    Speeshial Snowflake!!

My first name is the feminine version of my maternal grandfather's name.  He passed away when my mother was very young (2).  He also had seven children.  All of said children named a child after him.  While my FN isn't popular in the US, my state, or my city; it's extremely popular in my family.

My parents always knew that I would go by my middle name and they have called me that since birth.  I wish they had switched my first and middle when actually naming me.

Moral of story: Name your kid what you actually plan on calling them!

  • My name is Katelyn Joy which I think is beautiful. My mn came from a wonderful friend of my mothers and I love it and wish Joy was my first name. I have always gone by Katie though, and being called Katelyn feels strange and formal because it doesn't feel like my name. I like the name Katie, even though it's extremely popular among females my age (early 20s).

I am Abbey (with an E). I always wanted to be an Abigail growing up and even tried to go by that in second grade- but being a terrible speller and not knowing anyone with the name I spelled it Abbegayle and my mom told me "no" (thank god!)
My middle name is an uncommon family name- German yet feminine.
  • Name is Lisa Anne. Anne was my parental grandmothers name. I didn't go to school with many Lisa's but I knew a ton from Hebrew school and my Jewish youth group. Jews apparently love the name Lisa.

  • Its funny to me how many people wanted to have a common name as a kid. I am a Stephanie, but I was born at the end of its popularity so u rarely met any that were my age and I liked it that way. I didn't want anyone sharing my name lol
  • My parents were real boring and named me Jane. I appreciate that it's classic, & rarely misspelled. Growing up, I was always call Janey, which I absolutely despise. I like my name now, because I rarely meet others with my name, and if I do, they are usually old women. :-)
  • I love my name for me. It reflects both my heritage (Scottish) and my parents' hippiness (flower name.)  It is very trendy though, it reached it's peak at #3 the year I was born. In spite of that I never had others in my class until I went to college. There were 7 in my sorority.

What I don't like about my name is that because it was so trendy, there aren't a lot of famous smart women with the name. Instead it tended to be perceived as a name for blonde bimbos.

  • I would like my name, Patricia, except that there are too many nicknames that come from it. I live in a region where strangers seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to default to "Pat," which I loathe. I'm pretty rude in response, because in what universe is it okay to abbreviate a stranger's name for them?!?!

Because of this, I will never give a child a name with a common nn I don't like. OH is "Richard," so ...yeah, he feels the same.

My mom, the youngest of 4 sisters, was running out of names she liked by the time my sister and I were born. She was torn between Amanda* and Olivia for me and decided on the former, much to my dismay. My name is way to common and doesn't lend itself to any nicknames (except Mandy *shudder*). On the other hand, I've only needed to spell my name for people once or twice in my entire lifetime.

My name is sort of okay. I could have done better, could have done worse. I think I fared better than DH, though. He (and his brother) have the most humdrum white bread names ever.

*When my mom was discussing my name with an aunt of mine, my aunt responded, "You can name her Amanda. You don't live near the Amish". Apparently it's a popular name for Amish girls in the small town where my mom's family live and non-Amish families don't use it.

It's not so bad having a name that everybody recognizes and can spell and pronounce.

Yes to the above. I'm Lisa. It's tolerable, but really easy to guess how old I am. Elizabeth was an option my parents discussed, and I always wished they would have picked that.

  • I put SS. I love my legal name, but have gone exclusively by a nickname since I was a baby. No one ever calls me by my legal name, and the nickname sounds kind of immature/juvenile to me. It would feel weird to make people call me a different name now, though. (An example that's not my real name, someone named Margaret who goes by Peggy - names are different enough that it would be a big change to ask to be called full legal name)
  • I voted hate, but that is a bit strong.  It's more of a strong dislike.  I have grown to accept it, but I would prefer something longer and not unisex.

  • Growing up, I hated my name because no one could pronounce it and it got butchered.  I hated substitute teachers so much.

Now I like it.  It's slightly more common so it doesn't get mispronounced as much.

  • I love my name.  Everyone knew how to pronounce it and yet there was never another Brooke in the class.  I still only know a couple of Brooke's around my age :).

  • I don't hate it, but it's one of the top three names for my birth year, and my last name is also. Together, I hate them because it's so common and boring. The only benefit is both my names are always spelled correctly!

My names ok, but I find it very plain, especially since my last name is also pretty plain and my first name doesn't really have any nicknames.

My first name is Laura, it's ok but again no nicknames derive from it, except maybe Lo but that never came up for me. A friend of my sisters started calling me Lou as a nn since there aren't any and that was the closest thing she could think of I guess.

My middle name is Nicole (again pretty plain), my dad used that for a nickname. He either calls me Nic or Nicky (my mom hates it) I think sometimes I prefer Nic to Laura or I'll use Laura Nicole instead of Laura lastname because I like the sound of it better

Unfortunately because of my size (I'm a little vertically challenged, or fun sized as I like to say) I was always called "little one" or "itty bitty" (that one my BFF called me in high school). Luckily I had another nickname that my Papa gave me and called me all the time, Pearl (I would only respond to it for the longest time, my parents were a little comcerned when it came time to go to school that I would ignore my teachers when they called my actual name) which is far superior to all the others. My uncle also called me McGoof (don't know where it came from) but I obviously don't use that haha

Laura isn't very popular, I don't hear it very often, (although I did grow with 2 other Laura's) which is nice I guess. But it surprisingly gets misspelled or misheard a lot!! People either think it's Laurie or Lauren or gets misspelled as Lora. I do wish I had a different name, there's just many more beautiful names but I've had it this long and I don't think I could change a name my parents chose for me
  • I love my name, although it is somewhat common, Amber seems to fit me well. If it weren't my name, I'd consider it for my child. :-bd
  • I have always loved my name, Jenna. I have always gone by my full first name and dislike when it gets shortened. I have never been able to decide, however if it sounds juvenile (perhaps because it is more popular now and I am just about 30?)

My sister is Amber and I think we are a good sib-set and that my parents did a great job naming the both of us!

My name is Ashley.  It was obviously very popular growing up and I can remember asking my mom why she picked such a popular name for me.  She said she would have picked a different name if she'd realized how popular it was but that's life before the internet.

Honestly, though it doesn't really bother me.  It's not so bad having a name that everybody recognizes and can spell and pronounce.
I also have a very popular name that is easy to spell and pronounce and I appreciate that. I don't love it, but I like it. If I could name myself, I would be Julia.

@holdingThumbs I'm sorry you hate it. Interesting that so many other women w/the name I hate it too. Of course now I'm dying to know what it is.

I hate my name. It was a fine name until we moved to the US. Here, it is constantly, constantly misspelled and mispronounced. It's three letters, people. For example, today, I got the itinerary for my husband's company trip. I have been on four trips with them. They misspell my name on my ticket every freaking time and I have to have them correct it. This time, the secretary actually said "It would be so much easier if you just spelled it the normal way." No, because you also mispronounce my name to be the name you want it to be with the misspelling. Your "normal" way is a different name that isn't the one I was cursed with. And it's not a pretty name. It doesn't sound pretty at all.

My name is one letter away from being a totally different name and apparently that's the name everyone feels I should have. I also was teased with it. I hate it. HATE IT. I actually started the process to change it legally when I turned 18 but my mother cried so much I gave up.
