I was listening to a really interesting discussion on NPR the other day (maybe last week?) about the overprescribing of antibiotics and how people are not able to develop healthy gut flora.
It was extremely interesting. A statistic that was pointed out was something like…children under five are, on average, prescribed antibiotics like 10 times for various reasons. Thus provoking the rest of the discussion
@Mandmeesh They are definitely over prescribed. I work in an ER, and our practitioners will diagnose a child with a virus (which doesn't need an antibiotic) but will still prescribe one, "to cover anything, just in case." And it's what the parents want.

Totally makes sense about gut flora. I've heard that a healthy gut makes a huge difference in overall health.
Ugh, I'm sore torn about probiotics for M. I take them and think they're awesome for me, but I feel like breastmilk should be enough for her. But maybe I'm not eating the right combo of foods for her gut flora. And I was gbs+ so I was on antibiotics when she was born. But does giving her probiotics promote specific strains that aren't good at self-procreation rather than "natural" strains that can sustain in her gut on their own? Ugh.
I think it depends on which probiotic you're taking. The ones I used to get at the health food store have several strains of "good" bacteria, need to be refrigerated, and lose potency after a while. I bought some Culterelle a few weeks ago at Target b/c I needed to take an antibiotic, and it only has one kind of bacteria in it. I haven't done a great deal of research on it, but one so-called expert I saw on TV once said that the more strains it had, the better. Ultimately I need to do more research, but for now I think I'm going to skip them for L as long as he's nursing and doesn't need antibiotics.
ETA The grammar in this is terrible, but hopefully it makes sense.
I plan to hold off on probiotics. At least unless P has to be on antibiotics herself, and she's started on solids. Once she starts solids, I would prefer natural probiotics like yogurt and stuff than the pills or powders. Unless you feel like M needs them. Mom knows best, trust your gut. But my impression of your comments is that it's normal immature baby gut that will get better as she ages.

Water kefir seriously helps L poop normal.
And this humidity is wreaking havoc on my crimps.
I need to research this. You make you're own kefir right?
And I'm glad I chopped my hair off, the humidity really messes with my hair, to the point that I just have to pull it back. I think it has to do with how thick it is.
Yeah, I'm just doing water kefir ATM tho. I want to try milk kefir later. Maple does milk tho.
With S I always had a ponytail to keep it away from her, so with L I chopped it while pregnant. Everyone flipped out lol. But I hate ponytails bc they give me headaches and I figured why suffer through a hot summer pregnant and with a hot head. I really want my hair to grow long so I'm only threatening to chop it, but either way I have to straighten it and crap to make it look good.
I feel you're pain. My hair was so damaged from using a straightener to keep it under control.
That's partially why I got it all chopped off. I had a lot of color damage and breakage.
I have a laundry question. I made the mistake of throwing a new shirt in with my diapers and the color ran. The weird part is that the color has only stuck to certain things. Like the inside of my PW pail liners and not the outside. Or the outside of a diaper and not the inside. Or both the inside and outside of other diapers. But none of the prefolds (I'm sure that's the whole synthetic/natural fibers thing). Overall nothing is too horribly harmed, but will this fade with time and/or sun? And why only certain surfaces?
@Mapleme I had my dazzle diapers bleed on my white diapers. It faded over time. Not sure if this comment is relevant.

we just have totally different expectations for birthdays and i'm never going to do it right.
so are you the one that wants to throw a big party and make a big deal of every birthday or is she the one that expects it?
She expects it. She had wanted a family party which we had on sat. But today is the actual day and apparently anything else's I'm doing is not ok (cuz I didn't bring it up this morning).
I always expect nothing, therefore I'm always surprised when I do get something.
@sarenu1 In my house we call this "lowered expectations." We keep low expectations for everything, so we are disappointed less often, but impressed quite a bit!
Sorry stringy. Are you at least feeling better now?

Maple, I washed a black pair of Ls pants with diapers and a few turned gray. They lightened over time.
Stringy that's how D was. I'm supposed to carry on his family traditions and crap, but he wouldn't tell me until after he was obv pissed. And even when I tried to do it right he was still all bummed for who knows why.
You just have to do your best and if they don't like it then sucks for them. They'll get over it.
This sounds like my mom. Her birthday is always within a week or two of mother's day, and she always ends up pissed off at all of us. We never do it right, or enough, or occasionally we do too much. We still haven't figured out what her expectations are, but we just can't get it right.

I'm sorry Stringy. And I hope you feel better soon.
If it's any consolation, you're not alone. We had an IL birthday go south a few years ago due to mismatched expectations, and for no good reason, DH and I caught the brunt of the blame. Because even though we endured a family vacation a few weeks prior, celebrated said birthday, then celebrated again the prior weekend (and baked a key lime pie from scratch), which involved 2 hours of travel each way, we got flak because we didn't call or send a card ON THE DAY. The fallout lasted for months. And all this during a time when we were struggling to keep our marriage healthy because I was in grad school in one city and he was working in another.
I just don't understand carrying big birthday expectations into adulthood. Maybe for big milestone brithdays. But the in-between ones? I guess it's just not my thing.
Input my milk kefir grains in the fridge cuz I couldn't handle all the kefir, especially since they had grown. I just realized that my mom probably threw those out when she was watching DS1 this weekend when we were in the hospital. She threw out a bunch of stuff.... DH was pissed. And I kinda am too, but she watched DS all weekend, and I don't want to see ungrateful. And she cleaned a ton too. But she threw out a to of stuff in the process.... Some of it I don't even know why.
My 5 year wedding anniversary is in October and I have ZERO clue what to do for hubby. Doesn't help that he already ordered something that he says will make me all teary eyed and sentimental.
He's so much better at romantic stuff and gifts and I hate it b/c I suck at creative, sentimental things.
I think for my 40th I asked DH to take DS and the dog for an afternoon so that I could take a nap. I can't remember now, but I'm sure it was a very good nap.
Does anyone know anything about side snapping Flips? I got two hand me downs in Lovelace and Moonbeam (I think), but I've never seen them with side snaps (which seem like a PITA). Has anyone seen these before? I would post a pic, but I'm at the bakery and the Flips aren't.
I have never seen a BumGenius with side snaps.....
I wouldn't have even thought that they were BG if it weren't for the Lovelace. If I had seen them online I would have assumed that they were a conversion, but SIL only CDed for a short time and didn't love it, so I don't see her going to the trouble of converting anything. Although she lives in an artsy community, so maybe a friend did it? When she gave them to me she commented about paying a ton for them because BG is expensive in Canada, so they seem like something she bought like this. I'll have to take pictures when I get home.
Sometimes a diaper company won't have exclusive rights to a print. For example, I think I've seen the Dinos (Blueberry) used for a cover by another company who I can't remember off the top of my head. I've also seen it just as fabric available for sale. Maybe it's a particular print designer, and they license the print out, but it might not be an exclusive license. Hope that makes sense, I've got 2 glasses of wine in me at the moment.
That is totally it! No wonder SIL had so many CD issues. The rest of her stash was a box of CDs that had been used by 5+ other kids in her neighborhood. I'm just about 100% sure that she thinks that they were regular diaper covers. No wonder she had leaks.
Considering they start at 20lbs, I would not be surpirsed.
