Another MSPI question - daiya?

Has anyone used daiya stuff? Most of their products are dairy, soy, and gluten free. But for some reason, the "pizza" says lactose free, not dairy free. But I'm not seeing any dairy in it, nor is there a milk warning. Anyone tried it?

Re: Another MSPI question - daiya?

  • I almost ordered a pizza from a local place that uses daiya. It's vegan, so completely free of animal products. You're good to go.

  • I've only had the "cheese" which is safe. Just check the ingredients on the pizza to be sure. I've noticed a lot of dairy free things also specifically say lactose free. My almond milk says that on top, then dairy free on the back. Odd.

  • I did try some of the milk free cheeses.....forget which ones though.....I decided that I preferred no cheese to "artificial" cheese. My personal preference. It's like the one saying "You can't make an apple pie with cherries and expect it to taste like apple pie."

  • It is a totally different texture. I also prefer the no cheese. I've had it because my sister is vegan and likes it, but it's weird and rubbery and has a strange flavor, imo. Give it a go though, a lot of people like it.

  • I love the slices on burgers. Just bought some frozen pizzas last week and they are ok. I miss real cheese.
  • I'm vegan and also prefer no cheese pizza to fake cheese. Although daiya is the best cheese replacement I've had. It's not bad for quesadillas and grilled cheese. The only cheese substitute I actually LOVE is called Punk Rawk cheese. It's pricey but so good! It's a spreadable 'cheese'. Made of nuts and no funky stuff. Not good for pizza but rather I eat it on crackers.
  • Thanks MK. With E I just did without. But after 3 years of this MSPI drama, I am ready for some alternatives. I miss food. What types of recipes did you use it in?

We're nut free too @jezika125 so that cheese would be a no go. Thanks though.

  • A friend just posted a recipe for Moxerella "cheese" on FB. She decided to make it because Daiya is so expensive. She said it was better than the store bought stuff and the pictures she posted made me want to try it. The recipe for the cheese is towards the bottom of this recipe. It might be worth a shot as long as there are no nut allergies. https://vedgedout.com/2013/03/11/individual-vegan-margherita-pizzas-with-homemade-fresh-moxarella-cheese/

  • I found Daiya pretty good in grilled cheese, quesadillas and also to melt into a mac and "cheese" sauce with non dairy milk.  It's better in places where it's not the star of the recipe, but just adding some melty goodness. Used sparingly, it's pretty good on homemade pizza, but definitely don't load it on like you would with regular mozzarella.  When I do a dairy free pizza, I make the toppings the star, not the fake cheese.
  • Also, if you like boxed mac and cheese, a really good dairy free sub for the sauce is 1/4 cup non dairy milk, 1/4 cup melted margarine, a few tablespoons of nutritional yeast (approximately how much powder you would find in a powdered cheese envelope) and then a tiny squirt of yellow mustard and a little garlic powder.  I'm telling you it's yummy.  Not exactly the same, but yummy and quick.

  • Yeah, MK, if a restaurant uses margarine, chances are it has dairy in it.  I found that most margarines do.  I only used margarine at home when I knew what ingredients were in it.
  • @theultimatesak Sir Kensington's is egg free.  And dairy and soy and nut free.

  • Some margarine is dairy free but most had dairy that we've found. I do like the dairy and soy free earth balance though.

Not a dairy question, but is there mayo sub that doesn't have egg in it?

there is vegenaise. I'm not sure about nuts and soy but its dairy and egg free. I might have some in my fridge I can check. They have lots of fancy flavors

  • So does regular Kraft mayo have dairy in it? Bc I have read that label a dozen times and can't find it.

  • I don't think so Jane, but it's full of soy.

True story, E's first day care thought that eggs were dairy.  For a full year, they didn't feed E any eggs.  They called me in a panic one day because she snatched an egg off another kid's plate and ate it.  I guess I would rather them be uneducated and overprotective than uneducated and underprotective.
