SAHM check in

edited July 2014 in June 2014 Moms
I realize that just about all of is are SAHM right now, but thought I'd start a check in for every one now and those of us who will be here full time. How's it going?

I survived week one as a full time SAHM, with no daycare breaks. Holy exhaustion! It's hard to find free activities for toddlers that won't melt us all. Today I broke and spent money to go to a museum. We are trying to cut way back on spending, so I try not to do that often. I think when my il's have C tomorrow, Charlie and I will hit up a craft store and lay in supplies for projects.

Eta: between Charlie's one month and then his swollen penis, and C's allergic reaction, I did see the pedi three times this week...would love to cut back on that number!

Re: SAHM check in

  • I completely agree with you mrsdbc, my little guy has way too much energy to be stuck indoors all day but its hard cause my lo won't let me put her down so I can take him outside. I think I'm gonna have to look into gymnastics plus that's a inside thing for kids.
  • We have a pretty solid routine here as well... up by 7am down by 10pm. But we have been in SoCal for a week now and we will be here until thursday and then I will make the drive back home. My 3 year old has been AMAZING while my 2 year old seems to be having a melt down daily. I'm thinking it's from this whole trip bc it has only been going on the past week and DH wasn't able to come with us. The baby is 3 weeks now and doing great. I can't wait to go back home but I am not looking forward to the 9.5 hour drive (not including stops). I'm a full time SAHM so I really like the idea of checking up with you ladies... It may take awhile for me to get on bc we are in the process of getting electricity and internet. But I'll catch up :)

  • J is 5 weeks old and we've been on our own for 4 weeks now. I've been making sure to get out of the house pretty much every day which helps.

  • This was my first week by myself with my 2.5-year-old DD and 4-week-old baby. We made it to library story time, so she got to see her friends (and I got to talk to adults besides my husband! yay!) and we walked to the local park, but with temps over 100, we stayed indoors most days. Thankfully Netflix has new episodes of "Daniel Tiger!"
  • I don't know what I would do without Daniel Tiger and Super Why!

I'm still getting the hang of having two kids. My almost 2 year old is starting to behave better and she's just starting to be interested in helping me with the baby. I'm lonely though- my husband works long days and while I love my toddler, they don't make the best conversation ;)
  • We've been doing pretty good so far. That being said, today has been rough. Both girls have refused to nap despite all my attempts. As a result I'm still in my spit up saturated jammies and have yet to brush my teeth. As soon as DH gets home I'm taking a long uninterrupted shower.
I feel kinda bad for DD1 because we haven't gotten out of the house much because DD2 is a car seat screamer. I'd feel much worse about it if she didn't have daycare twice a week and daddy daughter dates on the weekends.
Hopefully we'll find our grove soon and start venturing out more.

  • We are kind of in a routine. DS doesn't always take his naps and sometimes requires a lot of rocking to go down, but we are getting there. Someone upstairs loves me because everyday, the two naps overlap by at least an hour so I get some time to myself.
  • I just have to say that those of you with more than one kid are awesome and I bow down to you all- just the one is tiring enough!

DS and I finally made it through the 6- week growth spurt- my nipples and I couldn't be more relieved! DH has been back to work for 5 weeks, so we have a pretty good daytime routine and DS is starting to sleep longer at night. I'd like to get out and walk more with DS, but it's too hot around here (our lows are mid 80s, ugh). I can't remember who it was but someone mentioned walking around the mall and I am definitely going to start doing that. After years of working retail I never thought I'd be one of those mall walkers!

Our days are okay. My 2 year old watches more cartoons then I like to admit though. I have a hard time finding the energy to get us all ready to go outside etc but once dh gets home and we eat dinner we all go for a walk and to the park or run errands etc. today I did manage to take the two littles to the beach though! It only took us an hour to get out of the house lol
  • @Lilygrace48 you're amazing

I guess I can consider myself a SAHM, I work from home and watch the babe while DH works 14 hrs a day 6 days a week. Well, its not usually that bad, more like 12 hrs a day 5 days, but this past week he's been working 10am-1am and I am home all day with the little guy.  I love being home with him but damn I need a break! It does help that I can drink craft beer again :)

LO is on no sign of a schedule.  One day he'll be an angel and nurse every 3 hrs and nap 2hrs in between, while others (like today) he wants the boob every hour and refuses to take a nap longer than 15mins. It also hot as balls outside so we're cooped up indoors with Netflix. Anyone else got their LO into the crib yet?  Mine fluctuates between the Mamaroo, bouncer and boppy pillow.  I thought that loud daily noises were supposed to help them sleep but I feel lie it keeps him stimulated and I want to put him in the crib with the lights off for an hour or so during the day so I can get some things done?!? He's in the Roo for 3 hour stretches at night. Tips?

