How much should baby be eating?

I'm not sure if this was already posted or not, but my five week old, when she has a bottle, she eats about four ounces and that seems like so much to me. And then anywhere from an hour to two hours later (sometimes even sooner), she'll want to nurse. Is she eating too much? If I take the bottle away, she gets pissed,

Same here. 5 wks 4oz formula or mix w milk every 3 hrs or sooner
  • I have no clue how much she's getting when I nurse her. I have a feeling it's not as much as when I give her a bottle of pumped milk.

When I supplement I only do 2 oz every two hours. Anymore than that and he spits it back up. Lately I've started adding an ounce after each breastfeed to top him off.

  • At 3 weeks he is getting 2-3oz per pumped bottle. I start at 2 and interrupt a few times to burp, snuggle into whoever is feeding, pacifier if he is really wanting to suck and then I'll add another half ounce if he needs it.

  • My son is 5 weeks, almost 6 and is eating 4 oz every 2-3 hours. He eats formula and breast milk mixed together. I think he would eat 5 oz but I am concerned because it seems like a lot for his age.
  • @kaysa2 what nipples are you using? My slow Flow still seem so fast :(

Have you tried dr browns preemie nipple? It's really made a difference for DS.

I'm mostly just breastfeeding but occasionally, I'll give her a bottle of pumped milk if we go somewhere and I remember to bring a bottle with me lol. I use Dr. Brown's. I didn't realize they made slow flow nipples. Maybe I'll see if I can find those. We just got out of newborn clothes and into 0-3, which makes me sad. My little baby isn't a little baby anymore

Edit: my post didn't finish even though I typed a bunch more. Wtf??

I JUST bought a bunch more newborn onesies. Oh well lol. She was 6.13 when she was born and I got on the scale with her yesterday and she's 10 pounds now! I don't have a baby, I have a piglet lol
  • My LO takes about 4 oz from the breast every 2-3 hours and she'll always take an extra ounce if we give her a bottle. I joined a breastfeedinv group where they have you weigh your baby before and after a feeding so you know how much they are eating.

  • DD is 2 weeks today and doing 4 oz. Dr told me not to go over 3 because even the three was too much. But the child is hungry ALL the time. If she's awake she wants to eat... Maybe a growth spurt?

My little guy is 16 days and takes 2.5 oz of expressed breastmilk about every 3 hours. He also breastfeeds about three times a day. So, in total 20+ oz a day...
  • I used formula for C and I always just fed her what she was hungry for.  Some days that was more and some days it was less.  I mentioned something to an older coworker once and she said I was over feeding because when she had her kids (20 years ago), they told her she could only give the kids 25 ounces a day total.  I think that's silly.  Some days I eat more than others, and I know for a fact that my friend, who is about the same size that I am, eats way less than I do.  If grown ups eat different amounts, I don't see why babies wouldn't want to eat different amounts from each other.  It seems silly to me to limit a baby when they are hungry.  Just my two cents.

  • My LO has been cluster feeding for a few days and nights now (growth spurt at start of 4 weeks) and just now spit up a ton multiple times then wants to eat again. If I don't offer the boob, she screams. It seems like overeating but like @kaysa2 said, everything says feed on demand.

  • My DD is two weeks old and eats between 3-4oz per feeding, every 2.5-3 hours. My pedi said 3oz is okay for her age, though I think he'd say 4oz is on the high end but we have also been told to just feed on demand because she lost a lot of weight in the beginning so we had to work to get it back up. She gets pumped BM and formula.

I feel like we are always dealing with growth spurts at the same time. Our LOs must be on the same schedule. But yes, with EBFing, I feed on demand and have no clue what he is getting. Must be a lot because he eats often and is gaining weight very well.
