How do I prepare for winter?

Ok this is going to be seriously dumb post but I am really confused on how to pick up stuff for LO for winter. I dress very badly for winter but that's because I am always hot! So here are my questions.

- his size has been changing like crazy. Stuff I thought he'd fit in later fits now and some stuff I got earlier somehow still fits. He is just weirdly tall but kinda lean. How do I anticipate what goes long term without it being too lose or running out in a month. I assume for winter if it's too lose it won't keep him warm? What kind stuff is worth investing in?

- are you doing layers like one long sleeve onesie and perhaps a T and a light jacket or would you rather suggest one nice fat jacket for outside and won't matter what's on the inside?

- what kind of hats and mittens?

I am in NY, we don't have a car so LO will be out and about in the streets a lot.

PS: if you share pics of what you have bought or anticipate buying that will help a ton!

Re: How do I prepare for winter?

  • We'll do layers. Short-sleeved or long-sleeve onesie under whatever he's wearing, plus maybe a sweater/sweatshirt and a coat outdoors. He'll mimic whatever kind of layers I'm wearing. So if I have two long sleeves on, so will he. I have some mittens and a hat I got at a yard sale. If I didn't have a car, I'd look into a one piece bunting where his hands and feet could be covered by that.

  • Is there a point of getting a warm winter coat for the rest of us? Since it can't be worn in the seat?

I have two warm winter coats and a snowsuit. One of them is thinner, and I'm using it with the car seat. I don't see any way around it. I don't have an attached garage, and the car will be cold after being at the store/church/whatever. It's regularly below zero here. No coat is not an option. It's not a super puffy coat and not any thicker than his spring coat or fleece suit from last winter.

His snowsuit is for playing outside, etc.

  • I'm curious about this too..even though our winters are the equivalent to most peoples spring. Its cool to see "how the other half live" (wrong context but it works! lol)

  • I have a warm winter coat that I'll bring with me when we go places for LO outside the car seat. While in the car, I'll put a blanket over her in the car seat.
  • @versed, that is just what I want for DD, so cute and warm looking! I love that it has mitten cuffs!

  • @DreamingBabies‌ - definitely runs big! DS is wearing an 18m onesie since he has a long torso, but he still has a few months of growth left in the 6-12m size. I'm sure most of our babies could wear the 6-12m size through March/April.

It is great that the mittens and feet fold open or closed. Great option.

@carissalynp‌ - mittens for babies are really just a covering (don't bother with thumb openings at this age). The ones with long cuffs are helpful. Mitten goes on then coat keeps it on.

  • I work outside in the cold at football games with my baby....even though it's California, it gets in the 30's and 40's so I have bought the bunting that goes woth my stroller. I have an uppababy vista. The bunting is thin material like an expensive ski jacket...but says will keep baby warm up to weather of 20 degrees.
  • This is something I didn't really even think about too much. We ARE going to MN next week, so I have lots of long sleeve/pant sets, socks, shoes to keep socks on, and a fleece jacket for the car. I also have a hat for her, and hat/mitten set (although I'm not sure we'll use those-she's a thumb sucker, so having her hands in mittens might make her super mad). Beyond that, I plan on putting her in the carrier and wearing my 'maternity' jacket from last year over us both, and using regular blankets in the stroller (although we'll only have the umbrella stroller due to the size of my 'regular' stroller).

I do have a pair of 'snowpants' although I doubt we will need them.

If we need anything else, we'll likely end up buying it while we are up there.

You're bringing all of that to MN next week? Is it really going to be cold enough for all of that already?!

  • It's really not that cold here in MN yet, I promise! It looks like highs for next week are in the high 60s/low 70s and lows are high 40s.

I've been on the lookout for winter coats, but I hadn't even really thought about mittens yet (duh). Thank you for posting about this topic!

  • @ramfan05‌ The main reason I'm bringing all of that is because we will be at my brother's football game, and they had freeze watches last week, so it's making me nervous and want to be extra prepared! If we weren't planning to be out late at the football game, I wouldn't be taking most of it!

  • I reccomended Children's Place 3-in-1 jacket. It's on sale and additional discounts are available. I bought this for my son due to the versatility. My DH and I live in 3-in1 jackets during the winter so we thought we would cover our bases. Plus they have snow pants too along with mittens and hats.

Still waiting for boots to see what size his foot is but I will buy those at Nordstrom.

    Oooooh I love shopping!
