"we've created a campaign all about spreading the word that breastfeeding doesn't suck"
really ground breaking, world changing stuff there, bump. the doesn't suck part is really rubbing me the wrong way for some reason.

Yeah, this whole campaign is very insensitive. There are a LOT of women on this site who chose to not breast feed for whatever reason. Should TB really point out to them that they think that was not a good decision?
8. It saves lives -- and government money! If just 90% of US mamas breastfed exclusively for 6 months, not only would an estimated 900 babies live, but the United States would save $13 billion per year. (Yep, $13 BILLION.)

I'm guessing that stat is going to have something to do with WIC or other formula assistance type programs but I agree I would like to know the source for the stat.

And if so...eww. That has all sorts of connotations; all of which give me the icks.

1. You'll feel far less crazy (we promise!) A study of postpartum mamas found that those who breastfed their babies showed far less anxiety and more mutuality at one month postpartum than those who didn't.
2. It lowers the risk of childhood cancers One study found the risk of childhood cancer in formula-fed children was 2-8 times that of long-term breastfed children. The risk for short-term formula feeders was 1-9 times that of long-term breast feeders.
3. ...And breast cancer in mamas! Get this: If women who breast fed for less than 3 months were to stick it out for 4 to 12 months, breast cancer among parous premenopausal women could be reduce by 11%. And if they stayed with it for 24 months or longer, those risks could be reduced by nearly 25%.
4. Smart kids rule Studies show that breastfed babies have significantly higher IQs by 8 years old than babies who didn't breastfeed -- even after adjusting the stats for differences between groups and Mom's educational and social class.
5. You could save on braces The longer you breastfeed, the lower the liklihood that baby will suffer from malocclusion -- aka a fancy word for misalignment of the teeth and dental arches.
6. It cuts down on childhood obesity Breastfeeding has long been tied with reducing the rate of childhood obesity, regardless of Mom's diabetes or weight status.
7. Allergies and ailments are no biggie Respiratory wheezing, influenza, diarrhea, allergies, and eczema are way less common in breastfed babies -- think about all those trips to the doc you won't have to make!

9. Oh, and it'll save you a ton of cash, too Believe it or not, formula supplies for just six months can cost upwards of $1,000.
10. You'll fit into your skinny jeans faster! Breastfeeding burns an average of 500 calories a day. Yes, really. Need we say more?

Yeah exactly. Just another way TB shows us how out of touch with reality they are.

didn't she say a while back that we all need to stop perpetuating mommy wars? How does this NOT start wars between women when that list is basically saying all formula feeders are wasting tax payer dollars and slowly killing our kids?
:-q
Because Boppy is paying them good money to fuel this war. I am willing to bet there won't be a Cloth Diapering Month on TB.
Here is the 10 reasons you suck if you formula feed (according to TB)
You'll have PPA/PPD and be "crazy"
You're baby will get cancer from the icky poison you feed it
You'll get cancer!
Your baby will never be as smart as the BF babies
Your baby will need headgear and therefore not be pretty
Your baby will be fat because of the sugary/fatty crap you put in his bottle
Your baby will constantly be sick and allergic to everything under the sun
You are a giant leech on society with need your needing aid to pay for your gross formula and your doctor bills from your sick baby and your "crazy" self
You are poor and that is the worst
You'll never lose the baby weight and therefore be fat forever!
**please note this is TIC and I personally do not hold these feeling**

That whole list is heinous. But what do I get since they promise me that BFing will make me less crazy. Cause I most certainly still got PPA. AND THEY PROMISED.

Hmm, I guess I'm the opposite of these statistics. I FF DD and BF DS. I had PPD after DS, DS had a speech delay where DD is very smart for her age, and I lost the weight after DD, but not after DS.
I am all for breastfeeding, don't get me wrong, and I think education about it important. Their wording just sounds so stupid and judgmental, and even juvenile, that it is making me angry.
I was so intent on breastfeeding because of the insane amount of pressure and guilt that I was feeling from all fronts that I basically starved my child and he ended up in the hospital for three days.
I'm 2.5 years out from it and I still have insane amounts of guilt on all fronts.
@BumpJackie, I will implore you take this to your creative board.
I would ask that you take a more reflective look at the wording of this list. Are you truly comfortable with the implications and language, particularly #1. Is the term 'crazy' the best word to use here? Perhaps Roget could offer a less offensive and stigmatic word?
I understand that your goal is ad dollars and that is what Boppy is providing. But your editorial and creative board so be a little more...cognizant...of language and its effects.
I wasn't going to get personal with anecdotes but here goes.
::deep breath::
If we want to get technical, the guilt surrounding Breast Is Best exacerbated my PPD. My child became a chore that I hated. I would hear him cry and think "gawd, again?!" I forced myself to "stick with it" because of shit like this. I had to make it work. Surely all I had to do was try harder and push through.
My husband, seeing how miserable and spiraling I had become stepped in to help. Without his encouragement and support to stop the guilt, I fear what would have happened. I had to sit my child down and walk away too many times for it to be normal.
I am all in favor for encouraging breastfeeding. But at some point, sometime breast isn't best.
I am not personally hurt by this. I almost didn't share my story but thought what the hell. My story was shared so that it can be a comfort to someone else struggling. This was 4 years ago and I have come to terms with my decisions as a mother.
I am willing to bet that Boppy wrote it and TB plopped it on there without even reading it.
