5 months pregnant and laid off, now what do we do?

We are five months pregant with our second child and my company is being bought out so I was laid off with 2 weeks severance.  We were all set up for maternity leave with short term disability throught the employer which ended when I was laid off.  My husband makes good money so we do not qualify for aid, however we need a bit more money after cutting as much as we can each month.  I will be applying for unemployment next week but am concerned about not being able to collect the unemployment for 6-8 weeks during and after I have the baby (c-section).  Does anyone know if Minnesota has something like California's temporary state disability coverage that would kick in during my time of not being able or available to work in order to collect the unemployment? Thank You

  • My friend had Same thing happen. I am certain she collected even after having the baby. Not sure if it was legal but she was applying for jobs and Actively looking and most companies it takes on average a month to bring someone on so even if she was hired right after having the baby she felt she could agree on a start date that would work, although it would not equal having 12 weeks Off. She had interviews up till she had the baby but of course no offers.

  • Also check with your employer and find out if they will allow you to keep the STD coverage if you pay out of pocket for it or maybe even call the company and see what they can do for you in terms of a policy.
