OB and IUD Rant

My IUD is currently floating somewhere in my uterus. OB had to confirm it was still in place via ultrasound at my last annual because the strings were not felt. So it's in my chart that it's AWOL. Shortly after my annual we decided to ttc and I made an appointment for removal, reminding them it was probably not going to be easy. Next available appt was 3 weeks later. So, appointment rolls around. Upon checking in, I asked if they had made arrangements for an ultrasound, or other guided IUD removal. Desk clerk says, yes, it's in your chart, so they've made arrangements. 45 minutes later, when the nurse practitioner finally comes in for the removal, there's no ultrasound or other assistance scheduled. She roots around, and of course can't locate it to remove it. Now I'm pretty irritated, but she says she will make sure I get an appointment with the doctor and u/s to get it removed asap. Today the office called to schedule the appointment...at the end of September. Ugh, seriously? Usually I love my OB-GYN practice, and have almost no problems scheduling for things, but this is crazy. I need to go set up my blanket fort and do some coloring until my blood pressure goes down.

Re: OB and IUD Rant

  • That sucks that you have to wait so long!!!. Mine did the opposite, it was expelled by my uterus and hanging halfway out and it caused me to have a massive infection in my cervix, so I had to told hold TTC for a few months after getting it removed.

  • How frustrating! My strings disappeared a few months ago and I also had to have an ultrasound to locate it. I am planning on having it out next month. This reminded me to make sure they are prepared for removal considering the challenges in locating it (thanks for the reminder).  Sorry to hear you won't have yours out as soon as you would have liked. Good luck!

  • Thanks for commiserating, lol. I am on the call list if an opening comes up, but I'm not hopeful that an appointment will magically be available at a time when my schedule is clear.

  • So you have a foreign object floating around your uterus that they can't find and they're making you wait another month? That would irritate the crap out of me and I'd be going semi bsc on them since this was their error in not following your chart. But I'm already cranky so maybe it's best not to piss off the people that will be fiddling around your uterus.

I threw a little hissy fit when they called to schedule the appt. But, since one of the the last times I actually saw my OB (not just the nurse practitioner) I broke down crying in the exam room because they wanted to schedule a c/s for my breech baby, (i really didn't want a c/s, lol) I should probably play it cool. Don't wanna end up on a 72hr psych hold ;)

  • How frustrating! I called my OB today and made an appointment for my annual pap, and also to have my iud removed. Because of insurance, they can't do my pap til the end of October, and it doesn't seem worth it to go in sooner to do the iud removal (we aren't ttc until January at the soonest). So I guess I'll wait. :/
