  • My baby started sleeping again! After weeks and weeks of waking every 1-2 hours at night we've had 3 nights of 3 hour stretches and the last two nights she's even slept one 5 hour stretch followed by 2-3 hour stretches. Can't wait for a baby that finally STTN! But why am I the most tired I've ever been when this is the longest sleep I've had in months ?

  • I'm green with envy right now. To all with LOs that are STTN, what do you think changed? Anything you're doing differently? I wanna be where you are!
  • IDK what DD is going through right now, but it's making the 4mo wakeful period seem downright pleasant in comparison. Ugh.

@fussybunch‌ For the last 2 months DD was nursing almost every single hour all night long, she was waking up after every sleep cycle and didn't know how to self soothe and go back to sleep without nursing to sleep. But for 2 weeks I've been working on not always nursing to sleep. She clearly didn't need all those feedings! So every other wakeup I tried to get her back to sleep without nursing. What works for us is if I pin her arms down (she still flails a lot). That alone gets her back to sleep 70% of the time. The other 30% I hold her arms and put my face against her face. I never let her cry because don't think it would work with her and don't want to wake up the toddler. After doing this for about a week she started waking up less often. Sometimes she still lets out 1-2 cries when she would have woken up but rolls over and goes back to sleep!!! Yay! I'm hoping for another 5 hour stretch tonight!

Thank you @spinsoffresonance! I'm going to try this. The hard part is I'm catering to her every cry in order not to wake DH and she's getting used to it. Sending tons of good thoughts your way for 5+ hours tonight. Thanks again!
  • @QOTR Nothing changed...??! (And it looks like after two good nights were back to "normal" :/

  • @fussybunch‌ mine is finally sleeping 6-7 hour stretches after months of awful sleep. We are coming out of a leap but I did the same as pp said. I just stopped offering the boob as much and I did let her fuss for 10 minutes sometimes a little crying not much before I went in. A lot of times she'd just go back to sleep and sometimes she wouldn't so if she ate recently I wouldn't feed her that much and put her back down. If she woke up then I picked her up patted her and left. Sometimes she fussed other times she rolled over and went to sleep but again just for 5 or 10 minutes. What has really made a difference is her blanket. I know you're not supposed to let them have one but is an A&A and she puts herself to sleep with it and moves it from her face well. I was nervous the first couple nights but now she not as much and she does really well with it. Could be a fluke though!

  • We finally transitioned DS from his swing to his crib and he'll actually go down awake. He was STTN and then he started rolling over so we had to stop swaddling his arms. Now he wakes up 1-2 times a night. I think he either wakes up on his stomach and can't roll back and gets upset, flails his arms and wakes himself up or hits the crib rails. Sometimes he seems genuinely hungry when he wakes so we feed him, even though he's gone 12 hours before. Any suggestions on how to get him back to STTN or does he just have to learn how to roll the other way and stop flailing?

Thank you @Hbird05! Fluke or not, I'm gonna try the blanket thing! Oh, and enjoy your sleep- It must feel amazing! I do need to let her start fussing more. I typically grab her a min after fussing cause I do not want her to wake DH, but I'm sure that's part of what's biting me.
  • @fussybunch‌ thanks! I will try to enjoy it. I feel like my body is just so used to waking up so many times that I am still getting up all the time and checking on her. At least I don't have to go in and feed her and rock her though so I can't complain. Let me know how it goes with the blanket :) oh and just when I was saying she does so good with hers she takes it and balls it up in her face then falls asleep. I went to go move it after a little and she wakes up a couple minutes later and grunts like she's mad then throws it back up in her face and goes to sleep. She is able to breathe but it still scares me so I waited until she was out for a while then moved it and she did fine the rest of the night.

