Opinions on sleeping arrangements?

Hi June '13. I haven't been around for a long time, but I'm hoping to get some opinions from all of you knowledgeable mothers. DH and I will be moving into my parents' basement in a couple of months. There is a kitchen in the center. On the left there is a very large living room area, and we plan to make one part of it her play area. This is underneath my parents' bedroom, so it is quieter. On the right of the kitchen there is a bedroom already furnished with a king sized bed. This is underneath my parents' kitchen, so it is a little loud. We can't decide where we should have DD sleep. If we sleep her in the play area, the pros are that she'll be in her own space and it will be quiet since it's under the bedroom, but the cons will be that we'll have to be really quiet any time she is napping or when she goes to bed since there is no way to completely separate the play/sleeping area from the rest of the living area and we would also have to run multiple heating units in the winter. The pros of having her sleep in the bedroom are that we would only have to run one heating unit and we would be able to use our living area freely. The cons of that arrangement are that she'd still be in our room and possibly get disturbed by us coming in later than her and the noise in the kitchen above her might wake her up. That could probably be mitigated by white noise though. If this were your situation, what would you do? For background info, currently we cosleep and she still night nurses, and we are trying to night wean her now. We do not want to continue cosleeping and are really eager for her to be in her own bed and sleep through the night. Thanks. Sorry it got kind of long.

Re: Opinions on sleeping arrangements?

  • I would definitely do a crib in the bedroom. We have a similar set up when we stay with my parents with a suite in the basement and we have found it is so much easier to just have a bedroom be for everyone sleeping- whenever that may be- than changing around the room you can be noisy in throughout the day. We also just keep the bedroom as beds only pretty much that reason.

  • Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. I was leaning toward that option, so that's what we'll do.
  • We have a really similar set up now in my sisters one bedroom basement apt. She sleeps in the bedroom under the kitchen and we sleep in the living room that's connected to the kitchen. The noise upstairs doesn't bother her and we like not having to be quiet when she's sleeping. We have a daybed that goes from couch to bed from ikea that's easy to use.

  • Another vote for crib in bedroom. We are in a similar situation (basically the same). We co sleep as well and when G was asleep I would turn on the fan and his music and that would drown out enough noise from upstairs. It would suck to be stuck in your bedroom while she's sleeping.

  • Thanks. We also thought about moving our bed into the living area. We may do that if it doesn't work out, but it sounds like this will be a good start. It's nice to hear of others in a similar situation.
