Bite problem

Hi ladies. My lo bit me the other day and broke skin. It's been getting more and more painful when he nurses on that side. The little nik looks worse after pumping today at work. Any tips to get through this? I was planning on just nursing until heeled but nursing/pumping seems to be exacerbating the problem.

Re: Bite problem

  • Ouch! Try to rub a bit of breast milk on it after nursing and let it air dry before you put your bra back over it. Apno is pretty great, but pricey. You can put triple antibiotic on your nipple after feeding as well, but should wipe if off before the before the next feed. Hope it heals quickly!

  • We just went through this! My 8mo bit me and I had a cut the length of both his teeth. I hand expressed for 4 days because nursing and pumping was just causing more pain. I finally tried an OTC ointment called Polysporin that a friend recommended and at the end of a day and a half of using it I was finally able to nurse him with no pain! Good luck mama.

i haven't tried it, but apparently you can mix up your own version of all-purpose nipple ointment (APNO) with over the counter ingredients:

You can also use OTC medication to make APNO yourself. This mixture may not be as effective as the prescriptive APNO. Mix:
    • Antibiotic: Bacitracin or Polysporin (not Neosporin)
    • Anti-fungal: Lotrimin AF (clotriamzole) or Monistat (miconazole)
    • Anti-inflammatory: Hydrocortisone 1%

Apply an equal amount of each ingredient to the tip of a clean finger. Mix together and apply to nipple and areola four times a day after the feeding. The correct amount of cream will make the nipple and areola appear glossy or shiny. Gently wipe nipple area with a cotton ball dipped in olive oil to remove any remaining cream before nursing.

feel better soon! i know those nipple injuries can be excruciating.
  • Thanks ladies, I ended up at the doctors with a slight infection.  I'm on antibiotics right now and it has been clearing up finally.  My supply has taken a bit of hit since I haven't been able to nurse/pump/hand express as effectively for the last week so I'm hoping it will bounce back.  If not, he's almost 11 months so we may start weaning, but I hope not!