  • Ugh. We're already on the third wakeup of the night. This last time she sat halfway up, opened her eyes, and started full-on crying. After 5 minutes of trying to soothe her down again, she was just getting more agitated. Baby girl is sick & teething, so I'm thinking it's going to be a long one here.
  • How I hate diaper leaks in the middle of the night! She slept 6 hours which was great so can't complain too much but now at 3 am we are still trying to get her back down after leaking through her diaper and having to change her. I was up from 2:30-5 last night too with her because she fell and I had to keep an eye on her so she slept in her pack n play in our room and was not real sure where she was. So glad she is doing alright though! Just hoping this doesn't create another habit of early morning wake ups. We were finally getting out of that!

I spoke too soon. Previous night we were back to 2-3hour stretches and last night was 1-2 hours again. And it's getting harder and harder to get her back to sleep without nursing. So tired!

  • DD has been going to sleep very good in her crib but the past few days she has been havibg a hard time going to sleep and actually full on crying instead of her normal whine. Her first tooth broke through monday and she is going through a growth spurt I think. Is that most likely the cause?
  • Up every one to three hours! I guess we need to re-cio. Not looking forward to that. What happened? Ugh! And up at 5am. And work in a few hours. I want sleep!

This happened to us Saturday might then last night she slept 6 hours then 5 so could of been some mini growth spurt or something.

  • @Hbird05‌ thanks for the hope! I hope it passes soon!

@kittyriot‌ and @Cook251‌ I also nursed LO at every wake up last night. Oops! He was also just much fussier than normal and even more so than he was with round 1 of Ferber. I couldn't stand to hear him cry. Hopefully they'll all come out of this funk soon and just sleep!

  • DS started not going to sleep before 10pm all of a sudden this weekend. This is not good. We start bedtime routine somewhere between 8-8:30 and it's diaper, pjs, book/boob, and he used to be asleep that way by 9. Now when we're done the routine by 9 DS is still wide awake and stays that way until 10. This is no good. Help?

Our bedtime was 6:30 and she has also moved to a later time even though she's clearly ready for bed she won't go to sleep until 7:30 or 8 and she is a beast by then. She also is trying to not take a 3rd nap so that's been pleasant. Tonight she was up every hour again if not more. What the?!?! I hate that she's so unpredictable. Some nights she's up only once and others she does this. I don't get it! So frustrated!!!

  • This morning DS took a 20 min nap. I'm so fed up of these shitty cat naps that have been going on for 3 months now. He's tired all the time but won't sleep longer than 30min max and won't go back to sleep once he's awake.

@Emmagk‌ I'm with ya! I have gotten like a week where she took an hour nap a day and thought it was changing then back to crap naps and she's always tired and grumpy. It makes me not want to be around her. I know that sounds bad but it's true. I'm tired if her crappy attitude all because she won't sleep and fights me every time! She just whines all day for weeks now but when we do get good nights she's a completely different baby. Like I said we got a week if that and random days in the last 3 months the rest has been crappy and always whiney! Ugh!!! Fed up!

i completely understand when you say not wanting to be around LO sometimes. There are times i just want to put DS down and walk away. I havent been away from DS for more than 2 hours since he was born and I really need a break now.

  • Mines been doing this for weeks. I might get a day off from it but pretty much every day. What the heck is going in?! I will say she's kind of getting better playing by herself for a couple minutes but that's it.

I know this sounds crazy, but have you guys tried an EARLIER bedtime? We did this wiht DD when she was doing this, around this same age, and it worked awesome. We were able to gradually move it a bit later, but she was going to bed at like, 6/615 and that worked for us.

Since she will not take a later nap I've been wondering if I need to do this but I feel like when she goes to bed at 6:30 she always wakes an hour later like a nap but she will go back down and sleeps until 6 with MOTN feedings. It couldn't hurt to try 6.

Edit to add: today she woke from her last nap at 3:30 so I was trying to get her to bed by 6:30 and she almost was asleep but then started acting like she had to use the bathroom so I was trying to help her with that since that's the reason we were up every hour last night and it's now 8:00 and she's finally sleeping so could be another long night since she's overtired!

