HELLP syndrome, intro, and birth story

Hello. I have been following this board since I found out I was pregnant but never posted as you all seemed to always answer questions I have had. U all have always provided much needed support and laughter. Please let me know if this is already been discussed. I had my daughter, Bella Wynn, on august 23 at 35 weeks and 4 days due to HELLP syndrome. She was 5lb 10oz and 19 inches of perfection. I was having severe right upper quadrant pain (that i thought was just heartburn at first) protein in urine, and my labs were a mess. An epidural was not an option since my platelets were so low. I'm glad I didn't have my heart set on an epidural, but it was not easy kudos to all of you that choose that route! After 12 hours of labor she was born and almost immediately sent to nicu for some oxygen, and an Iv. We are currently still in nicu as she is learning how to wake up every 3-4 hours and take in enough food on her own. She had her feeding tube pulled today and we hope to go home in next couple days. 35 weeks may be close but they are definitely still premature! I've seen a couple posts within other threads about ladies who developed HELLP or have had it in previous pregnancies so my question is are you as nervous as I am about the thought of another child? Did your doctor recommend any further testing? Did u have any symptoms leading up to discovering u had HELLP? Sorry for the long post.. Guess this was an intro, question, and birth story all in one :)

Re: HELLP syndrome, intro, and birth story

  • I was very nervous to have another bc of my experience with pre-e with HElLP with first. Delivered him at 35 weeks and spent 10 days in NICU. Drs told me there was a 40% chance....surprise...I had NO issues with BP, swelling, playlets, kidney or liver numbers this time. Other than GD it was a perfect pregnancy. Here we are at 39 weeks 2 days! Every pregnancy is different.....you can't let this one predict your next.

  • Thank you for your response it's nice to hear from someone that's been through it and is now experiencing a full term, healthy pregnancy! Thank you!
  • I had it with my twins. Delivered them at 34+4. We spent 30 days in the scn but that's because they were iugr. I was nervous to get pregnant again but my Dr assured me it was only bc I was pg with multiples. I had a 30% chance of having those issues again. I am currently 37+3 weeks and having no issues this time at all. My OB is keeping a closer eye and I did get an extra u/s bc of my iugr last time and I was measuring behind a bit. I also got extra blood work to make sure my platelet and liver levels were fine which they are.
