STM's: city select purchase

I finally decided on the city select as our double but opted to look for it used, and finally found one and picked it up today. I know there were some discussions here on double stroller options. I'm pretty happy with the select so far, though it will be an adjustment. It's obviously heavier and feels bigger (longer) than the city mini I've been pushing for the last 20 months. I'm happy with how easy it seems to be to put seats on/off and while I'm sad to lose the one hand fold it's still a pretty easy fold. I had a hard time getting a regular double because I know I won't always need to push two kids and I didn't want to be stuck with a big double stroller and only one kid in it. This way I can condense it a bit so that it's set up for one kid or two if I need.

What have other STM+'s decided on?

  • City Select is our plan also. Have been watching Craig's list and yard sale sites.

  • Question- if you were a FTM an planning to have more kids, would you just go for the city select right away? I've been thinking about this a lot because if we register for it, I think it is likely one of our families will buy it for us as a gift thus saving us money later on. However, it is so darn heavy and getting a one-kid stroller that works better for us now seems to be more practical.

  • I think weve decided on the city select too. Plus you can add the glider board to the back if you end up having 3 kids ;)
Question for you tho, how much did you get your used one for? Ive been searching and havent really found any local deals that seem worth it for a used (basically only like $50-$100 cheaper than buying it brand new)
  • That's what the select is-a convertible stroller. I watched lucies list do a video that compared the select, britax and uppa baby and the select really won out. The uppa is agreed single but not a great double. I didn't like the second seat being a rumble seat.

Yeah, if we had been so sure of a second the select should have been our only stroller purchase in the first place. It is def heavier, but I'm used to my light city mini.

  • We got a pretty good deal. It's a 2011, came with double seat, two adapters, two snack trays, parent console and rain canopy. They were asking $500 but accepted my offer of $400. I couldn't stomach $536 for the 2013 model + double seat brand new. Even $400 seems like so much. I hope it's worth it (I think it will be!).

I'm selling my city mini if any local girls are interested :p

  • @carcrashheart‌ Have you been happy with the City Mini? We loved the City Mini GT yesterday when we tried it out at the store.
  • I'm a FTM but we are going with the City Select. We figure were going to try for two so we may as well get the double stroller now. In comparison to others we felt it was definitely heavier but felt sturdier especially when the second seat is attached. We also like the Britax car seat and the Mesa and they both fit in the City Select without one of the bar attachments, which we prefer.
  • Stalking this thread! We tested out the Mini GT and the Select yesterday at a BBB. We plan on having a second one in a couple years and I do not have room for multiple strollers! I might suck it up and get one of the 2013 models with the second seat already from Amazon.

I have absolutely loved my City Select from the second I bought it for DS.  I bought it knowing we would probably have another baby, and will be buying the second seat soon!

ETA:  The place I bought my City Select offered a really good deal if you buy the second seat at the same time as the stroller.  I'm regretting that we didn't do that at the time, as the second seat costs almost half of the entire stroller... dammit!

  • I've loved our mini! It's not super heavy and so easy to open and fold up. I fumbled with opening the select since I'm used to being able to open the mini with one hand and the select isn't quite that easy to flip open, but I'll get used to it. The second seat is $165 on amazon, which I don't find to be excessive in comparison to the cost of the stroller itself. The mini has served us well these past 20 months.

  • I can test that later since I have both the adapter and car seat accessible. Here's a picture I have pinned of the different ways it can be used. It doesn't show reclined but I wonder if in the least you could face the second seat towards you and then recline it. DS has never cared to sleep in the stroller so I don't really think about reclining, though that doesn't mean #2 won't be a stroller sleeper.

  • We are going with the city select as well.  I have been searching one used forever.  Did you snatch that up off craigslist?

yes, craigslist. i had made a habit of searching 'city select' every day or couple of days. it had been listed for 19 hours and i guess nobody else had jumped on it yet. i had tried to contact another woman about her select a few weeks prior, but she never responded. she was selling a 2010 for $550 so i had a feeling she wasn't going to be very responsive.

i watched lucie's list do a video review of convertible strollers. i didn't look in to side by side, since it really wasn't something i wanted. i pushed a few standard doubles in baby depot and was impressed with how well it turned in a circle, but i still wasn't sold on having a stroller permanently set up for two children when there might be times that only one is in it. DS doesn't mind the stroller, but he doesn't love it either. so it's possible i may only need to use it for #2, OR if #2 is awake and able to be worn then i might only need it for DS. i like that i can choose how to set it up. i also like the idea that they can face each other (though i'm sure this will cause fights).

the second seat is obviously lower than the first seat, but because it sits on brackets that are snapped in, it doesn't seem terribly low to me. because the seat is a lot more "bucket" like, the child's feet should be mostly in the stroller and not hanging out above the ground.

one thing i do like is that the select seats sit up straight. one thing that bothers me about the city mini, probably the only thing, is that the seat sits so far back that DS is either scrunched up and scooted back so that he can rest against the back or he has pulled himself all the way to the front of the seat so that he can hold on to the belly bar and see things. the seat just doesn't seem to sit up at a 90* angle, and the seat itself is deep so the child sits pretty far back and they can't see much from back there.
