Baby Sign Language

Has anyone been working on this? Has anyone had any luck? I have been doing a few signs since 4~5 months, I think DS may have started signing milk. The OT pointed it out today when we were working on feeding that she thought he might be asking for milk. Does anyone know about when they usually start signing back? Anyone with any experience?

Re: Baby Sign Language

  • I put on a baby signing DVD once a day for dd. As well as using them with her on a daily basis. I started it about 2.5 months ago. She loves watching it and now signs "more" and "all done". She gets very excited when I do the milk sign and she dives towards my boobs lol. She knows what they mean but is only signing the two so far. She's 9.5 months.

  • They teach basic signs at my little gal's daycare and I wasn't sure if she was picking up anything but in the past few days she's been doing the sign for bottle when she's thirsty and stops doing it when satisfied. So i think she's trying to communicate, but who knows :) I think they definitely can pick it up at this age.
  • We don't use any videos but I have been doing some basics with her. She's got "more" down (modified approximation, she does one fist to her palm), and we just started working on drink.

  • I've been trying to sign with him, but am unfortunately not very consistent (typically during meals if we do). Usually when I sign to him he looks at me like "WTF are you doing?". Lol, hopefully we'll get there. I just want him to sign "love mommy". :)

  • Thanks ladies! Yesterday he said 'more', twice. He won't make either sign on command but he does them spontaneously. I'm super excited! @Zoly1103‌ I hadn't worked on 'love mommy' but I started yesterday :)
  • We were planning on signing but never ended up with the DVD someone was supposed to lend me. Does anyone know if it's too late to start now?
  • I don't think it is too late. Someone on the board (I think @CurlingRocks‌, maybe) had said before that they started later with an older child and that it had worked well for them. We have not used a DVD. Good Luck.
