Did everyone get vaccinated?

edited September 2014 in November 2014 Moms
I know this topic has been discussed, but I haven't yet gotten the Tdap vaccine yet, and honestly getting it while pregnant freaks me out a little. Seeing the results in poll form will make me feel better, I think. :)

So, have you (or will you) be getting the Tdap vaccine while pregnant?

I voted no. I am getting them after baby is born. (My Tdap is still current, but I figure a booster can't hurt.)

I know getting them while pregnant is supposed to pass some immunity to the baby, but I just can't feel comfortable with it. I miscarried last year after getting the flu shot, and while logically I know the shot probably had nothing to do with it, I can't get over the thought. Hopefully breastfeeding will pass some immunity to the baby.

  •  No, not getting it. In all my other full-term pregnancies, you were NOT supposed to get it while pregnant. Now, magically it's all ok and super! Yeah, ok, I'm current anyways.
  • Yup, I got both at my last appointment.  It's pretty standard practice at my OB's office.  I was so glad to get them both done, because I knew I was going to get them, and hate shots, so every time I had an appointment, I'd psych myself out a little for them.  Ironic since I give shots all the time at work.

  • I'm getting tdap and flu shots post-delivery. I decided against getting them while pregnant because of the medical information about the tdap vaccines (available on the FDA website). It says they are not proven safe for use in pregnant women. Recommendations be damned. That was enough for me to say no. I am not an anti-vaxer and will be getting the shots once the baby is born.

  • No to both. My TDAP is current (thankfully, as the woman who sits in the cubicle behind me at work was just diagnosed with pertussis). I will have the flu shot after the baby is born.

  • I got my tdap and will get the flu shot within the next week. I thought that getting the tdap post partum wasn't as effective in passing antibodies to the baby?
  • My midwife recommended against it. She says the flu shot contains mercury... I haven't looked into it. I don't normally get them anyway.

Yep got both. I'm hugely pro-vax and md recommended I get both between 30-32 weeks
  • I'm special ;) In Canada, we don't often so the TDAP whilst pregnant, so that will be right after. Yes, however, to the flu shot. This is all in-line with my OBs recommendation.
  • Got my flu shot today. I miscarried in jan after i got it too and i have the same thoughts but i got it. I was only like 8 weeks last time so i figure its ok. Ill get the tdap next appointment probably. I can talk to them more in two weeks. I also work in a daycare so thats another reason to get it.

Yes to tdap, no to flu (yet). Undecided on flu. The one time I got a flu shot I got the flu. To be fair, it was when "swine flu" was a thing in the news but they never specifically identified me as a swiner. So who knows which flu I really had.

Ps. For immediate peace of mind, would be interesting to poll August 14 and see how many got the shot and had perfectly healthy babies. Not exactly good scientific method, but may be up to Internet standards.

  • It's not straight mercury in vaccines, it's a compound. I hate when people use that argument. I wouldn't drink a spoonful of chlorine but I feel perfectly safe using salt... (which is sodium chloride)

As someone who studied chemistry it just really frustrates me.

Haha apparently same thought different way of stating it... Just took me a little longer to type on iPad!

There are many types of flu but the vaccine only protects against against 3 of them (4 if you get the quadrivalent). Good chance that you got a type of flu not covered by the vaccine, unfort.

I got both! My flu shot was yesterday, my arm still hurts :(

Okay so this is slightly off topic but I have to share it and since we are talking vaccines... There was a woman I know who posted a pro-vaccine (for children) article to her Facebook page. Another lady commented on it and said, I quote: "The people who get theses diseases are malnourished. We should be spending our energy on eating what God made for us and not what man made."
I just sat there like, what? And then the convo goes on, she insists that they put aborted babies in vaccines and various other things despite being thwarted down by knowledgable and well researched responses. Ack!

    Edit: because of wrong emoji
  • Last time my doctor wouldn't let me get it till after. This time my doctor was telling me it is now required while pregnant

Except anyone who did miscarry likely wouldn't be on the group anymore. I was supposed to be June 2014, never went back to that BMB after I got the bad news.

