Thrush?

I think I have thrush. I'm not sure if LO has it because it didn't occur to me that it was probably thrush until after I dropped her at daycare. Has anyone treated thrush with anything over the counter or do I have to call the dr to get a prescription?

Re: Thrush?

  • Ok thanks I'll try that!

  • My LC told me to do a vinegar/water wipe of the nipple after feeding. I think it was 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water. If it's just starting, I'd try that for sure. Let it air dry before putting bra on. And wash all your bras in a vinegar cycle as well to kill bacteria.
I did that (LO was on Nystatin for almost 2 months when I just decided to stop it) and it cleared up. I only had slight tingling on the nipple and some shooting pains, but it never hurt to feed LO though and she had a partial white tongue.
I bought the gentian violet but with LO spitting up all the time I sensed a big purple nightmare and never had to use it.

  • I don't have any pain inside the breast but the top of my nipple looks pretty raw and her initial latch hurt a little last night so hopefully it's early enough to just take care of it myself with one of these options :)

  • Try looking up grapefruit seed extract. I found a couple of sites recommending to apply a solution of one oz. water and 10 drops of GSE and nipple cream after every feeding. I had shooting pain each time LO latched on (still not sure if it was thrush or just milk blister) but it's gone now. I did this for five days.

  • In regards to GSE - I read a few articles that started it has to have the active ingredient or it will not work...I couldn't find one with citricidal where I live (but I'm in a small Canadian city you may have better luck!....)
Oral GSE: Grapefruit seed extract (not grape seed extract). The active ingredient must be “citricidal”. Use tablets or capsules, 250 mg (usually 2 tablets of 125 mg each) three or four times a day orally (taken by the mother)."
