Is anyone still screen free at 3?

Is anyone still screen free at 3 (TV and iPad/iPhone and DVD player in car)? Some people look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them this and they say, "you'll change" or "wait till you have 2 kids". I'm just curious if I'm in the abnormal range or just uncommon. My friend just bought her 18 month an iPad mini, so that's what spurred on the question.

  • Sheesh. It was a serious question, I just wondered about percentages. My first post on the parenting board, why in the world would I want to humblebrag? People are awfully defensive about this issue... My friend was, too. I have no idea if "this board is for me" but it think it would take more than one post to discover that, anyway. Honestly, I was just curious. And I am on an iPad with the tv on right now, so I'm not anti-technology myself. I'm having another kid and we are thinking of introducing TV to our 3 year old.

  • Er, no. I'm not sure how I would juggle getting the baby to sleep/nap without the help of Treehouse channel for the 3yo when I'm solo parenting.

Srsly tho, you're doing your kid a disservice. He's going to be terrible at pop culture trivia if you keep this nonsense up.
And he won't be able to relate to any of those "you're a 90's kid if you remember..." memes. Sad.
I don't know if you guys are joking or not but I think this is actually an issue. Being able to relate on some pop culture level is important. In law school I volunteered teaching 5th graders about the justice system. In my 1 st class we had a gtky activity that was like. Your name and favorite thing. Most kids answered "Jane and I like [whatever that popular disney show was 10 years ago". Kid x goes "my name is Bob and I like raw pie". Know why I still remember him? Because he was weird. Not that weird can't be good, but when it's largely because his mom wouldn't give him screen time (she opted him out of computer class even) or let him eat cooked food? YeAh you're not going to be doing your kid any favors
People who claim to nothing about pop culture annoy the crap out of me.  Mostly because they tend to be so pretentious about it.  "OMG - I have no idea who the Kardashians are.  I've been too busy farming organic wheat grass!"  Bullshit - you know you watched her sex tape.
I mix up Khloe and the other one. Karma?

-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
  • DH went to take a shower, and I had resolved myself to putting the kids to bed, and instead promptly fell asleep on the couch while my 4&5 yr old watched Frozen.

Then I woke up to this thread and all I have to say is REALLY?? No screen time at 3?? Never seen a disney movie?

Oh, and I'd rather have "let it go" stuck in my head than "do you wanna build a snowman".....that's the worst.

I agree. One of my most vivid memories was when I was in 4th grade. I wasn't a tv watcher, but I had a bedtime that was earlier than most of my friends. Anyway, we were in a group writing assignment--"our favorite tv show". The three other people in the group decided on Doogie Howser. I never even saw an episode and pretty much had to fake and nod the entire time we were working.

Reese will be pop culture relevant.

  • I feel super guilty that DS watches as much as he does (he's 2 next weekend wtf). He probably watches a few hours per week on average, long car trips being an exception.
I just hate the way he glazes over. And as a PP said, I worry about ADHD issues because DH has it.
