I work in medical records for a hospital. I will be taking 12 weeks total: 5 weeks short term disability, whatever PTO I had left (DD1 was sick a lot last winter), and the rest unpaid. I will be going back part time, working from home, so not too bad.

Research scientist. Took 6w off when I had DD1 but spent most of it writing my PhD thesis. Currently unemployed, so indefinitely on leave. But I hope to find a job for the fall/winter and get at least 4months home with the LOs.

    What kind of research?

I'm a manager/bartender at a bar and music venue... I can take off whatever I need within reason all unpaid. I had to save what I could to cover my mat leave and will be going in tomorrow to talk about how and when I'll return, which will probably be weekend after next. All in all I'll have taken about 8wks.

I'm a nurse at a private clinic with crappy benefits. Used to work at huge hospital with great benefits but had no plans to have a LO so took this clinic job with better hours. Got 6 weeks unpaid maternity leave. I had less than a week of vacay to put towards that. And I was taken out of work a week early for BP. So I was off a total of 7 weeks. LO was born 5/10 and I started back to work last Monday.

I've handled it decent but only because my mom has been coming to my house watching LO but he will have to go to daycare in two weeks. :(

Can't even think about that yet.

I'm in Rochester, NY. I am a senior staff asst in the biology dept at a local private university.

I got 6weeks paid maternity leave that runs concurrently with 12 weeks unpaid of FMLA. Then I asked to take an additional 12 weeks of unpaid personal leave. That guarantees my job through October. But, the plan is to stay out a full year or so and then see what's available in my dept (ideally) or somewhere else at the university. Fortunately I get to return to all of my same earned benefits since I have worked there 5+ years.

If I dont want to go back and we are ok financially, then I will just stay home. We are hoping for a second LO in the next couple of years anyway.

I grew up in Rochester!! Live in Cali now but my whole family still lives there and my husbands family is from Buffalo!

Sorry to hijack! Had to give a shout out!

I am home indefinitely, I was a manager of a wellness center. Don't make enough to cover the cost of child care so I will be a SAHM. Makes things a little tight but we will make it work.

    Curious, what does FMLA mean?
  • Options
I meant to add that I have zero FMLA at my office. FMLA states if the company employs less than 50 people they are exempt from any and all FMLA rules. Some states and companies have their own but not my shitty job.

Physical therapist. Took off 13 weeks (7 wks short term disability at 60% pay, rest was vacation time so and one week unpaid). My LO came early so I went back to work 6/12, my husband is a teacher so he is off with him until August. I am hoping to reduce my hours by next year, but we will see.

@letal316‌ FMLA stands for family medical leave act. It gives you up to 12 weeks in a calendar year for things like personal illness or caring for a sick family member. It just means they can't fire you. Smaller companies are exempt, and usually you have to be employed for a year to be eligible.

I am a Content Marketing Exec and I am taking 8 weeks full.  5 weeks fully paid (based on company tenure) and 3 weeks at 80 percent (STD that I paid into).

I could have used my 4 weeks vacation for the full 12, but I had my boss agree to me coming back 2-3 days a week through September (spreading out my last weeks)...with one full week that we take every year at the end of August.

My husband's boss agreed to also alternate days with me, do DS doesn't have to start daycare until September.

It's a win-win for me.  I am ready to go back PT for sure...but I will have a lot of 4 and 5 day weekends during the summer.  Plus the hubby will get some bonding time too because DD1 is at camp all day.

I'm a therapist at a psychiatric hospital. I had a couple weeks of PTO followed by STD until 6 weeks. The last six weeks were unpaid, and I pulled money from investments to afford it. My LO is 2 months today, and I don't know how people go back at 6 weeks. I'm dreading leaving him at 12! I have a meeting with my boss this week to see if I can transition back for a couple weeks part time.

I'm a Contracts Manager.  I get a very generous amount of paid leave (~ 4.5 months) and then am adding vacation + unpaid time off, so I'm off for the remainder of the year.  Big props to all you ladies who are already back to work!!!  I haven't much been able to even get myself showered every day before 5pm so have tremendous awe for you mommies back at work!!!

Teacher - 6 months. 4 weeks post-baby sick days, 1 week of family leave, then summer vacation (paid through my summer savings account), and the remaining 11 weeks of family leave in the fall. NJ has 6 weeks paid 60%, and 6 weeks unpaid. So I'm really only taking 6 weeks without pay, and my disability policy will work out to me being paid for 4 of those weeks. So...really just 2.

Teacher (first grade). I was out about 7 weeks at the end of the school year 34 or 36 days- I forget which. Used sick days for that. Luckily I had a ton of sick days built up because doing sub plans is such a pain that I have to be about half dead to take a day. Gonna have to get over that next year. Now it's summer - first summer in more than 20 years I haven't had a summer job!

Planning to go back in August. Haven't counted the weeks but they are flying by!!! Wish I could go back part time and/or as a specialist instead of regular classroom to make the work/home juggle a little less hard (and not have to do sub plans for when DD is sick!) and also for intellectual/professional rejuvenation but that's not happening so oh well. My fantasy is to be an elementary science specialist/ teacher coach but there's no such thing around here.

That said I'm very fortunate to have the summer as essentially more paid mat.leave and as some pps have said am in awe of you mamas who are already back to work!! And sorry that leave policies in this country are so stingy that for most of you being back so soon wasn't really because you chose to do that.

Just wondering for all you teachers - did you try to "plan" to have your babies around the end of the school year to have more time off? My SIL is a teacher and she had both of her kids in May, which worked out really well bc she had off for the summer and then used her FMLA in the fall. What a nice perk :-)

No. We'd been trying for well over a year and had 2 early losses so were just grateful to get a bfp and have it stick whenever it would be. We were just extra lucky that the time that finally worked gave me extra free maternity leave.

I probably could take additional time at the beginning of next school year (especially as i still have sick days left ) under FMLA but really don't want to since having my class start the year with a sub and then coming in after that is bad in so many ways.

I was hoping for spring but had an early miscarriage. If I take FMla in the fall it won't be paid. Of course paid just meant my sick days anyway.
