Unisom the last 3 nights

Hey guys, so I've been having issues sleeping through the night. My OB says that it's ok to take unisom at night to help. She didn't specify whether to take half a tab or a whole one, so the last three nights, I took whole tabs.
I was reading random posts on here, and a lot of people take half a tab at night.
I know you all aren't docs, but since it's a holiday, my docs office is closed.
Just wanted to know what your thoughts were on this, if taking a whole one for 3 nights in a row is dangerous to the little one, if I should take start doing half a ran from here on out...
I'm on my mobile so my info I don't think is available, I'm 13w2d today, had NT scan Thursday.

Thank you everyone!

  • I take a whole unisom almost every night for the past month. So far baby is doing well and I have been able to sleep at night. I am a little tired in the morning but I feel that I do much better the nights I take it.

  • I only take half but taking a whole is not dangerous.

  • It's category A -- you're fine to take a whole tab. I do. It's magic!
  • I have the Unisom gels that have 50 mg. I wonder if mine are safe...I obviously can't split in half.
  • Awesome, thank you all for your responses! ! I took unisom every night till I found out I was pregnant, found out unisom is ok to take and slept like a baby again last night for the first time in 4 months haha.
    Thank you !!

  • My doc said to take half of one for morning sickness & it works great! Half is also enough to knock me out but don't think anything wrong with the whole pill.

This is what I take as well. My doc just said that they were safe to take and to follow the directions on the box.

  • I take two every night (50mg total). Before getting KU I took an rx sleeping pill, I have terrible chronic insomnia. My baby is healthy and fine. It's usually half a tab for nausea, not specifically for sleep.
  • @jessuhmarie‌ I'm the same way, I toss and tenure and wide awake in the middle of the night for no reason.
I'm so happy to hear that you guys experience the same thing and some take the same amount of the med as me. Big relief!
Thank you all for your help!! I appreciate it!

In my understanding, The tablets and gels are a different active ingredient. The gels are Diphenhydramine, which you might recognize and Benadryl, as it is the same thing. The tablets are Doxylamine, and come in 25mg. Both are understood to be safe during pregnancy.

I have a question for you gals: I am one of those oddballs that have a counter reaction to Benadryl, (Ie: it wakes me up instead of making me drowsy) and it seems that Unisom, being closely relate, does the same. (which, might I add, is the LAST thing I need right now.) Do any of you have any other suggestions for getting through the insomnia?

  • @stellarsoundz‌ I would ask your doctor about Diclegis/Diclectin. As a PP stated, it has an antihistamine and high dose of vitamin B. It's primary use is for MS, but it definitely has a sedative effect too. I take two at night and one in the morning. However, having reread @ToasterCat‌'s post, it sounds like the antihistamine in it is the same one as in Unisom, so maybe not for you... Worth an ask?

I may as well. I don't much care what ends up working, just as long as it's safe for the LO and I can finally get some sleep!!!

After your first tri, you can get an rx for ambien. It's safe to take during pregnancy. However you can build up a tolerance to it, and it's addictive. It also has unpleasant side-effects for some people. I used to take it regularly for my insomnia.

I would reccomend trying natural remedies if you haven't already. Melatonin, valerian root, l-tryptophan. Also try a vitamin d supplement, but be sure you take it during the day. Vit d is crucial for sleep, but it also temporarily inhibits melatonin production. So don't take it close to bed time.

    Eta: ugh, quote fail.
  • I was going to quote, but quote fail chaining seems silly. I'm using melatonin with little benefit at the moment. I see an OB on Friday as a follow up for my ER visit, I'll ask then about ambien later on. I've been on it before for insomnia, and had no adverse reaction. Thanks for the tip!
