I also have experience having a different name than my own children since I graduated school and my professional license/practice was already under my maiden name. I had to get IDs made for my first two children when I took them to the doctor and for daycare since our last names did not match. It was a complete headache. I ended up switching to my married name 7 years later because I could not imagine dealing with that kind of stuff all through the school years. It was a hassle but worth it to me.
However, your SO will have the same problems if baby has your last name.
Ugh. That's discouraging to here because I kept my maiden name when we got married and our kids will have my husband's last name. I thought it would be easier since different names are more common these days.
It just depends on your personal circumstances. We were at a military installation that required us to check in to pediatric appointments with our own ID. Since my last name was not the same as the children we had confusion each time as they could not pull up our kids records with my SS#. They even refused to see them at one point unless DH was there. . At the time, DH and I were both providers in the same clinic so the confusion of paging Dr Same Name several times a day would have been worse, IMO. We now have the same name but work separately.
@PeaceofKia I pronounced in my head your second boys name like prison. I'm not sure what you are going for but I would reconsider the spelling to be more phonetic since it is not a traditional name.
My sister was in that boat too. She used her last name as a 2nd middle name and used her (now ex) boyfriends last name as her babies... Honestly she wishes she just used her last name for the last name.
Love family names! If our twins are boys they will be Christopher Gattis (Christopher is dh's first name as well). And James Gable (James is dh's grandfather) For girls we've chosen Scarlet Elise and Emery Lorraine (Lorraine is my mom's middle name)
DH and I rarely see eye to eye on names, but DS was named after his late grandfather, so I think I get a bit more pull this second time around. For a boy I am leaning toward Henry. I love the name and it honours an angel baby from my BMB. DH is coming around. We are less certain of girl names. We are thinking of Kennedy (a long time favourite but I'm getting tired of it), Zoey, or Josephine. The lists aren't closed yet.
Miscarriage in January 2012 at 8 weeks
Subsequently diagnosed with low P4, LOR. MH DX low motility, varicocele
BFP in July 2012 (Gonal-f + trigger + IUI#2 (B2B) + prometrium)
Lost Baby A prior to 7 weeks; large SCH; Baby B (Bug) was born in March 2013
I am unmarried, and although I like my boyfriend's last name, I am wondering if I should give the baby my last name? Not really crazy on hyphenated. What do I do? I don't want to offend him, or his family, but I want to explore all my options.
If you want to give the baby your name then give it your name. DD has my maiden last name because her bio dad didn't want to sign her birth certificate papers when she was born. I don't regret ever giving her my last name. Do what you feel is best. Its a lot easier when LO has your last name anyways.

Dang I have not even really thought about names since the last time I was pregnant. I do have some girl names we were thinking of last time. Zoe, Payton, and Tegan. Kind of waiting to see if its a boy or a girl to get really serious
We made a solid final decision last night on names, and aren't planning on telling MY family until baby is born. I'm avoiding the rude comments and the fact that I don't want their opinions on names anyway.
BUT, I don't mind sharing with you lovely ladies.
Willow Elizabeth for a girl Wyatt Hendrix for a boy

Tegan is my nieces name but they spelled it Teagan. I can't remember which middle name she got thought it was either Harlow or Fallon. I always mix up the twins middle names.
How are you planning on pronouncing Zoe? Like Zoey?

Tegan (Teagan) is one of our top choices if this baby is a girl, too! Love it!

Zoey and I really like the way you spelt Teagan better
Yeah when my BIL and SIL came out with the names they picked for the twins everyone through a fit and hated them.

Thats just the way my inlaws are. When I mentioned we picked Daniel to call him Danny for short if LO is a boy they start telling me oh well I had a cousin named Danni that committed suicide oh and I had a cousin named danny who went to prison.
Neither of these cousins on my MIL and FIL side had we ever heard of until we mentioned calling it Danny for short. Then they where like I don't like that.
Hmmm I don't remember asking for your opinion after you asked what we picked.

