GTKY: Secret Codes

Did you ever have any secret codes or languages when you were a kid? Did you use it until you were 30 because you thought it was funny when everyone else just thought you were annoying? What was your secret way of communicating? Were you really a spy and you just can't tell us? Were you too cool for all of it and just relied on telling everyone to fuck off?

Tell us about you.

Re: GTKY: Secret Codes

  • I was always a huge fan of Morse Code. Unfortunately, I was also in the group of telling everyone to fuck off so I never got to use it. But I was still proud of myself for learning it.

  • Not really when I was a kid. Or at least not that I can think of. When my H and I first started having sex (I was in HS, 17) we called it baking a cake for whatever reason. It stuck and 6 1/2 years later I still laugh every time I bake an actual cake.

I forgot, when my friend and I used to write notes in HS we made up a symbol like a flower or something for each letter. Decoding those notes was a bitch.

I don't remember the details of the code but me and my BFF had a code where words meant something completely different than their true meaning. No one ever knew what we were talking about and we spent weeks if not months developing it!

  • My friend and I came up with names for our crushes, but that's about it. I'm cringing just thinking about it. We decided to call them sparrows and their distinctive was their sparrow name. Blue Sparrow - guy with super blue eyes. Ugh. So embarrassing now.

  • My BFF in Jr High and I made up a code language (different symbols = different letters of the alphabet). We wrote notes to each other using it for about a day before we got tired of it and quit.

  • No secret language here, but my sister and I used to make up puzzles with pictures for words and have each other figure them out for messages when writing notes. For example, the word "I" would be a picture of an eye, then "can't" would be "C+picture of ant" etc. We thought it was pretty fun!

We also knew a little morse code and would knock on the wall to spell words between our bedrooms at night to talk past our bedtime! Sounds so silly now!

We didn't have a secret language, but in middle school (which sadly carried into HS), we gave ourselves nicknames that we signed our notes with. When we got older, we also gave the guys we liked nicknames for note-taking purposes. I have every note from HS still--and I can read them and know who the note was from and which guys are mentioned in the notes. Creating a new language would have been so much cooler... Edit because grammar is hard--and because I can't create a new paragraph.

  • No secret codes but I do a lot of voices/ accents. You will rarely hear me speaking normally to a friend or DH. DS is picking it up already. I'm seriously afraid it's going to mess him up when he starts going to school.

One night, in college, a friend and I decided it would be a great idea to put on a fake British accent when we went to see the musical RENT. It was going great and we had these guys believing us... it all broke down when we got drunk and were completely unable to string words together in a normal fashion, much less with a british accent... :)

Yessss! My friends and I used to do this all the time accents or making up fake life stories. This pic is from one night we decided we were the Costa Rican volleyball team.

Code word for Sex!! Why yes, My H and I do have a secret language called lets go mow the grass ;) But other than that, no secret codes here. Although I know think it would have been super cool!
  • My best friend and I would make up these elaborate code names for people (example, our one friend was code named "Exxon" because he sagged his pants and "sag" backward is "gas" and Exxon...you get the point). Everyone in our circle had a code name so we could stealthily talk about everyone. It would have been way cooler if we weren't always just talking only to each other.

DH and I squeeze the other's hand three times to say "I love you" when we may not be able to say it out loud. It was really nice during our wedding ceremony when we were both nervous as shit, and could take a moment to look into each other's eyes and communicate an "I love you."
  • It wasn't a secret language, per say, but my best friends in middle/high school spoke, and still sometimes speak, only in references to inside jokes and songs we use to sing.... and we also had lame nicknames. Thankfully, those have faded away, besides one of us who is still referred to as "Baby (name)." She was the youngest of our group, so we always picked on her. She is married with a baby now. lol

  • Not a code, but there was a group of us that spoke almost entirely in sarcasm and random metaphors and abbreviations and no one outside of that circle had the slightest fuck of a clue what we were talking about most of the time and now I'm cracking up just thinking about it.  It made my mom INSANE.

The one I think we used the most was "pagel" (rhyme with bagel), which came from "Probably a good life" with the "probably" part being sarcastic.   So whenever something stupid or annoying happened, we'd say something like "oh ill take a pagel with cream cheese please" instead of "this sucks".

So dumb. But it kept us very amused when we were 16.

  • I know my bestie in HS and I had a secret code for our notes.. can't remember it.

DH and I have certain things we say when we can't say what we want. Mostly inappropriate stuff :) There's also the "get me out of here!" word

My DH and I call it "having coffee" so if we're out with friends and want to get the hell out of there, one of asks the other if we want to go have some coffee. And my friend calls it "getting her oil changed" so whenever I visit Jiffy Lube I have a private little laugh with myself!

My friends little brothers used to talk in mountain Lion voices which meant everything you said started with an r. So my friend and I started speaking "mountain Lion language." Sounds lame but we thought we were cool at the time.

    Example

Rive raround ruh rock = Drive around the block