  • Anyone had success getting LO to wake up later in the AM? DS seems to wake up at 430/5 AM, wide awake and ready to play. He goes to bed around 630ish with little fuss and sleeps all night (thankyoubabyjesus!) until 430/5.  I try putting the soother back in, but after 3 tries its clear that's not enough. Its been extra-rough lately as DD has been waking up at some point during the night so last night I was up at 330 with her, then 430/445 w DS! He's up for 45/60 mins and has a big bottle, dipe change, etc, and then goes back to sleep until 730, when DD also wakes up. Im soooooo tired.

We tried this tonight.   He last woke a little after 3, which would have made the next nap time a little after 5.  I'm trying to avoid napping after 5, so we started bedtime routine a little before 6 and he went down easily at 620, but treated it as a nap.  He's up and tired and crying now, but refusing to go back down.    Last night this routine lasted FIVE HOURS.   Wish us luck.

  • We're in sleep hell.  I've only had about 4 hours of sleep each of the past 3 nights.   I'm dizzy and nauseated today.  Something has got to give.

  • Transitioning to crib for realz this time. She's asleep for the second time now. The first lasted all of 60 seconds. It's been 10 minutes now -- I'm afraid to hope it will last.

I know I'm being ridiculous, but I'm having a hard time feeling good about this transition. On the one hand, I feel horribly guilty that I let it go this late (5.5 months!). On the other hand, she's been such a fussy sleeper that I feel a little worried she's going to get worked up and fully awake every 45 all night.

Typing this out it seems even more ridiculous. But: She's a delightful, energetic easily entertained baby when awake. The only real struggle is sleep -- she has a really hard time settling into sleep because everything is *so* interesting.

Am I going to lose my charming happy excited girl to the monster of sleep deprivation? The more sleep deprived she gets, the harder it is for her to fall asleep.
  • @Scotty138‌ , there's no sleep here, either. Wishing good sleep to your house & mine.
  • Last night DD Was up 3 times before 11pm, then 3am, 4.30am (went back down without nursing), 5.30am, 7am and up for the day at 9am. At least I get to sleep in until 9!

Are you guys using humidifiers? We haven't taken ours out of storage yet and I think the dry air from the heat could be part of the problem. I can barely breathe in here and it's giving me a soar throat, I bet it's worse for the kids.

We were up five times last night. I'm pretty sure I spent more of the night trying to get DD back to sleep than I did actually sleeping. Zombie mommy today.

Eta: On the plus side, she did sleep in the crib all night, no caving on my part.
  • Our monitor shows the humidity, and I was surprised at how quickly it dropped down from 60% to 30% once the weather turned. Even with the humidifier going, it's only up to 45%. But it makes a big difference for DD's sleep.

So every night, within an hour after going to bed dd wakes up and cries. Sometimes if we give her a minute she can get back to sleep, but most nights she needs a quick visit from me. A visit from daddy results in hysterics. It's not a huge deal since she usually goes right back to sleep if I go in, but it would be nice to not have to every night. Any idea why and what I can do about it?

Last night after that initial wakeup she slept through til she was hungry at 5:30 so it's not something that happens every cycle, just the first one.

Our LO was doing this for weeks and still does every once in a while. I don't know if this is what changed it but I found that if I didn't rock her completely asleep but just asleep enough so she didn't protest then she stayed asleep. If she was completely out then she'd wake screaming an hour later. I think she was going through some separation anxiety and was scared since she didn't feel me lay her down. Not sure though. Also if she takes a cat nap later in the afternoon I find that she doesn't have this hour later waking. I'm wondering if another reason could be she gets overtired without the later cat nap and I read that when they are overtired they will wake shortly after being put down. Could also be a growth spurt and needing one last feed. Sorry I'm not much help but I can say for us it did go away and only happens maybe once a week now.
