2nd Trimester

How early did you find out you were having a boy?

I am a little over 13 weeks! I was told that there was an 80% chance it was a boy. I am excited but I know that anything can change at any point..so I am trying not to get too eager. But, hey...how am I supposed to not be excited? Just curious if anyone else found out they were having a boy at this early, and was it accurate? OR were you told you were having a boy and it turned out to be a girl? Regardless, boy or girl so exciting!

  • I found out at my anatomy scan at 20 weeks. To be honest I was glad the tech at my 13 week scan didn't give us a guess because it would have made me really anxious until the anatomy scan when things are more clear.
  • We found out at our a/s at 19 weeks that we are having a boy. Same as last time. I wouldn't put a lot of faith into a 13 week u/s being accurate.

  • We found out at 18 weeks as well 13 weeks might be a little early I would say!
  • I was told at 10 weeks baby looked like a boy.  Blood test confirmed I'm having a boy.  In my case, the office had a brand new, state-of-the-art machine.  The pictures were clear and not the typical "chewed up gum look."  The best part was seeing baby move all around, but I was so excited I didn't get it on video.  There is one website that shows how similar they are (baby2see or something) but I haven't found another that can confirm this website is 100% accurate.  In my pictures, the boy parts were quite large and I can't imagine that girl parts are that large.

Best of luck to you!  I wouldn't buy anything gender specific just yet.  There are a lot of people who are told one thing, then it changes.

    Baby boy due January 10

  • I was told we're having a boy at 16 weeks, but a good friend of mine had her first ultrasound at 12w and they told her she was having a boy at that appointment. She had her son about a month ago so that tech guessed right!
  • My doctor said he was pretty sure I was having a boy at 13 weeks. Turned out she's very much a little girl in there! Next time I won't encourage my doctor to guess at the NT scan, like everyone else said, it's way too early to tell.

  • Just lurking here and wanted to say that when I was pregnant with my daughter, I was told at 13 weeks that I may be having a boy. Well at 20 weeks confirmed at girl, I think it is about a 50/50 chance of your doctor being right at 13 weeks. I definitely would not go out and buy boy clothes just yet.

Even if somebody was told boy at 13 weeks and it turned out to be a boy - techs have a 50/50 chance of getting correct at that point. Like pp said, they start out with a genital nub easily mistaken for a boy that early.

With DS1 we found out at the anatomy scan at about 20 weeks. This one I had M-21 so there was a Y chromosome detected at 11.5 weeks but when I asked if that test can be wrong (it is accurate but there are errors) at the NT scan, the tech said external confirmation is a guess at that point anyways.  We are having a boy, but they couldn't **see** that until AS at 21 weeks even though it was confirmed with the M21 test.

  • I was told at 14 weeks we were 80% chance having a girl... next appt at 18 weeks, turns out its a boy! (and confirmed at the 22 week appt) So I think 13-14 weeks is a little early.  Just wait an extra month and know for sure instead of getting hopes up, thinking you are having one gender and it turning out not to be the case.
  • I went for an elective ultrasound at 15w 3d and found out for sure it's a boy. He was not shy AT ALL, and his "parts" are very developed. I'll go back for the a/s at 20 weeks, but I'm 100% sure mine is a boy and so was the ultrasound tech.

Were suppossed to find out at our 15 week appointment but the doc said you can usually tell at 15-16 weeks so there is a chance it might be a little soon. FX the US tech can tell! :)

  • I had my first ultrasound at 23 weeks (I thought I was 21 weeks, and then my due date changed) as we do it later in my Province.

It was VERY obviously a boy. The tech wasn't allowed to tell me either way, but when he took the screenshot for the Gender, it was hard not to notice the anatomy :)

I have heard multiple stories of people being told the gender too early and it being wrong. Its takes a while for the genitals to even develope!

     It's a BOY! Est. Due Date - October 17th

  • I found out with my first son at 16 weeks. My second son they guessed at 12 weeks that he was a boy and they were right, which i confirmed at a 16 week gender scan.
  • I had two U/S one around 14W and one around 17W, both said it's a boy.......I'm glad I waited to go out and buy anything, because she is ALLLL Girl!!!! That's one of the reasons i'm Team Green with this one.

  • found out at 12 weeks :)  had the bloodtest thats 98% accurate - plus you could see it on the ultrasound they did that day :)

  • I had the new panorama blood test done and was told difinitivly by the chromosomes it is a boy, i was 11 weeks
  • We had our anatomy scan at 17 weeks, we found out then.  The tech was 100% sure.

I had early ultrasounds with my first 2 pregnancies (checking on placenta preevia) and both times at 15wks is was obvious that they were both 100% boy. I know some elective ultrasound places will tell you the sex as early as 14wks. Not sure before that though because I think for a few weeks genitals look the same for both male and female. GL

  • The male/female genitalia are not fully distinguished until about 16 weeks gestation..so even if they say your LO is 80% one or the other before then, they have a 50% chance of being right or wrong. I would not go with any sex determination done via u/s before the anatomy scan.

  • We had the option of doing genetic testing at 12 weeks and found out at 14 weeks that it is a little boy! This is probably a good thing because at my 20 week scan he was keeping his legs closed tight so we couldn't see anything anyways! If you go by the old wives tales and the heart rate, they are so wrong for us. His heart rate has stayed above 150 most of the pregnancy, he's an active little guy!
  • My Doctor had a 75% suspicion it was a boy a little after 10 wks.  A few days ago I had my 14 wk check up & my doctor said he is 95-99% certain it is a boy.  I could see what the doctor was talking about on the ultrasound, but my husband said it looked like a snowy TV so we decided to wait till the next visit for a 100% certainty before announcing to anyone. But from what I hear Doctors can have an early guess of a boy but not a girl, and it depends on the doctor and their experience.  My doctor has been an OB & head chairman of OB/GYN & infertility for 30 years & he is retiring this year (I'm scared about that), but I'd say he knows what he is talking about. :-j
  • I found out at 18 weeks. The tech had to use the ultrasound device to jiggle my belly a bit to get him to turn over and it was funny because it worked prefectly. He rolled over and went spread-eagle with his legs. She goes, "there's the money shot!" LOL
  • it just varys from baby to baby.

  • I found out I was having a boy at 17 weeks, and it was confirmed at my 20 week scan.

I'd think 13 weeks is a little early, but it's not unheard of to find out that early. I was told it was too early to tell with my first at 14 weeks & didn't find out I was having a girl until 20 weeks.
  • 13 Weeks might be a little too soon to know the gender. I wouldn't get my hopes up and start remodeling the baby's room until you find out for sure. My doctor told me to come in at 20 weeks to check gender.
  • I had a level 2 ultrasound at 20 weeks and found out then.
  • 19 weeks, 4 days. I wouldn't want an early guess. I'd rather wait and know for sure . . . I guess the only way to really know for sure is to wait until birth, but techs are usually very accurate around 20 weeks.
  • Our u/s tech told us today at our NT Scan at 12w4d. They normally typically say don't even ask cause it's way way too early but she said she could tell and asked if we wanted to know. I don't 100% believe it cause it really is reaaaaally early but I guess time will tell. This will be our 3rd boy.
  • 18 weeks. It was very apparent. Good luck
