Swollen foot and ankle

Let me start by saying I know swelling in the feet and ankles is common in pregnancy, especially towards the end.  Let me also say that I spoke with the oncall midwife last night and will be bringing this up at my regular appointment this afternoon.

With all that being said I was just wondering if anyone has had swelling in just one foot and ankle.  On Tuesday I thought I noticed some swelling but it looked like both feet were the same.  I drank some extra water and tried to keep it up.  Last night you could clearly see my left foot and ankle was larger than the right.  I fell on Friday and tore up my left knee but there wasn't and still isn't any visible bruising at my knee or anywhere else on the leg.  Since Friday my calf and top of my foot are tightening up.

I know some of these signs could be a sign of a blood clot which is really bad.  But I was also told about six weeks ago I'm anemic so a blood clot seems unlikely.  The midwife gave me some other blood clot signs to look for, specific area in the calf that turns red, warm to the touch, etc.

Like I said I'm just wondering if anyone else had issues where one leg was more swollen.  I'm pretty accident prone (and always have been) but I've never had swelling set in four days after falling.

  • No advice here, but hoping they are able to figure it out at your appt today!

  • I am only swelling on my right foot/ankle, but I've just assumed it has to do with my ute pinching some nerve. I don't have soreness or rashes on my leg, so I've been assuming not a blood clot.  If you find out it is a big deal, let me know lol

  • I have swelling in both feet, but my right foot swells much more than the left. I asked my OB about it about a month ago, and she said it is probably how the baby is laying, which makes sense because LO hangs out consistently on my right side. Good luck, and I hope yours turns out to be something similar!

  • My left foot is the only one that swells at all. If your blood pressure is good and you don't have the rash or other signs of a clot it's totally normal. I read on another thread that it could just be from how your LO is sitting and putting pressure on one side versus the other. I'd review the other signs to look for with your OB this afternoon just so they're fresh in your mind.
  • I have the same issue, my left foot is huge compared to my right. My bp is good so I was told to drink lots of water and watch my salt. It hasn't changed anything though.
  • My left foot looks like something out of a cartoon and has since May. When I called they told me to watch out for other signs of clotting and sit down and put it up. No other signs of clotting this far, thankfully, but it still puffs up. For the most part, my right foot hasn't swollen up too much at all.

  • Thanks ladies!  Everything I read made it sound like swelling should be pretty even between the two feet and ankles during pregnancy.  My BP has been consistently good so fingers crossed this afternoon is the same.  With the fall I was getting nervous.

  • I had this in my last pregnancy and it turned out my blood pressure was a little elevated as well. It could be normal pregnancy swelling but it's good you are going to get it checked out regardless.

  • Both of mine swell but one is always way bigger. Hope it's nothing serious! Good luck!

  • This has been happening to me since around 25 weeks.  I have had swelling in both feet but 95% of the time, it's just in my left foot, ankle and calf.  I was sent to the ER early on to check for a clot and that was negative.  Doc just says that baby girl is blocking circulation to that leg.  I hope yours is nothing serious.
