Pacifier Study

The headline is "Pacifiers may get in the way of parents bonding with babies."  This doesn't seem like the best-designed or most comprehensive study, but the title caught my eye in today's Wall Street Journal.  I'm a pacifier fan, but it made me think.

Re: Pacifier Study

  • I'm a pro pacifier all the way. It's the only way we could get LO to calm down and sleep. I guess if you let your baby have it all the time then MAYBE I'd see the concern. But I've seen plenty of binky babies turn out to be well adjusted adults. So even if LO used a binky all day, I would read this and think...."hmm interesting" and that's about it. Especially a study where only pictures of babies were used rather than moms interacting face to face with their babies.
  • Loading the player...
  • Welp, I'm screwed then.
  • I still sawmy children's little smile or pout behind a pacifier. 5 of mine have turned out perfect...number 6 is doing great as well. It's an interesting article just the same
  • I fought tooth and nail to get DD2 to take a paci because I know how much easier it makes everyone's life. There are times when babies need to be soothed and mommy's boobies are not available (like the car!)

    DD2 - Charlotte Avery - 1/27/14

  • I wonder if LO's lack of pacifier use is correlated to his RBF....

  • Everything will ruin our babies somehow.

    That's how it seems lately.

I also find it a bit ridiculous the study says "specifically boys".

Seriously moms, do what feels right and works for you and your family and keeps everyone happy.

  • Not believing this study, but I will bring it up when MIL asks me for the 800th time why we didn't use a pacifier and are we sure we don't want to introduce one now????

(I have no problems with them, but from day 1 LO was a thumb sucker so we just never introduced it.  I figured either way there'd be a habit to break later. Plus I'm a mess and would never be able to find it when needed..)

Same here!  We did "pacifier boot camp" where I really focused on getting him to use it for like a week.  It was a lifesaver many times!