My husband has had the name Serenity Jade chosen for a girl for a really long time. We would call her Jade, which I LOVE.
And for now, we both really like the name Corbin Dallas. Im probably going to change my mind at some point, but we've kinda been stuck on them for a while so I guess we'll have to wait and see!
We have decided Ada Grace for a girl. We have a list of about 15 boy names that we can't agree on. We are team green so we have a while to decided on a boy name.
Both of our grandfathers have the exact same name. Exact. Like: Richard Charles Dean. Richard Dean OurLastName. (Names have been altered slightly to throw off internet creepers.) Anyway, that sort of decided the boys name for us. :-) He will be named after our grandfathers.
If it is a girl, we like really old fashioned names, but I refuse to type them because I have already heard bumpies disparage them on the names board and I love them too much to hear them abused. :-)
Are any 2nd, 3rd+ time moms looking for some sort of symmetry when naming the new baby? Not rhyming necessarily or with a shared initial, just something that fits. I don't know how to better describe it.
DD has an old-fashioned first name, which shares a first initial with DH's first name. I want nubaby to have a classic/old fashioned name as well, but it must start with the same first initial as my name.
Also, word to the wise - people are lazy as hell, so if you give you child a long name, they will do everything in their power to nickname your kiddo, whether you want them to or not. There is absolutely no subtle way to get them not to. If you want your daughter to be called Charlotte and not Charlie or Robert and not Bobby, you have to fully confront people and say so. To this day I am still fighting with relatives about using DD's full name and not a shortened version that I don't like.
If anyone's interested, my husband was reading up on pregnancy symptoms (he totally just does it to win brownie points so I'll put out) and he said he thinks Areola is a pretty name.
So that's up for grabs...
From a person whose parent did this to her, don't pick a middle name that starts with a vowel. A PP talk about MLF as initials believe me it is worse when your initials form an actual word. When initialing things I only use first and last, otherwise I get strange looks.

My sister worked for an outreach clinic in a rural area and took care of a baby girl named Meconium....the mom mentioned she heard the doctor say that while she was in labor and thought it was the most beautiful word. Poor kid.

I love everything about those names! Is you hubby a nerd by any chance? Because it would make total sense. I'm a little jealous for not thinking of Corbin Dallas myself. Awesome!
DH and I had many named picked out, as well as the order we would use them in, while we were dating. If 2.0 is a girl, she will be Madilynn Hope. The Lynn part comes in from my middle name. Hope is because DH's mother is a breast cancer survivor. So, it's a way to celebrate her. If this baby is a boy, he will be Cash Andrew (DH's middle name).

BF's family has a tradition of giving little girls two middle names so we will be sticking with that. Other than that we have three girls names and three boys names picked out. Girls: Harper Lynn Grace Presley Lynn Marie Rhyan Aria Lynn (Lynn is after BF's mom and Marie is after my mom)
@foxslaw our children will have my maiden name as their last name. My husband is totally on board and proud of the decision. We feel it is the correct first step in raising them to respect women in a world that devalues women in countless ways (naming being one of them). Much social policy and politics depict the work that women put into creating life as a burden on society rather than the actual necessary life source of society that it is. As a highly educated woman (with a highly educated husband) we are committed to teaching our children these things, even if it means dealing with frustration, awkwardness, and ignorance because, frankly, we know making a better world for them to live in starts with us!
That said, I would never judge someone for naming their child after their SO's family. I'm not about forcing my politics on others.

I have no idea for this baby...our "style" seems to be unpronounceable Irish names with only one consonant, so I'm at a loss for this baby. DS is Eoin Peadar, DD1 is Aoife Rose, and DD2 is Aine Maeve. Even our dog is Mia (one consonant, even though she came with her name). I like Zoe, but DH said it's not Irish and vetoed it. To be fair, I vetoed his Ruairi (Rory). I'll wait until we find out the gender to fight my name battles!