This seems to be the newest anti-vaxxer argument--that only malnourished people have complications from diseases that vaccines prevent. It makes just as much sense as the "thimerosal is the same as elemental mercury" argument.

  • I am up to date with the TDAP. As far as the flu shot, I never get it and I haven't had the flu since I was a child. So I just didn't want to mess with it.

  • Thanks for all the replies! It's not making it easier for me though. I am too afraid of getting a vaccine while pregnant. When I was pregnant with my son they didn't reccomend it. I'll have to have another talk with my doctor tomorrow at my appointment.

Nope to the Tdap, in Canada it is not given in pregnancy and I cannot get it after as I had the tetnus on its own just a while ago and having another dose so close is not recommended. I will be getting the flu shot though. Ps the mercury excuse is like saying I cannot eat salt (NaCl) because it has sodium in it and it explodes when in contact with water... Elements are not the same as compounds it's a scare tactic from the anti vaccine movement.

Same here.  Immunizations are up to date.

I actually had pertussis as a child (despite being vaccinated) and I remember the coughing.  Not being able to draw breath between body wracking coughs and not understanding why none of the big people seemed to be able to do anything to help.

  • I never get a flu shot either but I'm not risking it while pregnant. The flu can easily kill you if you get it while pregnant... I'm not taking that risk. I might never get it again, getting it once isn't the end of the world.

Good point. I just did some light Googling and I guess I should go ahead and get the shot. I'm surprised my doctor didn't act like it was a big deal.

  • I'm in Canada.  I got the whooping cough vaccine in my 3rd trimester when I was pregnant with DS in 2012 as per my doctors orders.  I also made my in-laws and family get the shot.  This time they said I'm fine because it is good for 5 years.

  • I voted no. If I remember correctly,  I got the shot after I delivered my baby last year so I'll do the same this time around.

  • I got my tdap vaccine done today. I actually had pertussis 5 years ago when I was pregnant with DS1 but the GP said to go ahead and get the vaccine because even though I would now have immunity my baby wouldn't be protected. She said you have to get the vaccine with every pregnancy. I would say about half the pregnant mothers here in Ireland are getting vaccinated.
  • I got the TDap a few weeks ago. Haven't had the flu shot yet but plan to get it. They usually bring people to give the shot into work, so I'll do it there or at my OB...whichever gets it first. (The OB told me yesterday they are having trouble with their supplier.)

Got my TDaP in March of 2013 when pregnant with DS. Just got it again as I want to share the benefits with DD (even though I didn't need the booster, she needs it!)

I'm a teacher - I get the flu shot every year. Will be going in the next few weeks to get it (as soon as my OB has it in the office)

ETA - I'm a dork. Words (and numbers, apparently, are difficult). March 2013, NOT 2023.

  • I had my flu shot this past Monday and next Monday at my check up I'll be getting the tDap
  • I got it and the doc gave it to my husband at well. My docs suggested getting it at least six weeks before the baby is born so that I have time to build up the immunity. I'd say just talk to your docs to get more information and then see how you feel.

Re: thimerosal, it seems to be far less common in vaccines these days, and I agree that it's not the same as Hg mercury. That said, my siblings and I literally played with mercury as very small children, pushing it around to see how it clumped together and dipping pennies in it. Yes, I know, it was after birth, we wouldn't do that today, and we certainly didn't ingest it, but the fact that we all turned out okay makes me less concerned about any trace amount of mercury, even if it were "real" mercury.

  • I got both, but had a bad reaction to the flu shot. I ended up being okay, but experienced lots of pain in my arm, wrist and hand for several days following the shot and a fever the night of and the day after my flu shot. I haven't ever had any side effects from the flu shot before this, but it won't deter me from getting them again. Midwife said our bodies can react a lot differently to them when pregnant.

I work as a contractor and both my company and on-site location offer flu shots, however the people they bring in don't give them to pregnant women.  So best get it at your OB!  :)  Just FYI!