  • @izzetoot‌ try picking times that you'd like to be his daily naps going forward and try sticking him in the crib for just those times. Ice started doing his 9am or so and his 1pm or so in the crib. He also sleeps in there at night. I found with c that this worked to get her on a schedule so I'm starting it up with charlie and hoping for the best.

  • @wareagle1220‌ no, at this age I still let them fall asleep on me and then transfer them to the crib. as they get older and get their schedule down a little more it becomes easier to put them down awake. So basically, when he falls asleep anytime around the 9 am mark, into his crib he goes. If that's 8:30 today, that's fine. If its closer to 10, also OK, as long as its that sort of morning time frame. As he starts having more awake time, I'll start encouraging the nap at 9 by changing and feeding at 8:30, preferably in his nursery, and using the crib. The rest of his naps right now happen in his bouncy chair in the living room. HTH!

@wareagle1220‌ I've checked meetup and haven't found anything. There is a Facebook group for moms in my town, but they don't do anything together, just list items for sale and random posts. I guess the other thing that concerns me is that there are a TON of non-vaccers in my town; frequent anti-vac posts of the FB group, 10+ whooping cough outbreaks at one of the local schools... We live in a small town of 8k; maybe I just need to bite the bullet and look for mommies in the larger town 15 miles away.

    What area are you in?

  • @Tdonatoni‌ I met a lot of friends at library story time!

@elsa1688‌ Ojai, CA - hippie central, spiritual vortex seekers, and the stomping ground of formal Hollywood glamour era stars. It's such a bizarre community.

I always think of brothers and sisters when I here ojai. Anyone else remember that show? Lol. I joined a group through church and a new mom group through the hospital. There's some mommy and me yoga classes and swim classes in my area - maybe there's some by you?

Went through my first week last week. Boy oh boy.. Single parenting is so hard! But Hubby shows no interest in bonding with the baby so he comes home from work, goes to sleep, wakes up and goes to work again.. Must be nice..
I told him today he is taking care of her all day while I get things done and taken care of and get some much needed rest! His idea is feeding her and sticking her in the swing to put her to sleep oieee I have to say I am glad I take care of her 95% of the time or else she would be a complete vegitable with no human interaction.. Its like pulling teeth trying to get him to even talk to her.

Hiiii that was my week.. I hope this week is better.. =\ she will be 4 weeks on Tuesday.. I hope to start getting some sort of schedule down soon!!
  • I just had my first week alone and I was so scared but it turned out great! We went to his doc on Monday, out to lunch with my friend Tuesday, to my doc Wednesday, grocery shopping Thursday and just had a chill day Friday. DH is very hands on when he gets home which makes me happy. He has had some nights where he needs to finish his notes but he waits until LO goes to bed. He helps a little in the MOTN but I try to do it myself so he can sleep.
  • just finished week 89 of being a SAHM. it's so damn hot here I can't take B outside because he gets horrible heat rash. so we have been hanging out inside and DS is getting to indulge in his Mickey Mouse Clubhouse addiction and eating too many chicken nuggets. we go to target A LOT. also I have become a mall walker and that's cool with me. grocery shopping is horrific now but babywearing makes it a little easier. that pretty much sums up our weekly routine for the summer.
  • This week will be the second week that dd and I are on our own. I have no idea how you moms with more than one do it. You are my new heros! Isabel hates being put down during the day, so she sleeps on me a lot. It forces me to relax and put my feet up but... How do all you mothers with toddlers to run after do it?

This week, I hope to find a project or two to work on, and maybe try to get together with another mom who lives on my street. I'm trying to enjoy this time as much as possible so I can feel ready to go back to school in September.

I hate to say it but my husband is terrible at taking care of babies... I tried to have him take over this weekend so I can get somw time away and i ended up taking over every single time because he doent try to calm her or talk to her or anything.. He just stares at her crying. Poor thing.. Im glad I can stay at home with her and not worry about him taking care of her while I work. =\
  • I'm not new to the SAHM world but I am new to the SAHM of two world. I've been amazed how smooth the transition has been and how I've continued our routine so easily. There are days (like today) where I just can't give Nola as much attention but that's when her being able to entertain herself comes in handy!

    I am really struggling.
Home with a very high energy toddler and a newborn is too much.

Honestly, if I wasn't nursing I would go back to work already.

Keeping DS entertained in a non-destructive way takes all of my energy. Which I can't give to him because LO is cluster feeding.

Thank god for baby wearing. It's the only thing that has enabled us to get out of the house. And we go out everday or I will lose my mind. Most of which I'm sure is already gone.

I am not cut out for this SAHM thing.
  • @JNerd‌ I've been struggling with that ad well. It's hard. I had my six week pp this morning so C stayed home with dh...which means no stimulation because he was working and put on TV for her. I got home, he left for work, and I was left with a rambunctious toddler who wasn't tired enough for a nap. FML. Even on days when they don't sleep at the same time, I cherish toddler nap time.
