High-Risk Pregnancy

Type 1 and Moderate to Large ketones.

*sigh*

I woke up with my BG in the 260s.  No idea why.  My CGM was going off all night and I kept bolusing to get myself down and obviously my insulin didn't feel like working.  Tested for ketones and they are Moderate to Large.  I haven't had more than trace - small ketones so far in this pregnancy so I'm not sure if I should call my doctor or not or wait it out for a few hours (while drinking lots of water!), retest, and then call if still above moderate.  In the hour since I tested my BG, I've come down to 170, so I'm at least headed in the right direction.

Just wondering what your protocol is when you're spilling ketones.

I would inject a correction with a syringe since your overnight ones didn't do anything. I would also change out the site altogether. Push fluids and insulin to get those rid of those ketones.

Yup, did a shot this morning and changed out my site.  Looks like I'm coming down more - 129.  I'll probably be back on here in an hour whining that I'm in the 40s.

Would you call the doc at this point or only if I still have ketones in a couple of hours?

I haven't had ketones while pregnant, but if it were me, I would probably call if I still had them in a few hours and let them know at my next appointment. Of course, if ketones are on your doctor's list of "call us immediately if this happens," I would call. It seems like you're coming down and doing okay at this point, but if it's stressing you out--just call. I know my doctors are always happier to hear from me and answer an anxious question than to hear at an appointment in two weeks that I worried for a few days about something. I'm not much help, but thought I'd throw in how I would probably handle.

  • Last check, trace ketones!  Woot!  I'm going to try to call this afternoon and let them know.  I have an appointment on Friday so I'll be sure to mention it then too.

    Thanks all!
