TTC After a Loss

Miscarriage and 2 failed IUI's..discouraged

Hi everyone, I am new to this but was wondering if anyone has gone through something similar to us. We got pregnant the first time we tried, but then had a missed miscarriage 2 months in.. I had a D&C in April and since then I have not been able to ovulate on my own. I took Provera but that didn't work..so we went to Clomid and did an IUI and we didn't get pregnant, so we just did our second IUI with higher dose Clomid and we had 2 eggs and a lot of sperm and yet we didn't get pregnant. The doctor is saying we should try one more IUI and then move on to IVF. It is just very frustrating to me to be resorting to IVF when we didn't have any fertility issues 7 months ago. The doctor had no reason as to why I haven't been ovulating on my own since the D&C. We want a baby so bad and are still feeling bad about the first loss and I am feeling discouraged that the IUI's aren't working. I can't help feeling like I should be 7 months pregnant and it was so easy for us to get pregnant but now instead I am having IVF discussions and still have a long wait ahead of us..

Your body suffered a trauma when you had your D&C.  Not only do you need to wait until your HCG drops, but your body just needs time to heal. It is very common for women to not have a period in the 6 weeks post D&C. It seems like your doctor did not even allow that much time before putting you on a dose of progesterone to force your period to happen.  Again, your doctor did not let enough time to go by for you to ovulate on your own (you do not have to ovulate on or by CD14 - even if this was your normal pre-loss).

This is a good point too. After my loss, I was told to call if my period didn't show up in 6 weeks. It's completely normal to wait that long (and even longer for some women). If the timeline we're envisioning is accurate, it seems like your doctor is seriously rushing things and you need to find a new one.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.
As previous posters have said, a miscarriage is extremely traumatic, not just emotionally but physically. Most doctor's recommend waiting a couple cycles before TTC again. Also, it's very common not to ovulate "normally" or have "normal" periods for a while after the MC. I would definitely get a second opinion. Maybe this is just your body's way of telling you it's not quite ready? ((Hugs))

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Welcome, I hope you find comfort here.

Glad to hear that you plan on seeking a second opinion, that sounds like the right move.
  • Thanks everyone for your opinions! Buggirl your timeline is pretty close to accurate and BethKate I'm not sure why the doctor wanted us to start IUI's so quickly. He did some ultrasounds and saw that I was having LH surges but the follicles weren't maturing into eggs and said I should have been back to normal by that time so we should start the clomid to force ovulation. I did ask him if he felt like we should wait longer or do more testing but he said he didn't think so.. I will take all your good advice and get a second opinion. THANK YOU!
DEFINITLY get that second opinion! I am so shocked your doc gave you clomid and did IUI without a bunch of testing, let alone giving you a year to try on your own. Good luck!

  • I'm glad you're planning to seek a second opinion. I'd also suggest, as @buggirl72 mentioned, that you TTC on your own for a while and chart your basal body temperature to see if you're ovulating. It seems as though you've only actually TTC without assistance for one or two cycles. Give your body a chance to see what it's doing/not doing on its own.

    Good luck.

Yes, definitely get a second opinion. Something is not right with this course of treatment. Honestly, it sounds like the doctor is trying to make a profit. I am so sorry for your loss and your rough journey since then. Welcome to the board.

  • Wow! Glad the ladies convinced you to get a second opinion. IUIs and IVF should be considered only after a year of ttc and unable to get pg or a known issue that has a established history- and then only after all infertility testing is done. A LH issue *just* after a m/c is almst to be expected which is why often people are told not to ttc for one to three cycles after... to give your body a chance to stablize after a trauma.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss.  The other women have given you great advice and I hope you run (not walk) away from this doctor.  Give your body sometime to heal and figure things out on it's own before seeking any more intervention.  I know how frustrating it is to not have it happen every month, but that doesn't mean any assistance is needed.  Only seek help if you've been trying for a year, or if you aren't seeing clear BBT shifts every month.
