My 2nd cousin gave me a pamphlet. Apparently oils cure/fix/treat just about anything according to them. Headaches, colds, fever, teething, insomnia.... Not things you would go to the dr for.
I don't know much about them, but one thing that was pointed out in a BF group I follow, is that even though they are natural, you still have to be careful with them. Many aren't advised for children and you should be careful with the amount used. If I find the article, I will post it.
I remember a friend of mine getting really into Chinese Medecine (using tisanes and teas and things) for "curing" diseases. She was always telling me that the natural way was better for you.
Natural =/= safe. There are a lot of natural things that can make you sick or kill you.... and a lot of things that can seriously harm you if you overdose them. That's why medications come in standard potencies and have guidelines for how much you use for your body mass.
I'm into some natural treatments like amber necklaces, and the "dosed" camilia I used for teething (and even that came with a "do not use more than X in 24 hours").... but I'm not entirely convinced about the efficacy of rubbing essential oils on yourself.
Also there are many that aren't safe for pregnancy. I'm skeptical. Ive researched and used samples of many. I can say that peppermint did take my headache away. As far as them curing major diseases/chronic illnesses, I'm not sure.
I have rosacea. It got really bad with all the hormones or something. The dermatologist said she wants me to be done with nursing before I can take medicine for it. Since it was medium to severe, she was going to put me on oral antibiotics for 6 months plus topical antibiotics. That did not sit well with me. I did research and started using lavender oil. While it probably would have worked a lot quicker with antibiotics, my face is almost rid of the stuff after probably 5 months of regular use. Plus, I still nurse and I haven't killed off the good bacterial with all the antibiotics. It's important to stay informed and do your own research.
I don't think oils should replace all medicines, but some of them do help. I also think they are quite potent and should be researched. Kind of like herbs, a lot of people think they are safe since they are natural but there is very little regulation.
I believe there are many ways to relieve most common ailments. If you find something that works and works SAFELY, more power to you.
If neither the ailment or the cure is dangerous then eh. People at work we're talking about homeopathic medicine (WHY DOES EVERYONE SAY IT WORKS FOR THEM uh placebo effect maybe) for kids colds. Real drugs do take a toll on your organs esp if your kid just started school and is sick constantly. So if a placebo helps and it's actually safe... Whatever
There's a company just starting trying to get a placebo for kids on the market. Basically of your kid won't stop whining and you think they're really fine... Bottle of colored medicine liquid stuff that YOU know is fake.
That's dumb. I totally plan on using the placebo effect with my kids, but I would never spend money on it. Melted popsicle in a Tylenol bottle FTW.

We use a diffuser for lavender (calming) and peppermint (energy). I don't know it they really "work," but they smell good
I bought the peppermint originally for headaches, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm not really sure why. I have frequent headaches. :-??
I knew someone who tried to cure her uti with herbs and oils. She ended up in the hospital with a severe kidney infection. I'll stick with modern medicine. The only thing I'd use essential oils for is a nice relaxing lavender bath or something. But I haven't even done that in soo long.
I use lavender oil. It is quite stinky but it doesn't bring out a migraine. I have heard peppermint oil is good at the onset of a migraine. You just rub a drop on your wrists or something. Will have to try. I hate taking medicine for migraines since I usually end up throwing it up anyways.

But it's not like I don't go the doctor when I'm sick, or wash my hands with soap, or take Sudafed.
