New crib mattress for 3rd baby?

So I had 2 under 2 and 2 crib mattress at one point. I got rid of the one I used for my daughter 6 yrs ago but I still have one that I used for my son. I checked the manufactor date it says 7/20/2010. So what do you think. Ok to use or get a new one? Also not sure if this matters but it's made with organic cotton. Thanks!

Re: New crib mattress for 3rd baby?

  • I plan on using ours from my 3.5 year old. We are moving her into a twin bed this weekend. It has held up really well so I didn't think anything of it. But if someone knows something I don't, please enlighten me!

  • We are planning to reuse ours, which we bought in 2010 for our son.  I would think the guidelines for crib mattresses would be the same as regular mattresses in terms of when to replace, but I'm not entirely sure.

  • Take this for what it's worth, but Baby Bargains recommends replacing crib mattresses for every child...I'm going by memory here, but I believe the concern was both deterioration that would cause sagging and the possible presence of mold, which may be linked to SIDS. The mold concern was especially high in the non-waterproof cotton mattresses.

Again, parents' choice, but just throwing out the opposing perspective.

  • I never even thought about a mattress having an expiration date...

This is the third baby for us too, but DS1 is only (almost) 4. We're buying a new mattress just because I noticed the plastic (? whatever the waterproof outer layer is) is starting to crack. DS2 just stopped sleeping in it a few nights ago, so it's been used almost every night for the past 4 years. I figure it's time for a new one anyway.

  • The only reason we are buying a new one is because DS(2.5) is still using it in his toddler bed.
  • I would think that if the mattress is still sturdy and in good condition it's fine. I would worry if it was ripped or if it was overly worn that it was no longer firm.
