Storing and Freezing Liquid Gold

edited June 2014 in June 2014 Moms
I have 60 oz of milk in my freezer right now and I am out of storage bottles AGAIN. I don't want to use the little bags because last time I ended up spilling a ton of milk every time I tried to pour it in a bottle. Plus these storage containers are reusable. But, it's $12 for a twelve pack (Medela freezing and storage containers). How are you storing your breast milk?

Re: Storing and Freezing Liquid Gold

  • I only have maaaybe a few ounces at a time extra, so I just store in a bottle in the fridge. Nothing to freeze.

I know in the other BFing threads people suggested ice cube trays. Maybe freeze an ounce at a time, then put in a zip lock bag?

  • I don't know what brand of storage bags you're using, but I love the Lansinoh ones.  They have a double seal so they don't leak whatsoever.  I label, pour in the milk, and place it flat in the freezer; after it's frozen, I can stand it up in a box arranged by date.  I've also never had an issue with spilling the defrosted milk into a bottle.

  • I just bought some Lansinoh bags to try out based on a lot of recommendations. BRU has buy one get 50% off Lansinoh breast feeding accessories. They are cheaper than the Medela ones too. But I also plan on trying out the ice cube trays and storing the cubes in zip-loc bags.

  • I'm with @shiggybop. I'm actually trying to sell all my containers. I'm too lazy to wash them this time around.

  • The bags work great if - instead of opening them all the way and trying to pour the milk into a bottle - you snip a corner open with scissors to create a spout hole. Pours out like a charm!

How do you have 600 oz??

Lol.  I know I only have about 60 and I feel like a damn dairy barn.

I have freaking super boobs. I don't know where it all comes from. I pump once a day for about ten minutes and get between 3-5 oz. the scary thing is that's less than with my first and I have yet to be really engorged this time around. I also started pumping while I was still establishing a supply (I know that's supposed to be a no no but it worked) so my body just believes we have one more feeding per day than we actually do. I also only nurse and pump on one boob per session (last baby too) Not sure if that affects things.

Considering I only have enough to feed my kid half the time, I'm having supply envy.

So if you pump once a day and get 5oz., that means you have been pumping daily for 120 days?  Or is it only 60 oz and the extra "0" was a typo?

ETA: Just reread, so you pump each nursing session as well? You made it sound like you only pumped once a day.

Haha yeah 60! Lol. I am sleep deprived and bad at math... Bad combo

Eta: pump once a day. I meant during that one pump a day I only pump one boob.

  • I spilled a tiny bit with the bags at first but then I grew to love them, especially all the space I saved.

  • Thanks everyone! I have invested in a 60 pack of lansinoh bags that have a pour spout. I used Medela before and they didn't have the pour spout.
