Food Allergy

Possible Food Allergy Question

My 7 month old daughter has previously been diagnosed with a dairy allergy. So as we have introduced solid foods, we have moved very slowly and I have been watching closely for reactions to other foods. The last two times my daughter has eaten those gerber puffs she has gotten a wicked diaper rash. The first time I thought it was peaches because I had intro'd the peaches at the same time as the puffs without even thinking about the fact that it was two new foods at once. I had assumed the peaches caused the reaction so I stopped peaches. However, last night she had puffs again and has a worse diaper rash than the first time. So, I'm thinking the puffs are causing the issue-would this be an allergic reaction? What would she be reacting to? Gluten? TIA

Re: Possible Food Allergy Question

  • If she has a dairy allergy, does she react similarly to soy protein? If so, there is soy lecithin in the Puffs (I believe).

Otherwise I would suspect either wheat or oats.

(Congrats on your LO's!! I remember you from my TTCAL days!)

  • I'm not sure. When I was nursing, her GI recommended starting with dairy elimination. We did that and she was better so I assumed dairy allergy. He did say that a lot of dairy allergic babies are also allergic to soy so when she was switched to formula we skipped soy and were put straight on nutramigen.

Now that I'm not nursing, how would I determine what the allergy is? (like soy vs wheat?). I know when I was researching dairy and soy allergies I found that soy is in like EVERYTHING!

(I remember you too!! Congrats on your LOs too! I didn't realize you had a 2nd one now!)

  • Thank you!

I also was on a total dairy/soy free diet as I was having issues with DD. I have just recently started eating dairy and soy again.

Honestly, it sucks, but the only way to know is to try feeding her something that is strictly soy or strictly wheat. You could try a standard wheat cereal for example.

I'm sorry. Allergies totally suck. I am really hoping DD doesn't have any but moving forwards with solids is proving to be quite stressful.

  • My first child couldn't eat puffs as he had a rice allergy.  My third child has a gluten allergy and can't eat them either.  It is hard to tell what the main ingredient is that is causing the problem without some allergy testing or more trial and error (which I don't recommend).
