Cloth Diapering

rash :-(

Hello ladies, looking for some imput. I have a 4 week old who has been in cloth for about 2 weeks now. Today when I went to change him in the afternoon he has a really REALLY angry rash along his tummy, where the top of the diaper would be (he was in a prefold/cover)

Hes miserable, so Im giving in for now and DH is bringing a package of Pampers so I can slather him in barrier cream, but I am concerned as to how this showed up all the sudden, and was just so red so fast.

He was in his swing napping, and woke up and may have wiggled the strap against his belly while he fussed until I got him out - and he was absolutely soaked when I got him that time. Could it just be chafing? He wasnt in the swing struggling for a really long time, so it seems strange...

Also, being new, Im still tinkering with my wash routine and just tried a significantly bigger scoop of Tide, although I think my musty smell is coming from a dryer I need to clean and not necessarily the diapers... again, troubleshooting.

Any ideas would be helpful, I hate to see him hurting, poor little man. Thanks!

  • How much is a "bigger scoop" of tide? What is your wash routine?

  • Its possible but weve used the swing since the beginning and this is the first time Ive seen this rash. He was only in the swing a minute or two before I got him.

Okay so so far, Ive been washing every 3 days. I do an express wash with extra rinse, warm/cold no detergent. Then I do a normal wash, cold/cold and hit the extra rinse and soak buttons. This time I filled the scoop to the lowest load line, before I tried half that and out of the dryer it just smells so musty, and often are still damp. But other clothes are smelling that way too so I plan on cleaning both machines and seeing if that helps. To do that I need to get the baby to sleep without me holding him... easier said than done. But any suggestions on making this better are appreciated too.

  • Normally every 2-3 hours. He gets changed when he wants to eat. That particular diaper was probably closer to 3 since he was actually napping.
  • This content has been removed.
  • I would definitely change more frequently. Like every hour and a half, 2 hours at the most at that age.

  • I bought a bunch of different kinds of diapers and cant remember which, but one said it didnt matter if it was warm or hot so I went with warm. Wish I knew where I read it. From that I figured it didnt matter all that much between the two.
  • Also, you should grab some CD safe creams. We have CJ's for a barrier cream and Grandma El's for when we need something a little stronger. There are lots of other suggestions around here too. Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • We use CJs, but not up by his belly button. Do you normally put it all over the entire area the diaper covers? I was only putting it in his bum area.

And yes, I was backward, I thought hot/warm for the cycle with no detergent, cold with detergent. When you guys said something I checked and sho nuff, its the other way around. So yes, I can fix that.
  • I don't use cream at every change. Only ON for an extra barrier.
