Free Doula Drawbacks?

I went to an event where I met with some doulas who are offering their services for free because they haven' completed their certification yet.  Even though they aren't fully certified, could there be any drawbacks to using them?  I figure this is their passion and they have some classes under their belt so they automatically have more knowledge than me since I'm a FTM. Could this hurt my delivery experience in any way?

Re: Free Doula Drawbacks?

  • Inexperience can always be a draw back, but these Doulas need experience. If you don't mind being the guinea pig then go for it.

  • Classes don't mean they know more than you btw.

  • I don't know the qualifications/education of a doula but I'm wondering if they have a mentor while they are training for their certification?

  • I had one and it was a great experience. But, I interviewed her carefully and made sure we were in sync first. I could also tell immediately that she was very passionate about her new profession and went above and beyond at every step. I interview a lot for a living, though.

    Mine did.
  • Mine has a mentor also. She's still getting her certification but is a good friend, and she has a mentor who is a doula studying to be a midwife.

  • There are pros and cons, but I like the idea of hiring a free doula and giving her a chance to train. Think about it: Someone who's new to the field, although she isn't a seasoned pro, will have enthusiasm and perhaps be more excited than someone who's been around for a while.

I'd say interview first, and make sure she's been to at least a few births. You probably don't want to be the very first.

  • The biggest con is that they are probably not well experienced. Basically you get what you pay for. You don't know what you are going to get and can't really ask for references. Don't assume they know more than you do. You can be well read and know more about childbirth, the classes aren't the ultimate teaching tool.

Before deciding, I would ask about their experience and what methods they recommend for easing discomfort during labor. I would also look at doulas in your area that are well established and meet with one to see the difference (if paying for one is an option for you). I think it is more important to have a real connection with another woman who has achieved your wanted birth experience. Even the most qualified doula may just not connect well with you personally. If you are planning for and very attached to the idea of a natural birth, having a midwife or natural birth friendly OB along with a well qualified doula you connect with will really increase your chances of meeting that goal. Good luck!
