Moms of boys - a question

Monk has started grabbing his penis in the bathtub. He does it over and over and it makes him scream in pain (he grabs and pulls really hard). At first I thought he had just discovered himself - but he has been doing this for a week now! I've checked him and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. Anyone else's LO do this?

Yes L does this too! I don't think they realize what they are grabbing or that its them hurting themselves. KWIM?

He grabs thigns all the time (blankets, my face, my hair, and it HURTS) I think when he grabs himself he doesn't realize it. I think its totally normal. I just gently unclench his fist as soon as he grabs on and put something like a toy in his hand.

DS has been doing it for a long while now. I guess it's normal.

DS did that once, and he decided he wouldn't do it again.  Perhaps he just knows he's pulling on something, and that he also feels pain, but hasn't put one and one together yet.  DS did this when he was almost 10 months.

LO does this, not to the point of screaming, but he gets this distant look on his face and sort of "explores" down there-in the bath and even at diaper changes.  It is, um... odd.  But I guess it is a normal part of self exploration.

Good to know it is normal! I guess I just figured that if it hurt he would stop doing it eventually. A week seems like a long time not to learn cause and effect but hopefully he will soon - it is hard to hear him screaming in pain.

DS has been doing it for months.  Every time we take off his diaper.  Boys will be boys.

B does pull on his penis but he hasn't hurt himself.  I'm not sure if he has realized he's pulling at a part of his body yet or if he just happens to grab at it randomly when his hands are in that region. 

Do you think he might be squeezing his testicles?  If you can't see anything physically wrong, he might just be pulling and squeezing too hard and not realizing that he's doing it to himself so he doesn't know when to stop.

B heads a bit lower.  He's a ball scratcher.  He must be thinking as I am taking the diaper off.."yes, my balls are itchy" bc he scratches and scratches and scratches the minute i unlatch the diaper!

He hasnt hurt himself yet though.  I'm always saying no, no, no and taking his hand away but I guess its normal, ok, going to happen forever!
