6 week Sonogram, Gestational Sac Visible but No Fetal POLE?!?

Hello beautiful ladies! I found out I was pregnant on July 12th using an HPT. At the time I had not yet missed my period but ClearBlue stated Pregnant 1-2 weeks. On July 15th I met with my OBGYN but she was unable to see anything with the Sonogram and asked me to return in 2 weeks. I returned Yesterday July 29th for my second Sonogram and was told they were able to now see the gestational sac but no fetal pole and now I have to return again in 2 weeks for a third Sonogram. Is this normal? Based on my last period June 17th, I should be at exactly 6 weeks now, but of course this may be off. I know its normal not to see a fetal pole this early but I guess the lack of concern and information from my OBGYN is what's making me more concerned. She has NOT done a blood or urine test at all to check my HCG levels. I actually took another Clear Blue last Thursday 24-July just to see if my levels have gone up and showed Pregnant 3+. Should I be concerned that my doctor is not being proactive? Furthermore, is it normal to not see a fetal pole this early on? I am a newlywed and this is my first pregnancy ever. I am extremely worried that something will go wrong. Any input or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Worried Prego Girl

Re: 6 week Sonogram, Gestational Sac Visible but No Fetal POLE?!?

  • My daughter had an us at 6 weeks and all they could see was a gestational sac and a yolk sac, her OBGYN said it was too early to see anything else, see went back at 8 weeks and a baby and a heartbeat were there.

  • Thanks for your replies. @Summergirl1211 , what I meant to say was that I've read this is normal but wanted to know if anyone from experience could confirm this. My apologies for not being clear. My worries are affecting my ability to write clearly.

@honeybee55T thanks for your response. Hopefully this is the case for me.
  • Hey there!  I am 6w 2d pregnant, so we must be due around the same time!  I actually had an US on Monday (started bleeding on Monday, so my OB wanted me to come in and have an US).  On my US it also only showed the gestational sac but no fetal pole.  Different doctors have different views on when you should be able to detect a fetal pole... the nurse practitioner I saw on Monday told me that by 6 weeks you should detect one, however, I remember with my DD we had an ultrasound around 6 weeks and didn't see anything so we had to go back around 8 weeks. Every pregnancy is different, I wish there was concrete info to give to help you not worry.  Here's to hoping we both get positive US results on our next visits :)

Same happened to me, I was worried about not seeing fetal pole beginning of 6 weeks, it was there at end of 6 weeks. You need a new Dr or request the bloodtest

  • She sent you for an ultrasound too early. Mine did the same, but I was on the pill so didn't know doc or lmp. I must have only been 4 weeks at my first u/s (3 days after my BFP), 2 weeks later I measured 5w6d and really only saw the yolk sac, and a week later finally saw baby and a heartbeat. I know it's hard but try to be patient. Good luck!

At my first ultrasound, according to my LMP I was over 6 weeks, but  measured 5 weeks, 6 days and baby had a heartbeat. You could have just ovulated later than you think and will be fine at the next ultrasound.
