TTC after 35

Had my HSG today... R side is blocked

Hi everyone,

I had my HSG today and my right fallopian tube is blocked, close to the connection to the uterus.  The doc tried to unblock it but it didn't work.  He said it is usually dried mucus.  The other tube on the left was fine and open. And the uterus looked good he said.

For those of you at home, here is what I know now:
- 6 months NTNP
- 6 months good timing, no BFP
- eggs reserve looks great
- 1.8 cm endometriosis on right ovary (I am not sure if there are other spots)
- Last month I ovulated on the right side
- Baseline bloodwork on CD2 normal
- Bloodwork at my physical normal

I'm going on Tuesday with my DH to the RE to get genetic testing (on both of us), his spermies results, and for a saline sonogram.  And we have 30 minutes for discussion about it all.

I am really glad I went in and got started with the RE.  It all happened so fast.  I was just thinking about it and mentioned to my coworker and she gave me her guy's number, I called and they had an appointment within a week.  That was about 3 weeks ago.  And now I'm so relieved that my eggs are good, and now huh... the tube blockage.  I was thinking it would be OK and open but this is a surprise.  I guess from what I read on the googles that some people have surgery to open it, but the scar tissue can grow back.  And hopefully the next month I'll O on my left and get a BFP.

You ladies mean a lot to me and I'm glad to be able to share these details.  Has anyone else had blocked tubes? Tell me stories!

XO

TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
Seriously considering IVF in March/April
12/17/14 - Natural BFP!

And for me, it was not that painful at all. I was really nervous but, after having 45 minutes of my gyno digging for my broken IUD last year, this was nothing!!

  • What a lucky referral from your coworker and mostly reassuring news from the RE. I'm not aware of having blocked tubes but it sounds like it's not terribly uncommon and still totally possible to conceive. It feels good to be taking action toward TTC. FX for you and your DH!

  • I'm sorry about the blocked tube, but it's kind of nice to have a simple, relatively benign reason for why things might be taking longer. Go lefty!

  • Yes, knowing seems like it would help with your decisions on progression.  Best wishes!

  • I have never had a blocked tube, but I just wanted to say I am glad you got some answers and hope you get a BFP shortly!
  • With the possibility of endo on your right ovary, I wouldn't be surprised if your right tube is blocked by endo scar tissue. My tube was blocked by endo. It was easily opened with pushing dye into when I was under general anesthesia during a laparoscopic surgery. I would think a surgery would be your next course of action since you have a blocked tube and suspected endo.

Some people are able to get pregnant following removal of endo.

I was not one of them. I needed IVF to overcome my endo issues. I suspect that my tubes just aren't that functional even though they are clear and or my body is making the environment hostile to sperm survival. In any case I was lucky enough to have IVF work the very first time. For people like me, iui would have been a waste if money... Something to consider if you get to that point.

Good luck moving forward. I hope you don't need IVF like I did.

  • amandaleigh1 thanks for the experience story. That is also what the RE said when I went in on Tuesday, that the R tube was blocked highly likely from endo, and that even though the left is open from HSG showing, it might still be hostile. He said he could do lapro surgery and that I could take a few more months trying naturally if I wanted (i don't want to do surgery just yet) so I'm thinking November I'll do the lapro if I'm not pregnant yet by then. And yea, no IUI if we need to get more help - straight to IVF.  How was that for you?  The IVF?

  • @radiantly even though I didn't conceive on my own I am glad I had the lap for symptom reduction of my endo, and a lap is all it takes for some people to get pregnant so it is worth a shot.

My IVF was uneventful and good- in spite of only having 10 eggs retrieved and having only 6 fertilize, I transferred one of those 6 and had my DS. I have 3 others frozen from that cycle (1 good, 2 fair). I hope to try in October with 1 of those. I am hopeful to get a sibling from the same IVF that gave me DS. Otherwise it will be nothing or a fresh IVF at age 40-41.
