They were talking about this on the radio the other day....I don't think it's ok to watch sexually explicity shows/movies in public where others can see your screen.  Example, the DJ was at the gym and he noticed the woman next to him was watching Orange is the New Black on her Ipad and a sex scene came up.

I don't think it matters that it is a hit popular show, not everyone around you wants to see that.  It's one thing if you're watching something that you don't know has a scene like that and you cover the screen, but anyone who has watched more than one episode knows what kind of scenes are in it.

I love OITNB but I don't think out in public is the appropriate place to watch it.  Most of the callers thought the DJ was being uptight that he thought it was inappropriate but I agreed with him.

I dunno. Don't be nosey? I mean as long as they have headphones on and aren't subjecting you to it, I don't really see the problem? I mean we are talking on like an iPad or something right? So you don't HAVE to look. It's not like they are playing it on a big screen.

On the other hand. I can't stand people having extended phone conversations in public. I don't know why it bothers me so much but it does. I don't want to hear about all the details of your life. Especially explicit ones. While you are walking around a store with your kid. I am judging you. Pay attention to your kid, and talk about that wild party at a more appropriate time.

Edit: I admit I haven't seen the show, and I am pretty sure I draw the line before pron, so maybe it IS that bad and I am niave.

  • I agree with @angelsnight I don't feel like that's appropriate in public.

I was on a flight in the middle seat and dosed off. When I woke I wanted to peer out the window and the guy next to me was looking at 99% naked pics of a girl on his phone. I got up to go to the bathroom and had DH switch seats with me when I got back! I was so uncomfortable when I realized what he was looking at... Ugh

I have another....I hate when people are snobs about certain books and TV shows/movies.  My SIL absolutely hates 50 shades of grey (and Twilight).  That's fine, to each their own, but she thinks it needs to be banished to the fiery depths of the library hell (I'm paraphrasing her here) and I know she must judge me a little because I like it.

She says it's not even about the smut, just how poorly written it is.  OK, I admit, the author is no award winner, and yes sometimes her constant over use of certain words annoy me.  But overall I found it an entertaining read and I've read each one more than once.  I see nothing wrong with reading something from time to time that doesn't require brain activity.  Just like PLL, I just got into it and I'm hooked.  Is it the best written and acted show?  No, but when I get home from work I love to just plop down and binge watch.

I don't like any of the things you mentioned, but I totally agree with you. If someone doesn't like it, just don't read/watch it.No need to act like no one should read/watch.

Which beings me to your other UO -- if you don't like what someone next to you in the gym or wherever is watching, just don't watch it. I assume they have earphones in, and aren't shoving it in your face. Just don't look over at them.
I see your point and if it can only be seen because someone is purposefully rubbernecking then yeah, just don't look if you're offended.  But at the gym on the treadmills, I can see how it could be seen (especially if it's a bigger screen) without actually intending to.  I guess the way I see it is, I work in a cube farm and I would assume nobody would think it is ok to watch OITNB at work, so why is it appropriate elsewhere in public?  I mean, I would totally watch PLL at work, but not anything like OITNB, Game of Thrones, True Blood, etc.

  • I would love to shelter her from things that aren't age appropriate. Unfortunately it's totally impossible whether it's a commercial on tv, a song on the radio, a conversation on a bus or a book cover in target...inappropriate stuff is absolutely everywhere. Believe me you will get very creative with your responses when they ask you a tough question!

And yeah if someone is watching sex scenes in a kids area, they are probably going to hear it from someone pretty quickly! Chances are good that they are a weirdo anyway if that's the case!
  • If a person is blindsided by the pay scale in their CHOSEN field, that person should have done more research before choosing that path. I'm not a twatwaffle either.

How many of us chose to get pregnant and were blindsided by the amount of work and stress it is to be a parent versus the perception before we had babies?

I forgot to comment on this one. Truthfully I think this comparison is a bit ridiculous. If parenting blindsided you with the amount of work, you can't walk away (I suppose you could but we will assume that isn't the case). If your job is truly too much, it's perfectly acceptable to change careers. It's a pain in the ass to do so, but a teacher is no more stuck in their profession than I am in mine. Parenting is a lifelong commitment and obligation (again making assumptions here) regardless of preconceived notions....a job is not.

No teacher goes into the profession for the money. Some get into it for summers/winter/ spring break, and the insurance and those are the people that typically make bad teachers.
But, for the most part, teachers are highly underpaid, but they stick with it because when it comes down to it, knowing you are making a difference in just one child's life is worth it!
I taught for 6 years and I'm going to take a few years off to be a SAHM, but I will probably go back someday, because I love it!

And, I'm really sad I didn't get to experience band in high school. When I was in middle school, the band director made a pass at me, so I quit. But my DH was in band in high school and college, and if it weren't for band/music, we would have never met!! Band kids ROCK!!

  • I'm loving all of my former fellow band geeks!!! I had no idea! So much love over here! :x =D>

Saxophone over here!!! I loved marching band and concert band, best years of my life.

On the not enough pay note: I don't believe all teachers complain about being underpaid. I almost went into education, until I realized I was going to be paying off my student loans until after retirement. But like pp's have said, teachers don't go into the profession for the money, and they are underpaid, especially for the amount of education you need now to make 30k. I think they have a right to complain. And it's not a "poor choice" to become a teacher. I think what other bumpies are saying was that was a "poor choice" of words.

  • Honestly @bandteacher you have legitimate gripes in your second paragraph. No doubt. However as I read each and every question I instantly was able to come up with a question related to my industry that mirrored yours. Every single question. I'm not going to list them out (unless you want me to just for proof!) but I think these are so all-encompassing for you because it's your personal reality. But the truth of it is that a lot of what you are saying can be mapped right over onto any other industry. One example I will throw out...people in my job get fired when their client's business goes under...they had nothing to do with it and couldn't have stopped it..often there was no way they even would have known about it to get the bank out...but it cost the bank money so something has to be done.

Again I'm not discounting the shit you take in your job. It sucks and it's legitimately something to complain about. Like I said before though, I think most people can empathize but, for me, I just can't sympathize.
  • You know why no one is willing to pay the taxes to pay educators a salary that truly compensates their work? It's because we live in a culture of teacher bashing and blaming us for the failures of students.
I have never heard anyone bash teachers and think that's a little extreme.  As people have said, teachers (and nurses) are generally well-respected, and I'm sure most people wish those professions paid better.

I think many people aren't willing to pay higher taxes in general, not because they don't like teachers.  I am all for higher taxes to better education.

I do think teachers are under appreciated, but since I rarely hear people championing an increase in taxes in order to pay more - so, they're paid what the budget allows.

I also believe people often make poor choices in colleges and degrees. Like, I got through college with minimal debt by choosing a cheaper school and working full time.

Teachers always talked about how little they were paid when I went to school. So, I don't think anyone goes into the profession unaware. I guess I could see people being naive about how far 30-40k a year goes.

Not to beat a dead horse, buuuuut...

Notice the part where you said poor choices in colleges and degrees. And then notice the next paragraph where you use teachers as a example. That kind if looks like singling out. Just sayin'.

  • @BethRN1987‌ it's always the nurse's fault (sarcasm). I feel like in this situation, VNA services would've been appropriate, at least to make sure the patient takes the stinkin meds!! This kind if stuff makes me mad. Do insurance companies think docs/nurses just aren't doing their job? Isn't that why everyone makes such a big deal about documentation!! That makes me so mad for you!
