Oh names...

My husband and I fell in love with the name Elsie. It is an old family name and I had no negative thoughts about the name and had never heard of the cow and neither had he when we first decided on it. After telling a few people what we liked (prior to being pregnant) they would say oh no, that's a cows name. I had never ever even thought that. My husband says not to let what people say sway us from this name, but I need some more encouragement. I do not feel children my child grows up with will know about the cow, but their parents might and say something to their kids and then my child gets made fun of. That's the last thing I want.

Re: Oh names...

  • I think that's a pretty outdated reference, although I just googled it and Borden relaunched the name as part of a 2012 campaign, so there's that.  It doesn't bother me, though.  My friend named her son Chandler (a family name) and a few people said, "Oh, like Chandler from Friends!", which annoyed the hell out of my friend.  But his generation (he's 8) has no idea who Chandler form Friends is.  I doubt kids will have much to say about Elsie.

  • I think Elise is a beautiful name!! I doubt parents would say anything. You should definitely go with that.

I love the name. Additionally, I don't think of cows. I think of this song from Cabaret.

  • My 3 year old niece is an Elsie, and I adore the name!! Her parents get lots of compliments on her name, too. People will have associations with any name you pick, so just pick something you love !
  • My best friend has a 7 month old baby girl named Elsie and I don't think they've gotten anything but compliments on her name. She's adorable and it's a lovely name that suits her now as a baby and will grow with her as well.

  • I did not think 'cow' when I first read the name at all. I thought of this sweet old lady I used to know! With that said, I like the old names that are making a great comeback.

You might do a poll on the baby name board, those ladies have great opinions!!

  • I think Elsie is a lovely name. If you love it, don't let other people's stupid comments ruin it for you.
  • I didn't associate the name with the cow either. I wouldn't worry about it. It's a pretty name.

My friend at work has a 17 year old son named Chandler. :)

  • I didn't even think "cow" until you mentioned yourself in the post LOL I think that association would be few and far between, and as someone already mentioned, people have associations with every name so if you love it you should use it. I think it's a lovely name!

  • I think the people criticizing your name are rude! It's a beautiful name! The only people who will think of the advertisement they're talking about are the people of te right age and demographic for the add. A very small portion of people and I don't care who you are when someone introduces them selves as Elsie no one has the first thought of cow. Their first thought is "Nice to meet you." I think you should stick with Elsie it's lovely!
  • I love Elsie! It's sweet and doesn't make me think of cows. Claribel or Bessie would be cow names, but Elsie is just adorable.
  • I like Elsie.  It's a family name on my mom's side (NN for Ersilia).  My mom's MN at birth was Elsie and she didn't like it, so when she reverted to her maiden name after divorcing my dad (while they were married her maiden name was her MN), she changed her MN to honor another family member.  I have never associated it with the cow and I doubt our kids' generation will either.

  • My initials (pre marriage) used to be LC. I was called LC all through high school and college. I would get introduced a lot as LC and people would always say I had such a pretty name, assuming my name was Elsie. SO I say go for it!

I love the name Elsie and did not associate it with the cow until you said it. Its not like it is an evil mass murdering cow so keep the name. Once baby is born they will forget all about the dumb cow.

We are having a similar annoyance with FIL. We Picked Elizabeth and plan on calling her Ellie and he keeps saying people will think she is a hillbilly named after Ellie May Clampett.

Clearly people are idiots. Your name is beautiful!
  • I like Elsie! I know it's hard not to let people's comments sway you from the name but dint let that stop you. I don't even know of this cow.
  • If it's any encouragement, I love the name Elsie and I have not the slightest idea who on earth Elsie the cow is.

  • Never heard of Elsie the cow.. And it seems like a lot of other moms (to be) here don't immediately associate the 2. I wouldn't let something silly like that stop you from going with a name you love. We really don't share baby names with people. They always think names are up for debate. But no one ever suggests a different name after the baby is born. So that's when everyone will find out our baby name.

  • I love the name! I think it's beautiful and feminine.

My thought when it comes to names is to just say 'we've picked and we will introduce you when she is born' and keep the name a secret. Let people keep their rudeness to themselves.
  • Elsie is a family name for us, too, and it's definitely on my list of possibilities.  I am trying to avoid a super popular name and I wondered if Elsa would become big because of Frozen.

  • I think it's beautiful! My 19 year old niece's name Elise! She's beautiful just like the name!
  • I think that Elsie is an absolutely beautiful name and you have just confirmed why I am not telling people the names that we are considering for our little boy to come.

I never understand why people think it is their place to give a negative opinion when you have decided to share something important to you. What about being kind and supportive?

  • I love Elsie!  I did not even think of cow.  I say go with what you want!

  • Thank you for all the positivity! Yes I agree @wonknessmonster‌ it's driving me crazy that some people are saying Elise not Elsie! However, overall the thoughts have been positive and I am going with my original gut feeling. My husband has never even swayed from his thoughts! I need to be more like him and go with it! Thank you all again.

Ps. My name is Lena and so I am really big on older names that are not real common. My name was found because it was my grandpa's aunts name, and Elsie is my grandma's aunts name that helped raise her. It is so sweet when she talks about Aunt Elsie.
  • No matter what name you pick, someone will ALWAYS have a comment. It can be frustrating, but remember that everyone has their own opinions. Surely you have opinions about names others choose.... that said, it's not always appropriate to share them ;) Sorry you had people bashing your name choice!
