Does anybody still do yearly mall Santa photos these days?
Yup! It is a fun tradition that the grandparents get in on. My parents love taking Ella to the same awesome mall Santa that me and my siblings saw when were little.
Two years ago, my girls were 8 and 9 and asked me "the truth" about Santa. Thye suspected he was not real, I think some kids said something about it at school. So I told them I was Santa. Their eyes grew huge and they (having watched The Santa Clause movies) thought that like Scott Calvin, I had put on the suit making me the real guy! They were so excited that I got to be the guy to travel the world on Christmas. They even told some other kids, who must have just thought them to be crazy. They didn't ask any follow up questions though...
Even last year, I think they still thought I was actually the person, Santa. I have never clarified. Who knows what they will think this year...
We won't be doing Santa, mostly for religious reasons. In fact I'm going to do my best to really minimize gifts for Christmas at all. We will do a few gifts to bring in the meaning of generosity and thankfulness, but we will not make gift opening the focus, and hope to keep it as one of the more minor traditions of Christmas.
This will be very difficult to enforce with the grandparents. We will see how that goes.
I don't really care either way. If your family does Santa, OK. If your family doesn't, that's OK too. If you subscribe to the anti-Santa philosophy and your kid tells my kid that Santa isn't real, that's OK. It's bound to happen. No malice had or intended. If my kid presents to me other reasons why she thinks Santa isn't real (outside of "Because Johnny told me so") then I'll give up on the gig and let her know he's not real. Until the point where kids can rationally think about Santa, I don't see a harm in allowing them to believe in a little bit of that magic.
Besides, I selfishly want to see her get excited about the concept.
Re: Santa... Full of Christmas magic or Fat Guy in a big red coat?
