TMI post baby body issues - hemorrhoids

Who else is dealing with these/has dealt with these? I had them with my first two right after birth but they went away shortly within a week or so from what I remember. And they darn well didn't hurt every second - maybe just when going number two. This time I swear they hurt every second and going number two is a whole other ball game.

Been using preparation h suppositories (yuk) and crossing fingers they'll go away like before. Any body else had them this bad and was able to make them go away quickly or at all? If so, how? All I had to use to handle them the previous two times was tucks. Those aren't cutting it this time. The prep h suppositories are helping but I'm nervous they won't make them go away!

Re: TMI post baby body issues - hemorrhoids

  • I had them for the first time after this delivery (#3) and holy hell did they ever hurt! Constant also, not just when I had a bm. I was on constant advil/Tylenol, and used Tucks & preparation H, and they pretty much went away after a week or so. I hope they go away on their own for you, cause man, I feel your pain. Sucks to deal with, on top of delivery & caring for a newborn (when all you can think about is how much your a$$ hurts)!!
GL. If they don't get better o their own definitely go see your GP. I was close, but like I said the problem resolved itself, thank God.

  • Following because I'm 7 weeks PP and they still haven't gone away. I asked my OB about it at my 6 week appt but she didn't check them out, just gave me instructions to keep using the wipes and high fiber diet. I'm wondering at what point do I call her to get it checked. I don't have a GP because I moved right before getting pregnant so didn't bother finding a new one when I was seeing my OB regularly.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Bummer to hear about those whose haven't gone away. Maybe we'll all find some more answers here.
  • Soak in a really warm bath.

Will the 1% hydrocortisone cream eventually shrink the external ones, or do I need a script for something else? My only regret About attempting a VBAC is what it did to my bum.

  • A hot bath or applying a hot washcloth always works better for me than cold, I think the heat helps break down the clots and helps them drain. Do it as often as possible for a few days and I bet you will notice a difference!

Mine (external) have always gone away within 8 days.
I don't think the hydrocortisone cream helps them go away, it just helps you be more comfortable while they shrink on their own. Mine is 2.5% hydrocortisone and 3% lidocaine (prescription)

The best relief I get is from taking a warm bath and positioning them internally (so gross I just admitted that).

I didn't know that was possible, but I'm totally going to try it. My OB gave me a script for the 2.5% cream during my incision check yesterday. She seemed to think it would help shrink them.

I don't need them to go away entirely - just get small enough (back to their normal slightly protruding size) - so that I can wear my thongs again. I'm still in the mesh hospital panties because they are the only thing I own that doesn't rub them. I'm going to be annoyed if I need to go buy all new undies.

    Ha!!!

I hate to break this to you, but I haven't been able to wear thongs since 2003.

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies. @ghostof5letters‌ thanks for admitting that. I've always been able to position mine internally (you put that so delicately) but haven't been able to with this one. Warm bath tomorrow, here I come.

Seriously?! No thongs?! That sounds nightmarish. I'm getting that sucker zapped or something if that's the case. Off to do more research on how to get rid of this.
  • Mine were really bad (I was admitted to hospital & had to have C-section because LO was causing so much pressure there so they kept getting worse). Called the OB initially & they said to continue home treatment. Had to call back the next day after I was up all night sobbing from the pain & they finally agreed to see me - didn't believe how severe it was til they saw it. I basically had a purple racquetball between my buttcheeks - my OB said they had their own zip code.

Treatments they gave me that have helped tremendously:

Lidocaine 5% (hydrocortisone cream only relieves the itching - lidocaine actually helps with the pain/swelling. When I was so swollen that ice packs hurt, lidocaine stung when initially applied but then gave me some relief).

Proctofoam 1% - also a Godsend but they don't prescribe it at the hospital I delivered at. Got a prescription from OB upon discharge but unfortunately I had to pay full price as my insurance doesn't cover it ($150 for 2 weeks worth). You can apply this both externally & internally with the included applicator. I truly believe between this & the lidocaine (& removing baby girl) has made all the difference.

Warm sitz bath - also helps with cleaning the area as well as soothing the pain

Tucks after every visit to the toilet - I was using them before as part of my home treatment but they just weren't enough in my case to help with baby girl still in utero.

I also am taking a lot of laxatives to soften stool - Miralax, Colace & Senekot since a bad constipated BM is what really caused mine to flare up this bad. I'm finally easing off some of these so I don't have to suddenly rush to the bathroom. Part of this is also because the pain meds due to my C-section cause constipation.

I'm almost 2 weeks post-partum & the buggers have finally gone down to a manageable size (more like what I had 2nd trimester, which was much more responsive to home treatment). So thankful I can sit, walk, sleep, actually move without sobbing like a human being again. I am having a follow-up appointment this week with the colorectal specialist I saw at the hospital (there was a possibility of having surgery) to see where I'm at & what the next steps are - hopefully an outpatient procedure if anything.

Be persistent with your docs if the problem isn't going away before it gets worse. I hope all you ladies experiencing these PITAs find relief & healing!

  • One other thing that has helped: my husband went to Target and bought me an inflatable donut to sit on while feeding my son. It takes the pressure off the hemorrhoids and the area where I tore during childbirth. He found it in the pharmacy section and had to ask because they keep them behind the counter. I'm finally back to where I was during second tri. Slowly but surely shrinking to a manageable size.

In the hospital, they gave me a "waffle pad" for the same concept. Definitely had to take it with me everywhere the first 1-1 1/2 weeks in order to sit semi-comfortably. I still take it with me to sit in the car - lessens the impact from surprise bumps on the road.
