First name problems, which one to go with?

My SO and I are having problems deciding on a name. I had one that we both liked early on before we knew we were having a boy but now I'm not really liking it and I realized that he has two cousins with the same name
We came to an agreement on middle name so he's got that chosen. So now it's the fun of finding a first name and which spelling. Middle name is Alexavier

Welcome to N14! We're a really great group of gals and love clicky polls, but since you're not known around here you may notice that people are a bit wary of strangers. Maybe try lurking a bit to get a feel for the board, offer support to those who need it, participate in discussions and then post your question. You'll get much better results that way.

Alternatively, post on the baby name board, but TBH I don't think they would be huge fans of your name choices.

Please spell your child's name correctly. Misspellings aren't "cool". In fact, when your child is applying for jobs later in life, misspelled names will be judged as coming from a lower-class and/or uneducated family.

I voted for Zayden once I looked it up and found out it was a real name (haven't heard it before) but would have voted for Jackson if spelled with an "O." Garrett is cool too.

I'm not picky about people posting without introducing first but I can't help but wonder if these spellings are a joke? If not, I really hope technology has advanced significantly by the time this child enters the workforce-all I can think when I see crazy spellings is how annoyed id be trying to find this person in Outlook.

Names are like tattoos, they're with you for life. Make sure they're spelled correctly.

Eeek yeah, most of my picks for names were either hebrew or irish gaelic and i went for using the more difficult IG name as a middle name (but i um...spelled them correctly). I spent my whole life spelling my last name for people and can say it's annoying as hell. You don't have to choose common names, just spell your choices correctly or think about whether or not your kid will be made fun of. That's the best tip for choosing names, haha.

I'm sorry, those names are terrible and I'm not sure how to pronounce a few of them. Alexavier is just wrong.
Take it from someone who's name is spelled crazy, do not do any of that to your child.

Okay so maybe I'm 'new' here but sorry that I haven't posted in the November groups but I did have some input in July but lost my angel. And I'm sorry I didn't do an introductory post didn't really think it was super needed for name suggestions and yes I know that they are a bit out there but I don't want to have my kid have to look 5 times at people when they aren't even the one that people are trying to get the attention of.
Yeah my screen name is Klever isn't a first initial with part of my last name. I guess in a sense this was the worst place to look for name advice when almost every comment on here has been negative. I have to correct people with my name all the time and it's not even that uncommon. And I didn't know using alternative spellings to names was going to get this much heat...

It's your kid, though. If you don't want people's opinions don't ask for them.

I am sorry for your loss.

This is a great group of women should you choose to get to know us! People are entitled to their opinions and you asked! FWIW there is a baby name board on The Bump that deals with more random posts than the birth month board. Just don't expect them to like your name choices any more than this board.

I think because you're new here you just haven't had time to see the boards reaction to names before. Most people that are regulars are going to go against any names with "unique" spellings. And because we've been asked so many times what we think about misspelled names we are going tone quick to be sassy. But part of that sass really is because many of us have experienced different names (we have then, are teachers, are other sorts of professionals who encounter lots of names...) and are trying to make life easier for your son in the long run. So that may not be the crowd you want to pitch to. That being said, that's kinda what happens when you pitch names to strangers- you get the feed back they want to give, not necessarily the advice you're looking for.

The names that are here I've sen at least in a few other places so it's not like I pulled them out of no where or made them up myself. However due to the negativity it would be nice if people would stop commenting...If I could find the delete button I would do it because the excitement I had in sharing just went away completely.
I'd rather just have the post 'die' then get continuous notifications of people being negative

@Klever62‌ - Instead of getting mad & defensive that people don't like your names, take a step back and look at it more objectively: the reactions you are getting are what people will be thinking about you and your child.

You ASKED for feedback, and you got honest feedback.

I'd rather be forewarned when it's possible to change my mind, instead of having the name already on the birth certificate and being clueless to how it was being perceived by everyone else.

I truly can't get on board with any of these names. And I really tried. Just imagine how these names are going to look on a resume. That's what I have been keeping in mind as my husband and I explore names for our little boy. We want him to be successful, but also his own person, so his name has to truly 'fit' him. Good luck with your search.

I could barely understand any of this. Explains the name spellings. Alternative spellings are frankly freaking immature at best and they make you, your family, and your child look less intelligent than you are. Please do not. Life is not a Stephenie Meyer novel (no offense Twilight fans).

There are so many amazing lesser known names out there, you really don't need to make anything up out of your butt to have a unique name for your baby. You should search for lesser known names or maybe check out behind the name, it's a great resource.

I think this would be a good place to admit that DH seriously suggested naming our forthcoming baby girl Spike. He was dead serious. I gave him a death stare. He suggested it because of the character in the Tinkerbell movies. Next he suggested Spike's friend's name: Gliss. #-o [-X

Since then his name suggestions have all been reasonable.

@Klever62‌ the response you got here is likely indicative if the response your LO will get when he's out in the world.

Your opinion of the names is far more important than any of ours, but if you can't stand a little good-natured ribbing about his name, then you're probably not as set on these names either.

I think Garrett is cute, and I adore the names Alexander and Xavier, though I have never seen them mashed together like that.

If you choose to go with the others then I truly hope your LO has a big enough personality to deal with the constant name issues when he is older. Take this from a teacher who has seen the things teenagers do to their peers' names on a daily basis.

In the meanwhile, get to know these awesome ladies - I promise we're a lot more gentle than the baby names board!

@Klever62 I agree that you didn't make up most of the names you listed for us...but you DID make up the spelling. I'm all about unique names, but not names that are completely invented by the parents! Like many previous posters have said, you are the one to ultimately name your child; if you don't want opinions, don't ask.

I am a teacher and can tell you that if you go with one of those (besides Garrett) you little boy will be in for lots of confusion in elementary school....and will probably be affected more than being one of a few common names in a classroom.

I just wanted to point out in reaction to the bolded above... Jacksen sounds the same as Jackson, so when they are around other people and someone else's mom yells "Jackson" - all Jacksons spelled any possible way are going to respond. Making up spellings of a common name does not change this (since this seems to be your concern). 

Your child will have a much easier time spelling his name (and probably other words) if his name is phonetically correct. As a PP also stated, when  you have a yoonique misspelled name and are applying for jobs, most of the time the person named something spelled correctly/not made up (ie Michael) is going to come out on top. I may not have been the nicest in my first reply, but this is why. We don't want your child to be teased, less likely to get a job, etc because he has a made up name/spelling (and I assume you don't want to be the cause of that either). 

You can name your child whatever you want to, but I wouldn't expect people in real life to respond much differently to your names (other than Garrett) than we did.

If you think we're being mean and judging you, just wait until your little guy makes his debut. Even if the people you know won't say anything to your face, they will judge all of those names (except Garrett). The judging will continue into his adult life, and quite possibly make his life harder than it needs to be. YES, all of this can happen because of a name.

I'm confused. What exactly were you looking for when you asked for opinions, OP? Sorry you didn't get the rainbows and glitter you were seeking but this is actually a good place for name feedback. Because once you name your child something totally made up, these are the thoughts everyone that meets him for the rest of his life will think. Good news is you haven't signed the birth certificate yet.

Personally, I don't care what you name him or how you spell it. But if you don't like what you're hearing, please know it is the names fault.
