More proof that we are kindreds. I loathe chocolate and I don't have much of a sweet tooth for other things. Oddly enough though, I LOVE to bake... especially cupcakes. In fact, I make a triple chocolate filled cupcake with three different kinds of chocolate that everyone practically fights over. Which is even funnier since I can't even stand to taste test them. The smell of making them makes me queasy.

I've heard a lot of positive feedback on those!
  • I can't stand pumpkin spice lattes anymore. I used to love them, but I just can't stomach them this "fall" season.

Speaking of fall, I can't stand the fact that it's September and it's still 100 degrees out there.

I can only love tit you for the weather commit. I cannot participate in an anti psl statement. ;) it's supposed to be 100 today too.
Trust me, I want to like the psl, I really do! I'm hoping that my taste buds still love the caramel brûlée latte...

I love baking and don't even mind the smell so much.. but I will only eat a tiny little piece.

    Bring on the fruit!!!
  • My UOs this week:
    1. I hate anything pumpkin flavored
    2. I dislike when store clerks (and similar) tell me to have a blessed day, or say god bless you, when I haven't even sneezed.
    3. I truly don't care if people say "gender" when they mean "sex" as long as it's in a context where I can clearly tell their meaning.

  • I think there should be a required application to become parents. This is not feasible, I understand, but a girl can dream. In lieu of that, I think new parents-to-be (and ALL parties living in the soon-to-be baby's home) should be required to submit to mandatory drug testing and continuing education courses in parenting related things, but also personal finance, conflict management, etc.

    It's UO Thursday! Flame away.

Interesting opinion, and sometimes I think I may agree with you on some points there.  It would sure make my life a hell of a lot easier at work.
It is certainly a stance worth further contemplation.

Also I'm getting anxious for them to start putting out holiday decorations!

Me too! Even after years of working in retail and in restaurants (where its on repeat for a month and a half) I still love Christmas music. I listen to it voluntarily, even when it isn't the season :)

(Oh, but "testing out" would be an option. Obviously the banker might not need the personal finance course and a therapist might be fully educated in conflict management.)

You mean I have to put down my hash pipe and attend these stupid classes, @empirerecords24

Haha, no, but seriously. I do agree to an extent, but I think some women are very prepared when they have a kid. *cough* me *cough*. I would be wasting my time. I feel like they should drug test every time a pregnant woman gives blood or urine....without her knowing. That way you get her when she least expects it, and then someone can intervene.

I know a good majority about finances, the one thing that doesn't get me is student loan interest? How am I paying 120$ on a 320$/mo loan in interest, when it says my rate is 4%, I guess it deals with interest accrued every day/weekly??

  • EmpireRecords24, I think it would be eaiser for some of the kids, and the parents too.  Especially in the first few days/weeks.

UO for today, maybe with the reaction on "the random thread is getting earlier and earlier" we should agree to look to GMT for when to start the random thread and not start before midnight GMT or if we are going to stick to US centered times 6am GMT or something.

To be honest, I do play for hours and hours on the weekends. Not as much now but when I was training for Ironman, I'd come home after a 5, 6 or 7 hour bike ride or a 15-20 mile run or a few hours in the pool and honestly, all I wanted to do the rest of the day was veg and eat food. I still play a few hours on the weekends after workouts are done, horses are ridden and a few chores are done and I know that when the baby comes, that will likely stop altogether. And if I'm playing, my husband sits with me and usually we have a running dialogue going about the game. Same if he's playing. Gaming doesn't have to be anti-social and solitary. Plus, who doesn't love a good game of Mario Kart on the Wii with friends?!?! Playing online is one way I stay in touch with my friends 2200 miles away in AZ. We can chat with each other while we're playing.

I'm not scolding you or anything. I just don't want you thinking I'm not that person who plays for hours but I am still that person who hikes, works out, cleans my home, hangs out with friends, goes out with my husband, etc.

But the book is really awesome. She even explains that thing we all do when we've done something amazing or are super happy about something with the arms thrown into the air in victory or joy. It's actually a thing and she explains it. :)
That's us. After we put DD down for bed, we either watch our show or he'll play a game. I'll help him find things and solve puzzles, etc.

@EmpireRecords24, I am not defending someone who ignores their kid to game. But I am a gamer. I've had this discussion too many times to count. Some people spend a lot of money on a t.v. to watch football. Some spend a lot of money to go to Disneyland. Some buy loads and loads of books. Some buy paintings. Some buy a new car every few years. Gamers spend their money on games and systems. A good video game is a work of art itself and can be as compelling and thought-provoking as a good novel. Ever wondered if we have a right to exist at the expense of other species on this planet? Mass Effect did. And spent three games and 6 years making us all wonder, too.

What about genocide? Is it ok to kill an entire race or is it better to brainwash them into thinking your way so they become "non-violent"? I spent an hour trying to make that choice in a game and I could only make one of those two choices. My husband and I spent several hours discussing the ramifications and what it would mean in the real world to be faced with such a choice. Tears of sorrow as your favorite hero dies at the end of the book are shed in games, too. Sometimes, more so, as we become the character, guiding its actions and decisions and identifying with the avatar in a way we cannot in books as the medium is more constricting.

I will suggest you pick up a copy of Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World. It's not just about video games but about the concept of gaming/play in general. It's an amazing book and the woman who wrote it did a great job with the subject.

All that being said, I think most people who don't like games/gamers don't quite understand it. Very few games are really the violent mindless shooters the media portrays them to be. You can still not like to game, but to tell us we are "wasting" our lives because we choose to immerse ourselves in a digital world instead of playing
on Pinterest, or reading a book, or watching a sporting match for hours isn't really fair.
This is the best response I think I've ever read on the subject! I want to print this and hand it out when asked because it's so difficult to explain to 'non-gamers' on the spot, sometimes! VERY well put! :)<3 *extra love-tit*

My kids are beating the crap out of each other right now and I just do not even have the strength to stop them.  My 5 year old keeps waking up at 5:45am, he is an exhausted mess after school.  My 2.5 year old is testing every boundary known to man.  Before he ripped his diaper off and rubbed his ass cream on my black work pants and the couch.  My husband hasn't been home in 4 days.  I work full time.  I am anemic which makes me more tired.

I picked up one of their friend's after school today as a favor to my friend, and took them all 3 of them food shopping with me before cleaning up when we got home and making dinner, which neither of my kids ate and both cried about.  I am f-ing tired.  It is survival of the fittest over here, a fine example of Darwinism.  (They already stopped fighting btw).
