Anyone skipping on vegtables ?

I'm starting to feel really bad that I've been skipping out on vegtable during this pregnancy, I can't stomach them at all they make me feel sick. Moms who already have children how much did this effect your child and is anyone else skipping out? Other than that I've been conscience about what I eat and drink

Re: Anyone skipping on vegtables ?

  • It's more likely to affect you than baby. Your vitamin stores might become depleted as your body steals from them to feed baby what he/she needs to grow.

Are you taking a PNV? It's no substitute for veggies, but it's a start.

What veggies have you tried, and what makes you feel sick? There are SO many options that even if you only find a few things you can eat, it's worth it. If raw bothers you, cook them. You can also purée veggies and add them to sauces or even ground beef. Sneak them into smoothies, etc.

A hundred women could tell you that they skipped vegetables while pregnant and their kids are fine, but it wont change that vegetables are a very important part of your diet and you really shouldn't be 'skipping' them. A PNV is a good start, but it doesn't replace whole foods. Having aversions to foods you used to like is normal...I definitely can't stomach some things I used to love. What have you tried? You might google how to sneak vegetable into food for kids and try some of those tricks.
Yep all of this. Just because baby might be fine, it doesn't mean that you should be skipping them. They should be an important part of your nutrition.

  • It is tough when they make you sick.  I didn't eat veggies at all during the first tri with either of my pregnancies because I was vomiting so much, but that isn't really an ideal situation.

Are you physically throwing up when you eat them? If not, I would try really hard to start eating them, even if it is just one veggie a day - it is better than nothing.  You might actually find that you start to feel better once you are eating better.  I personally feel like crap when I eat like crap, and it is exacerbated by pregnancy.

Here are some more ideas in addition to the PPs:
Do you like potatoes? If so, how about baked/mashed/steamed sweet potatoes? I don't know if this is your thing, but I'll sometimes bake a sweet potato and then stuff it with broccoli, and add a touch of parmesean and sour cream.

Blending some kale or spinach into a fruit smoothie is an easy way to get some greens.  Also, Pinterest is full of recipes for green smoothies, many of which are green in color, but taste like fruit.

Spaghetti with tomato sauce - you can sneak veggies into the sauce.

Add some broccoli to a baked mac and cheese. Or even better, puree some cauliflower and add it to the cheese sauce, then bake it with some broccoli.

Beans are an excellent source of nutrition - bean burritos, bean enchiladas, huevos rancheros with beans/salsa/avocado, chili with beans, etc.

Soups like minestrone, pasta e fagoli, gazpacho, and split pea are also full of veggies.

If you tell us what veggies you normally like, maybe we can help you come up with ideas.

  • I'm with PP. There are some products which have veggies in them, like pasta, fruit juice, etc....maybe try those.

Also, the book "deceptively delicious" by Jessica Seinfeld may help you incorporate veggies into your food without noticing.

  • I was like this in the first trimester with DS1, and I'm normally a veggie-holic, so it was really hard for me, I just didn't know what to cook.  I found l was obsessed with pizza though, so I would just load my pizza up with veggies.  If all else failed, I'd get that V-8 fusion stuff.  I think 6 oz. has a full serving of veggies and a full serving of fruit.  Ask yourself what you do like eating, and see if you can include more veg.  Also, having someone else cook them may help too.  I remember being grossed out by even cutting carrots (yeah, I know it's weird, raw meat I had no problem with, but I'd run from a tossed salad), but I went to dinner at my sister's, and she made a really good stir fry, and I was able to have several helpings.  Oh, I almost forgot, try exploring other spices and herbs on your veggies, I couldn't stomach rosemary and cilantro with my first pregnancy, but with this one I'm just fine.

My son ended up being incredibly healthy (totally anecdotal), and I snapped out of my non-veg stupor by the middle of the second trimester, but once I found out I was pregnant with this one, I did get a PNV from a whole food source (you can find them at health food stores or in the natural section of your grocer) instead of the lab created supplements you get prescribed from the dr.  My dr. gave the okay with my alternative PNV, but the only downside is paying for it out of pocket instead of insurance covering it (they're about $60 a bottle).

Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • I had a hard time in my first trimester, and have been eating horribly.  I have started making a good effort to work in veggies however I can.  My second trimester is going better.  I started drinking Spinach Smoothies. Sounds gross but its really good and I get some veggies in this way https://www.thevspotblog.com/2014/04/chocolate-mint-spinach-smoothie.html

You can also just use milk, banana and vanilla protein powder.  The banana masks the taste of the spinach.  You get a nice serving of veggies super quick.  This on top of my PNV.

Sometimes it is just a matter of getting creative with how you cook your veggies. I love them grilled or broiled, or I mix extra veggies in casseroles where I normally wouldn't.

  • I don't eat as many as I should but I try to get a veggie in at dinner every night. I do take a PNV so hopefully that helps.
  • I'm taking my PNV everyday. You all just have me great ideas on eating my veggies never really thought about smoothies and juices . I'm going to try those zucchini cookies as well. Like I said fruit is non problem it's those veggies that make me nauseous
  • I just mask them in smoothies or juice them with fruit if I am not in the mood to eat whole veggies. I went through the hating veggies with a passion phase during 1st trimester. The thought of broccoli seriously infuriated me. My DH and I even had a big argument about my hate of broccoli. Looking back at that is really funny to me now.

Its tough, but we need those veggies and not just for baby. My body starts acting weird if I've gone days without eating them.

Hope you are able to find a solution.

  • That's why we take prenatal vitamins! I'm not good about getting them not pregnant, so I've been also pretty bad during. The exception is green beans. I love them! However, I try to ask for extra tomato or lettuce on sandwiches. I've also tried to eat as much salad as I can handle.

To answer your question, I didn't eat them hardly at all with DS and he's just fine.

  • Raw salad gives me the WORST heartburn in the entire world, but I still force them down. I also try and incorporate veggies into cooked meals, like pasta sauce, stir-fry meals, etc., so I get them in multiple meals.

Also, I  make a veggie smoothie every single morning with cucumber, celery, spinach, kale, lemon, half an apple, etc. This helps me get in about 2 servings of veggies every single morning, and it's easier to get down.

     It's a BOY! Est. Due Date - October 17th
