse before I went in, "this is probably your last visit with us!" so I was really expecting it to be heartbeat time. When did you ladies who had early monitoring hear the heartbeats?

2) One twin (the one he didn't see at all last time) is measuring "a few days behind" the other. I realize it could have been due to later implantation, but does this put me at higher risk for vanishing twin? Anyone have experience with one being a bit smaller?

I admit, multiples were my biggest fear, particularly with injects + IUI. Now that I have both of them, though, I don't want to lose one.

Thank you!

Re: Questions from a newbie after an ultrasound surprise

  • No experience w HBs that early, but I think sometime between 6-7w is pretty common to first see a HB.

One twin measured a few days behind in the beginning and they continued to grow at their own pace. They ended up 1/2 lb different at birth.

    Congrats!

  • Congratulations! I know nothing about the HB, since I didn't find out until 20 weeks that I was having twins, but I wish you all the best, and my rule of thumb is, if the doc's not worried, you shouldn't be either :) I know easier said than done, so hang in there!

  • Congrats! I went in at 6w2d I think and saw heartbeats, but the RE said they just started beating & warned beforehand that we may not see them yet bc its so early. Mine measured a day apart.. last week they were 3 days apart. When they are that small, its really hard to know exactly what they are measuring bc it all depends on exactly where they click (sorry I don't know the medical terms lol). There can be slight error.

  • My first ultrasound was at 5w6d. We could only see sacs. I went in again at 7w1d and we were able to see the yolks and heartbeats. Its possible its too early. I know how hard it is to try to keep positive when you don't get to see/hear the heartbeats at first, but try to stay calm!

My babies have never measured the same. When I was about ten weeks baby a measured about three days ahead of baby b. They are still that way now at 24w. Baby a is measuring four days ahead of baby b, but baby b is measuring right on track! This is totally normal with multiples.

  • I don't think we saw our babies heartbeats until 7 weeks (had our first ultrasound at 6 weeks) and they almost always measured a few days apart.

    No worries!
