Are you allowed if you are induced?

I found out i am going in the night before my induction in the morning for cervadil. Can I eat at the hospital before I go to bed with the cervadil? Also, after the pitocin is started, will I be able to eat! Or is that I am not allowed to eat after the epideral? In other words, I wonder when I can eat. Or maybe they just keep you on ice chips in case it turns into c-section? Anyone experience this or in the same boat? Thanks, HBP!

  • I wasn't induced, but was told not to eat before coming in for L&D. I had already eaten a little oatmeal, and threw it all up. So remember that whatever you eat you may see again.

  • I have a 7am appt to be induced next Wednesday and my instructions say not to eat OR drink after midnight :( I'm sure they will give me ice chips but I'm planning on being on an empty belly for a long time!
  • Currently on pitocin since 2:30 pm yesterday. They allowed me clear liquids this morning and it was the best meal ever... yumm chicken broth!

  • When I was induced the nurses told me I couldn't eat.  Then my OB came in and overruled them and told me to eat.  I was induced at 1pm and didn't have DS1 until 5pm the following day so I'm very glad I ate.  And I ended up with a c/s.

  • Eat like you are about to run a marathon before.... but then don't expect to eat for... well, a long time possibly.

This. Bring in some things in your hospital bag in case you get hungry (they can't force you to fast, just keep in mind if you do eat something it may come back up, especially during transition). A lot of women won't want to eat during labor anyways (I didn't, but my labor was short), but honey sticks (like you stir into your tea at coffee shops) can be a good option for upping your energy levels if you feel you need it. It's kind of ridiculous to do so much work and not be allowed to fuel if you want to, IMO.

I brought a box of Luna bars last time that I DEVOURED during my hospital stay last time, because I delivered late and the cafeteria was closed. I'm bringing more this time, they were so handy post delivery as I was hungrier than I had been in my entire life!

  • I ate, it's up to your provider, my midwife encouraged me to eat to keep my energy up, when I got into really active labor I didn't want to eat, and I did throw up twice...but if I hadn't of eaten something i don't know if I would have had the energy to push for 4 hours...plus my induction process lasted almost 50hrs.

  • When I was induced last time, I was supposed to eat before I came in, but I was too nervous. I was afraid that my second delivery would be like my first (it wasn't!) so I couldn't eat. Then at lunch, I was in pretty hard labor and not hungry. E was born at just after 8pm, and it was like instantly I was ravenous. DS had some trouble breathing right away and we were swarmed by a constant flow of people for about 3 hours after delivery. DH didn't get to leave to pick up food for us until then (around midnight by the time he got back). Best pizza in the world! Lol

  • I had the same exact thing as you the first time. I was not allowed to eat once I got to the hospital. But they told me that ahead of time. They told me eat my last meal before I came in. I had to be there at 5pm.

I didn't care about food, the pain and vomiting took care if that. I was just thirsty. But I couldn't have anything until I was back in my room, (after emergency c-section). And then, I could only have water and broth!!!

  • I was told to eat before with both my other two... With my daughter I was allowed small light things during labor to keep up energy and blood sugar. I got white grape jello, sprite, saltines... Things like that. It really helped (compared to my labor with my son where I got nothing once admitted) and I plan on asking for the same again

  • our hospital policy was that you couldn't eat anything except liquids once you were admitted.  18 hours and 3 hours of pushing later and I was famished!

  • I was induced at 0 cm. We went in at 7:30 am. They gave me breakfast and lunch. Once they broke my water then they asked that I not eat anymore.
I doubt they would have stopped me if I wanted to, but they wouldn't provide solid food any more.

  • I'm going in at 8 am and my ob told me to make sure I eat a good breakfast before coming in.
