Clicky Poll - Does your baby use utensils? 121 votes

Totally depends on me or someone else to feed them. They won't pick up anything or use utensils.

They can pick up foods with their fingers, but things like yogurt, soup, etc., I have to feed them.

No, Grace. I will not feed you grapes. Get off that chaise lounge and stop being such a weirdo.

  • I rarely offer utensils because they seem to decrease the chance of food getting into her mouth

  • She refuses to use her hands to eat anymore. Excellent (for this age) with a spoon, as long as it's thick enough. She doesn't quite understand how to keep it level as she brings it to her mouth. But with yogurt or a thick soup she finishes the bowl. Fork is hit or miss, and it might have more to do with what's on the plate than her abilities. Some things are just easier to stab than others. She is obsessed with dipping right now. Everything goes on her fork, then gets dipped into whatever dip she's been given (because she won't eat a bite without dip). It's usually hummus or tzatziki, but the girl is also obsessed with ketchup

  • We're in between some use and pro use.  For thicker things like oatmeal/risotto, LO can do it himself.  I might help him get the last bit out of the bowl, or if I'm in a hurry.  Lentil soup which was thinner was a huge mess, but he had a lot of fun managing most of it himself.

Fork use is also pretty good, but he does eventually just use his fingers.

Daycare has been having him at least hold utensils practically the whole time he's been on solids, so I think that's helped a lot.

  • She's a pro at using a fork. She hates her baby forks and stares me down until I give her my fork.

He can use a fork well if it's something easy to stab but generally feels his hands are quicker. Still, he likes to have a fork while he eats so he can be like us. He can get some food up with the spoon too but gets frustrated with that more quickly than fork.
