January 2013 Moms

Are you ready for this crazy story?

So, here is the update on my trip to NY! I drove 2 hours and dropped Taylor off at SIL's at around 10AM on Sunday. I then proceeded to drive the 3 hours to NYC and sit in traffic for a quite a while in Manhattan, but finally go to the hotel around 2:45PM, 15 minutes before my first meeting. During Sunday I got a few texts that the boys were playing great (she has an almost 3 year old), that Taylor was happy and everything was good. They even got him to nap and to bed at a decent hour. Sunday night was a large kick-off party for the conference that my company sponsored and I organized, so we were there cleaning until almost 2 AM and went to get some sleep - luckily my boss decided we didn't need to do any type of early meeting so I could sleep in. OH NO, that couldn't happen. I get a frantic call from SIL at 8AM (which she had said she'd only call in an emergency) that Taylor had some liquid in his ear and she was taking him to the doctor. She took him to urgent care and it turns out he does have a mild ear infection and they said he may have a small cold. Well this threw my SIL into a frenzy - without even calling she took Taylor to my parents and said that she couldn't keep him because he would get her son sick (thankfully my stepmom could watch him for a few hours). She called me and said that he was way too sick and couldn't be around her son - and since H was in a conference of his own my only choice was to come home from NYC, my first HUGE event with my company, not even 24 hours after I got there. So I drove 10 hours in 2 days.

So, after all of this insanity I get to my parents house and Taylor is sitting on the couch giggling. He runs over to me and...he seems fine. No runny nose. No sneezing. No sniffling. No coughing. No fever. NOTHING. I felt bad that he has an ear infection but - THEY AREN'T CONTAGIOUS!!! My parents couldn't believe the scene my SIL made - apparently she called the church nursery and her parents because he had been both places and also told my parents she had to Lysol her entire house. Wow.

So that was my big first trip. Of course I'm pretty pissed at SIL - if roles were reversed and her son had a cold, I would definitely still keep him, try to keep washing hands - but it wouldn't be the end of the world if Taylor would catch a cold because of it.

  • First - I'm impressed that you drove into Manhattan!  You are brave :).  The only time I ever drove in Manhattan was loading up a rental car to leave when I moved to CA, and even that was a nightmare!

Second - wow, your SIL is sort of a drama queen, huh?  Have her children never had a cold?  That would drive me NUTS!!!!

  • @reecefamily It really wasn't bad until I was a mile away from the hotel!

And both - yes, she is dramatic. She is a SAHM and a germaphobe, so she refuses to have her child around other children if there is even the slightest possibility someone is sick. We have talked about how she will likely have a meltdown when her son goes to school and is constantly getting sick! I still didn't quite expect that reaction, though.

  • You had me at "are you ready for this crazy story"!!

And WTF sister-in-law. Really? It's an ear infection...kids go to daycare with colds, so even if he did/does have a cold is it really that big of a deal...to frantically call everyone he's had contact with and scream Lysol???

Wow, I'm sorry you had to miss your big event...even more sorry your SIL is a dumbs*it. I'm sorry, but my family has kept J when he's snotting and sneezing all over and they didn't even bat an eye at it. It's called handwashing!!

For Christmas I'd totally get her a fake Emergency Doctor PASS, one of those full body containment suits and 12 bottles of Lysol...maybe she'll get the hint she's a freak!

I'm a pretty laid back mom. B ate a handful of sand at the park last week, and two of the moms near us made a snotty comment. I just dusted her off and had her rinse her mouth out. My point is, sometimes I think I don't worry enough. Then I read stories like this and realize I worry exactly the right amount! So sorry for all the drama!
I'm pretty much like this, too.  I know a 15 year old who has never cut up fruit or vegetable or helped prepare dinner because she is not allowed to use a knife and the kitchen is dangerous.  Aargh.  She is also not allowed to play outside much because her mom is afraid she'll get kidnapped or get West Nile from a mosquito bite.  She is going to be so clueless when she goes off to college, if she ever does.  DD is going to be helping in the kitchen when she's like 5, and she already plays outside a ton!  I really don't get worrying about everything you can't control.

  • I married the child of a helicopter mom and that aspect of our relationship is not pleasant.

Hope your bosses were understanding, and that your LO's ears get better soon.

  • Thanks ladies for commiserating with me! I'm still in a bit of shock at how everything happened.

@clarypax Prior to the tubes, that's what would happen with DS. His fever would skyrocket and he would just lay on me and whine. This time, though, it was minor and he didn't have a fever at all (which is how I missed them in the first place). She actually told my step-mom that he was "good birth control" for thinking about a 2nd child because he has so much energy.

He's feeling great and went back to d/c yesterday and is fine. Still no cold symptoms to speak of.

  • She is going to have her world turned upside down when he son starts school with no immune system. I watch our cousin's little girl during the week... she is 15 months. She often comes here with colds but I realize that my son has to get sick sometimes to build up his system.
